How to unlock the No Penny Required achievement in Baldur's Gate 3 - Definitive Guide
This can be gotten during many conversations, starting from after the end of the very first mission. (Details on that in the spoiler below.)
Sometimes during conversations you'll see an option with [DETECT THOUGHTS] at the front. Choosing this option and succeeding on the roll to detect the other person's thoughts will unlock the achievement immediately.
There are several opportunities for this with characters in the first area.
If you would like a specific early conversation this works in, see the spoiler below:

Some things to keep in mind:
- The roll is a Wisdom check, so if your character is bad at Wisdom, you might want to try doing it with one of your companions. (Have them initiate the conversation, it will use their ability modifier then.)
- If you fail, the person you're talking to will know you tried and won't be happy about it. Some people will attack you.
- If you succeed, the other person is none the wiser, and you just find out what they're thinking.
- You can use inspiration on the roll if you want.
- Unless you're playing on Honour difficulty (the hardest), you can save before a conversation and reload if it goes wrong to try again. Or reload if you would prefer to not read that person's mind in your playthrough.
- Guidance works for this roll, so if you're a Cleric (or have gained Guidance some other way) or have Shadowheart with you, that can be a nice 1d4 bonus.
While your character has a Detect Thoughts skill active, either by spell, potion or scroll you will sometimes see a dialogue option that begins with [Detect Thoughts] while in a conversation. Choosing this option forces a D20 roll. Pass the roll and the trophy is earned. Fail the roll and the person and their allies will likely attack your party.
While having the Detect Thoughts spell active during dialogue, and when a prompt labeled [DETECT THOUGHTS] appears, click on it. The achievement will be awarded upon a successful roll.
