To convince young Emmett to construct the drill, after you called him from the soup kitchen and went by the court house, talk to him until he only has 2 questions left to ask, causing repetitive responses. Go to the jail and talk to Doc about his younger self. Then use the tape recorder on young Emmett. Play the tape for Doc and he will solve the problem. Go back to young Emmett and give him the solution. Through the dialogue you convince Emmett to build the drill and you're set up for the next quest.

Thanks so much motter, I was going insane trying to figure out how to record him, wandering back and forth between that courthouse and the office for about an hour haha!

How do you use the tape recorder? It never works for me. I press X to equip it, I press x again and it goes back to equip screen. I press x to equip and press a to use, but this only starts a new dialog.

Same issue as SmactSilly. Won't let me use the tape recorder just goes back to the equip screen instead of using it.

It's been a long time since I played the game. Try giving the tape recorder to Doc Brown.

This one is a pain, I was struggling for an hour or so. After talking to Doc (suggesting you'll have to use the recorder), press X and select it (left/right) and then press A. Then you'll see on the top right, that the recorder is selected.

And now, do NOT approach young Emmett from the front or sides, but catch up with him from BEHIND! When you are close, let's say 1m/3ft, press A. That should do the trick.

Thanks for that info motter! Spent 45 mins trying to get it to work before seeing your comment. Worked first try afterwards! Really stupid game design though

I think that I got lucky, but I was standing in the courtyard and had the tape recorder equipped, and as young Doc came out of the law offices and had the red icon above his head I hit A and it finally worked
