How to unlock the Mind Voyager achievement in Bastion - Definitive Guide

There are 4 trips to complete to "Who Knows Where" in total. Each one is accessed from items collected and added to the Bastion, with the gear symbol above them until you interact with them. The Kid will take a nap after interacting with the item and be transported to a dream-like arena sequence of battles involving waves of enemies.

1. Smoking Pipe (Hookah) - Kid's Dream - 15 waves; common enemies like windbags and squirts
2. Cooking Pot - Singer's Dream - 20 waves; tougher enemies with focus on the bog enemies like peckers, gators, and plant-types with some sub-bosses
3. Bedroll - Survivor's Dream - 25 waves; tougher enemies with focus on Ura (watch out for spear guys), turrets and spike creatures with even ore sub-bosses
4. History Books - Stranger's Dream - 30 waves - Stranger's Dream; toughest round by far with diversity of enemies

The pipe is unlocked when you rescue Zulf, the first Ura, and return him to the Bastion. The second one comes when you rescue Zia, the second Ura, and return her to the Bastion. The final item shows up when you progress through New Game Plus. The first three are fairly easy to finish. If you are struggling with either of those, just wait a little while longer through the story to get better upgrades, newer weapons, etc. They are made easier if you have the Bellows and Galeon Mortar maxed out. Check solutions for individual trips if you need further help.

For the final trip, you will need to enter prepared. You will be fighting a lot of waves of enemies of all types and combinations. You can use whatever tonics, skills, and weapons you want, but it is much easier if you have lots of tonics unlocked (level 10 is max) at the distillery, and level 5 upgrades to your weapons.

That's weird, I got this achievement without doing the History Books. I did the Smoking Pipe twice (second time for a vigil challenge), so maybe the achievement just pops when you've done four runs on any trip?

That's good to know. I did this way so I cannot confirm that works. If someone else wants to try, I will be happy to edit the solution with that info.

I got this achievement after completing the first 3. I haven't finished the history books one. I did start it previously though, so maybe it counts if you try them, even if you don't finish?

Can confirm you don't need to do the books. I did the kettle two times and then the bed and pipe and the achievement unlocked.

You don't need to do the history books because they were dlc that were added to the game post-launch on the 360.

**POSSIBLE MINOR SPOILERS**

There are 3 trips to complete in total all accessed from the items collected and added to the Bastion.. The first is activated by using the Pipe. The second by using the stockpot. The third by using the Bedroll.

The first two are easy. If you have difficulty with them then simply wait until you progress with the story and upgrade your weapons until you can beat them.

The final trip can be troublesome but I've found a decent setup which makes it fairly easy...

Your main weapon will be the flamethrower. I recommend having at least 3 upgrades on it. I had 4 which were:
+20% Fuel
+1 Damage Per Flame
+20% Fuel
+25% Attack Speed

For your secondary weapon I recommend the Fang Repeater. We won't actually be using it that much, we just want it's Secret Skill available to us. However it's still a good idea to upgrade it as you see fit.

The secret skill you want to equip is the snooze dart. This is obtained by winning first prize at the fang repeater proving ground which is easy enough once you've upgraded it a few times (Thanks to "neeker75" for confirming how to obtain Snooze Dart).

Now for tonics. The most important one is Leechade which enables you to regenerate health as you damage enemies. I also used Bastion Bourbon (Extra Health Tonics), Black Rye (Extra Black Tonics), Heart Punch (Extra Death), and Squirt Cider (Extra Max Health).

With this setup you are going to be using a lot less health tonics as the flamethrower + leechade will mean you are regening health at a decent rate.

So now for some tips on the enemies you'll encounter:

- The toughest guys are the Ulra Soldiers as they continually teleport around the arena. This is where the snooze dart skill comes in handy. Simply use it and flamethrower them to death. For the guys with the Spear/Sword simply hold block and wait for them to attack you. Once you block the attack they will stun themselves for a second giving you chance to flame them.

- The weird white dragon (rabbit??) things are easy enough. Just use the flamethrower and keep rolling around.

- On a few waves you will encounter giant plants that shoot out the spikey eye enemies. Simply focus on the plants and then take out the remaining eye dudes. Try not to let the giant spikey eyes touch you as they can deal some nasty damage.

- The gaint leaping frog guy is easy enough too. Just roll every time he jumps in the air and focus on attacking his behind.

- For the "security statues" which shoot the lasers, just get rid of them with your flamethrower as quick as possible. As long as you only have 1 or 2 attacking you at a time your health regen should negate the damage they do.

- FINAL TIP FOR THE FINAL WAVE. Try to save up some black tonics for the final wave as it's easy to get overwhelmed and heavily damaged due to the poison crossbow guy. I would focus on him first and then take out the others. With 3 or 4 snooze darts saved up this is easy.

That pretty much covers it. Leave any questions or corrections in the comment section and I'll do my best to get back to you.

There are three arenas that you'll unlock while playing through the game. Two of them are mementos that you'll have to find or buy from the Lost & Found, if you didn't get them in the area. The last one will be unlocked as part of the story. They are all on the south side of the bastion. Just press when next to them and fight you're way through the 20 waves.

- Pipe
- Stockpot
- Bedroll

It's best to wait until the end. I like to use the upgraded shotgun, because it is quick, does a huge amount of damage and can kill a whole bunch of enemies at once. You should also equip a few good potions. Get one extra try and 2+ water bottles. this will make the arenas much easier.

Utilise the roll and counter attack (blocking with when the enemy attacks you). This will instantly kill the towers and some weaker enemies.

The Who Knows Where trips are basically horde arenas, accessed through the items at the bottom of the Bastion. By clicking on the Smoking Pipe, Bed Roll, Cooking Pot, and History Books you will be transported to these arenas. You need to do each of these eventually with all ten idols unlocked in the Shrine for other achievements, so I'd suggest not bothering with them on your first playthrough. See "About the Author" for more information.

Note: The Who Knows Where location visited from the History Books is not required for this achievement (and it is not available until your second playthrough), but it has two achievements of its own and will help toward Score Attack Mode.

There are a total of four different trips the Kid can take to Who Knows Where. These are basically arena like levels where you're pitted against waves of enemies that progressively get more difficult the further you go. These dream sequences can be accessed via the mementos you've picked up through the different levels in the game, all located on the bottom left corner of the Bastion hub.

They are as follows, from least difficult to most difficult:

  • Kid's Dream - Smoking Pipe
  • Singer's Dream - Cooking Pot
  • Survivors Dream - Bed Roll
  • History Books - Stranger's Dream

That said, as with all the other collectibles in the game, do not worry if you missed out in picking up one of the mementos. Anything you missed collecting in the levels will be made available in the Lost-and-Found, but it will cost you fragments.

Since you'll want to complete each trip while having all 10 idols invoked for their respective trophies, to save time it is recommended you wait till you're just before the final stage of the game and on your NG+ where you'll have most if not all your upgrades. Please see the respective trophies for tips on each of the sequences.

To receive the achievement, you need to complete three main trips to Unknown Where. As you progress through the game, you will discover three main items with which you can get to the Unknown Where. By activating one of three items - a Smoking Pipe, a Pot or a Sleeping Bag, you find yourself in a dream world where you need to hold out, destroying 20 waves of enemies. It is best to go through dreams close to the end of the game of the New Game +, when all the slots for drinks are open and the weapon is improved to the limit.
