How to unlock the Shadow Vigilante achievement in Batman: Arkham Origins - Definitive Guide

This set of 15 challenges are as follows

-Perform 5 Counters
-Use the Quickfire batarang 3 times while in combat
-Reach x8 Combo Multiplier
-Perform 3 Special Combo (Y+B) Takedowns
-Complete a fight without leaving focus mode
-Score a combat variation bonus of 3 or more in one fight
-Knockdown at least 3 enemies with explosive gel
-Knock down 2 enemies in one slide
-Perform a counter in the middle of a beatdown
-Get an A grade in a fight with at least a high threat level
-Use the power gadget ability 3 times
-Perform 20 critical strikes in one free flow combo
-Reach x30 multiplier and perform 7 variations in a single fight
-Take out 3 or more enemies with one use of the multi-ground takedown
-Complete a fight with a medium or higher threat level without being hit, with a x50 combo and at least 15 variations

I would recommend starting theses as soon as possible on your first play through. Some of the challenges cannot be completed until you acquire a upgrade, some of which are unlocked through most wanted side missions (critical strikes is unlocked by completing Shiva), if you cannot yet complete a challenge, figure out what you need and try to get it done sooner rather than later because the longer you wait to do some of these the more difficult it may get (enemies have more variation later in the game).

Crimes in progress are an excellent way to find decent sized groups of enemies to fight.

As a side note, some of these challenges I believe to be heavily bugged, for instance I unlocked the final challenge (50 combo and 15 variation) on two enemies when I glide kicked the first one and did standard strikes on the second and reached a x5 combo. A similar thing happened on a similar challenge requiring 7 variations when I used the shock gloves).

Some solutions should be obvious core gameplay (counters, quickfire gadgets), you will have to be a master at this game's combat to get this achievement so I will go over some of the trickier ones briefly.

For the slide I just ran around in circles and made a train, turning around when they were nicely lined up and sliding right into the train.

Freeflow is achieved after an upgrade and reaching a combo of x12. Using a quickfire gadget while in this mode has to be done 3 times for a challenge.

20 Critical strikes it about timing, I would recommend not using shock gloves and just getting a x5 combo then only using strikes and counters on a group of about 6 or 7 enemies, if you time your button presses well you can strike between the group of enemies regardless of range and score critical strikes which increase your combo by 2 with each hit. Critical Strikes are not unlocked until after beating the Shiva Most Wanted Side Mission.

For 3 enemies in one multi-ground takedown, just strike several enemies quickly (having freeflow focus active may help) and once you see 4 (one will most likely be up before you can get him) on the ground, press A+B.

For the variation challenge you will need to use the majority of the move in Batman's arsenal for the 15 variation:
-Strike
-Counter
-Evade
-Cape Stun
-Ultra Stun-
-Ground Pound
-Beatdown
-Aerial Attack
-Y+B Takedown
-A+X Bat Swarm
-A+B Multi-ground Takedown
-X+Y Search and Destroy
-LT+X Explosive Gel
-LT+Y Bat Claw
-LT+B Concussion Detonator
-LT+LT Batarang
-RT+RT Glue Grenade

That is 17 (there are more possibilities), so pick the two you hate the most and leave them out, or start with a glide kick which may count as an additional one. Shock gloves with these moves count as a different variation. Other things like the blade dodge takedown and shockgloves used in conjunction with gadgets also may count as a separate variation.

SPOILER: THIS PARAGRAPH ONLY At nearly the end of the game there is a section in Blackgate prison again, there are some good groups of enemies in there for doing this achievement, but some of them contain enforcers and martial artists, both of which I suck against. You can probably knock out some of the combo challenges on these groups. I would recommend using the shock gloves to focus down the enforcers immediately so that the only things left are basic enemies.

Good Luck

For Rank 12 - "20 Critical Strikes in one free flow combo" does that mean press X and nothing else it says Upgrade required critical srike? I'm confused on this. Also the last rank 15 will be hard. I'm not good at comboing every gadget item >>; and the counter in this game is dumb.

The only way I know of to critical strike is by well timed presses of the x button, completed the Shiva Most Wanted Mission is required before you can use critical strikes

I just need the last challenge and it is really bugging me now! Always seem to get hit with a cheap bullet or sucker punch. Wish it would glitch on me but I never get that kind of luck!

Haha, literally on my third group attempt after that comment I attacked 2 thugs. Slid into the first, ground pound, countered the second and then finished him with a takedown and it popped!

There are more than 17 moves. I went for this in the hotel and finished a fight with a variation of 23. Note: there was an enforcer and a martial artist in this fight, and I did activate shock gloves. Unfortunately, my combo was short of 50. I knew I had lost it, but thought it got to 50 first. Anyway, it's worth looking into whether the shock glove moves count separately or martial artist counters do.

...and then I got it on the very next fight. Sorry, I didn't see my variation that time but I did use the gloves, broke a guy's armor, and also did a blade dodge takedown. This is actually my first experience using the instant explosive gel; I never liked or really tried it in AC.

The unlocks appear to be somewhat broken. I've gotten credit for things I didn't do before, and not received credit for things I have. For example I did all the worst nightmare rank 6 objectives on the deadshot side mission and got no credit. Once I did a rooftop with two goons, in detective vision, and got credit for clearing a room without using detective vision. I'm also somewhat convinced that I got rank 15 of this challenge in the first encounter I commented about and not the one after it where I was awarded.

For rank 10 getting A i think it is very easy. Just practice to counter all attacks and use Multi Ground Takedown. With this way I easily can get even S rank. Rank 13 is also easy if you find a nice group of enemies (Bird's gang fights). For Rank 15 I would also advise Prison Block B where you can find a large enemy group. Try to use every combo which you know and add some of those which you never did before. I ended up of having a variety of 20 there and with multiplier of 97. P.S. use electric gloves for beatdown a huge enforcer - it counts for 2 different attacks.

My rank 15 glitched on a combat takedown from behind one of four enemies that were grouped together talking. The achievement popped immediately after the combat takedown. It didn't even wait for me to finish the encounter. Obviously got nowhere close to 50x or 15 variation.

Best bet for rank 15 is Bird's first gang fight. 20+ enemies with not a gun in sight. No martial Artists and no Armor or Stun Baton to end your combo when batman inevitably targets them with a strike. What's more half of the enemies keep fighting amongst themselves until you thin out the other half.

Also, it seems the game can't count. I did everything on Spartan's list minus Aerial Attack, Disarm and Destroy and Explosive Gel and still ended up with a variation score of 18.

By the looks of things, this achievement seems bugged in a good way. I hope I can get it to glitch on me because I absolutely suck at getting flawless freeflow and getting near-perfect combos, let alone perfect ones.

I just got this in New Game Plus.
Did it in story mode, the steel mill when you go looking for the Joker and when Black Mask is tied up.
I started attempting it once the really big guy comes out from behind the wall that requires a triple stun.
I started by using a smoke pellet, then triple stun the big guy and beat him down and knocked him out for a max combo of 60, then I started doing some variations and then I lost my flow once I got hit.
So I figured OH WELL better luck next time, finished the fight with a 14 variation.
I continued on, went down the elevator and encountered 4 more thugs I came up behind one did a loud take down and it popped.
I thought to myself WTF.
So I figured since the game never saved after finishing the first fight it was still looking for the last variation and it didn't matter that I got hit.

Can confirm you can do rank 15 in seperate fights (must be medium+ threat level) as on one fight i got the 50 combo and the 15 variation but got hit, but in my next fight i just focused on not getting hit and got the achievement! :D

-Complete a fight with a medium or higher threat level without being hit, with a x50 combo and at least 15 variations

This popped for me on NG+ when you initially meet Gordon in the police station and you face two armoured armed cops and a standard armed cop. I did put together a relatively high combo of maybe 30/40, but definitely didn't pull off a grand variety of moves, mainly batarangs, evade, disarm and dismantle, counter, beatdown, triple stun and ground pound.

I dont understand how you do rank 14, take out 3 enemies using multi-ground takedown. How do you use explosive gel three times in a battle without detonating the first one?
0

By EstocoImo on 31 May 2014 16:13
@EstocoImo
Multi ground take down is the A+B move where you jump in the air and throw batarangs at grounded enemies. Knock 3 enemies to the ground and then use an A+B move, you can use the ultra cape stun to make people stay on the ground longer.

0
By TheMarkJohnson on 31 May 2014 17:56
But the range of the multi-ground is not large enough to cover three people. So I need to stun three people in a small area until I build up my combo to 8? And hope they don't wake up in that time. And I don't understand what the explosive gel have to do with this either. It's hard enough to gather three people around it, but when you detonate those people just fly all over the place so the multi ground doesn't cover that area

If you are doing rank 14, it has nothing to do with the explosive gel, the explosive gel is rank 6 or 7

I somehow managed Rank 15 last night in the big GCPD fight in NG+. Didn't actually pop it in the fight, since I got hit, but after blowing the wall and going around the corner to the cops' locker room, and taking down the guy on the phone with his wife/girlfriend with a silent takedown, the rank and achievement popped. I'm guessing the code just checks if there was an encounter completion, a 50 hit combo, 15 variations, and a no-hit encounter within the last N seconds.

So if you can get 2 out of the 3 done, ideally 50 hits/15 variations, then quickly find a one-man encounter to beat without getting hit, it just might pop.

I had to do it legit. I don't know if you can still do it with multiple encounters, but a good way to get it with multiple instances of the perfect amount of bad guys is the 20 Blackgate prisoners that Gordon asks you to go round up.

3 notes I have to make....
#1) It should be noted in your solution that Critical Strikes are unlocked after you beat Shiva, and the first chance you get to meet her is after the bank in main story (listen for the crying baby)

#2) Rank 15 can be done in 3 different fights, the first fight I tried, I got hit and lost my combo, just kept going and still ended up with a fight with 20 variations....which leads me to.....

#3) Shock Gloves DO add different variations!!! Just doing strike, x+y, a+x,stun, then beatdown, combo batarang, then doing then all again with shock gloves activated will give you the variations you need (evade and counter are usually automatically done by most players)

I know I'm extremely late t the game, but n Shadow Vigilante Rank 12, Natural 20, Critical Strikes. I feel like I'm too powerful!!! I watch video of players taking on 6-7 baddies and getting 25-30 crits, I generally find 3-4 small groups, disrupt guns and I have maybe 8-9 enemies and as soon as I get to 3 hits I land crits, and then start with X and A but I'm taking the baddies out in 1 or 2 hits and I'm only ever getting a max of 12-13 crits.

Actually, just found the perfect solution to my problem, there is an investigation named BIRD where two gangs are fighting, not exactly sure of the number of baddies, but I'd guess 20 or more, perfect for a 20 critical strikes!!!

@Missjaded You need the 'Critical Strike' upgrade which unlocks automatically. I can't remember what the unlock requirement is, but you can find it in the Auxiliary Upgrades menu on the far right, top corner.

Once you have that, hitting X immediately after any other move will count as a Critical Strike as long as you do it quickly enough after the previous move. You can only achieve Critical Hits when your combo meter is yellow (after either 8 or 5 consecutive hits, depending on your upgrades).

It doesn't have to be 20 in a row, just 20 in the same combo. To get it quicker you can just jump over someone, hit X, jump again, hit X again and so on. Using other moves inbetween won't affect the challenge, so feel free to use your other moves too. Just get 20 before the combo is broken.

I'm still struggling on the last challenge, I wish we could get them in the challenge maps... much easier than looking around the city for big enough groups to fight with. EDIT: well, it seems to have glitched on me. It unlocked for me after fighting 3 guys and I'm 100% sure I didn't get anywhere near a 50x combo, nor did I even use any of my gadgets. I feel cheated :(

Just got it legit. I'll give some tips.

Goto Diamond District>
Down to Street Level under where the words diamond district are on the map you should see a group of enemies, one is armored the rest are standard. There are no shield enemies or knife enemies in the group. Start with a glide kick before stunning and performing a beat down on the armored fellow (counter all incoming attacks but stay focused on the beat down). After Armored guy is KO, continue the combo with a batswarm. Stun a nearby enemy and beat him down till you can do a combo takedown. Ultra stun an enemy then fight another until he falls. (By now you should have easily hit a x50, if you chained it all together like me I had a x72 at this point).
After that I noticed 3 enemies left, I evaded over a guy and threw a batarang at him and it ko'd him, I stunned one enemy and bat clawed the other. Threw down explosive gel, detonated, hit a guy with a concussion blast, glue grenaded the other guy as he got up, ko'd the concussed guy with a ground takedown. I had 15 variations on the dot and easily made my x50 combo. It took my about 6 attempts with this group to get everything down and settled. If you need to retry it spawns you at the building right next to the group just glide down on your left.

Also, please keep in mind that the variations do not need to be included in your combo. After you hit the x50 you can backup and assess what you have left to do for the achievement, just evade those hits! Good luck!

I just did this after struggling with rank 15 so here's what I did. What's important to note is that you DONT have to get 15variation at the same time as the 50x combo. Get the 50x combo. Stop. Do all individual variations. Don't get hit.
Fly to diamond district. Get yourself on one of the beams UNDER the bridge (right where you fast fly to) so you can see the guy with the gun. Glide kick him and then ultra cape stun the guy. Head to where the guy with the shield comes from. You should now have 8 enemies around you making this a high threat. No enemy has armour so you only have to deal with a shield and blade. Get the 50x combo whilst throwing in some X and Y, A and X, Y and B. The shock gloves help get this combo up quick. As soon as you reach 50 stop and then concentrate on different variations such as weapons and aerial attack.
I hope this helps. Feel free to message me if not.

OK there seems to be confusion on Challenge 15: Complete a fight with a medium or higher threat level without being hit, with a x50 combo and at least 15 variations

While I do believe its bugged, as the way it reads I think it is suppose to be done all in one fight, you do not have to at this moment (may be patched in future update)

As of writing this I have gotten this challenge 3 times on 3 different save files as well as a friend getting it twice more the same way.

For this challenge all you need to do is complete the 3 different objectives at some point once the challenge has been unlocked. They DO NOT HAVE to be in the same fight. As long as you complete a 50 combo, perform at least 15 variations, and complete a fight without being hit over the course of one play-through this should unlock.

This also works for all other multi part challenges. I did the stealth one in 2 different fights. I did 5 different takedowns in a low threat level stealth area, then completed an extreme level open fight and the challenge was completed after the open brawl.

Note: I have had reports from friends that it needs to be done in one sitting and without dying in order for the game to recognize that the challenge has been completed.

Note 2: I did not see it listed but for those that are just starting the game the challenges must be completed in order and the next level of challenge will have no progress added to it until the previous challenge has been completed.

Actually this still works, just unlocked it under a minute ago. Just make sure every fight is at medium threat or higher. I did like six fights. 1st Extreme threat with 50x combo 2nd Very Low threat with no hits, 3rd High threat with 18 variations 4th & 5th were failed attempts to get no hits and the 6th was a Medium threat and with no hits. As soon as the fight endend the achievement popped. Also max combo was like 15 and 5 or so variations in last fight.

Yeah, I just did this, it totally still works. On the last fight where the achievement popped I managed to get no hits and over 50x combo, but only 8 variations. Earlier I had a fight with 16 variations. I had to do it all in one sitting, without turning the game off.

ok i hope this helps but for the 50x combo i went to the diamond district were the spelling of it is on the map. on the road down there is a bunch of guys one of them is armored. altho you can get it fighting others, its just a big area with bad guys, a couple guns didnt bother me if i had to fight the other ones. BUT once your done and you get a 50x multiplier you CAN drop it without the 50 being there. then fight other fights and do 15 variations. hell i did 3 fights and the achievement unlock because on my second fight i got so many in. but on the 3rd i did more that i missed from the second fight and boom, achievement unlocked. have fun. compute

I just did this and it popped for me. it really is the easiest way I've seen. I was ne of the unlucky's and it didn't glitch for me. You have to get the fifty combo first, try and get the shock gauntlets activated quickly, so I went mid beat down on the armored guy and i went for a round of two or just punching the people there, then back to the armored guy, having to stun him again. But beating him down while the gauntlets are activated it does seem the gauntlets give you a different strike, or so the variations go, cause I had 25 when I did this, using only the concussion, batclaw, glue grenade, batarang, bat swarm, ultra stun, aerial attack, ground pound, and beatdown.

As buzzo9neo said, there seems to be something about the Shock Gauntlets and a stunned armored guy.

I just unlocked the 50x combo, 15 variants, no hit outside of the 'Enimga' hideout. My variation was at 9 and I was hit, but it was all after I had gotten the 50x Combo with Shock Gauntlets on a stunned armored guy.

So who knows. Maybe that's the glitch. Either way, kind of following buzzo's addition to Twiztid's got me the achievement.

Thanks. Basically what I learned is that at least outside, this doesn't have to be done in group of enemies. Basically get a 50 multiplier, finish group. Find another group, get as many variations as possible. If you don't get enough, find another group and repeat and without getting the 50 combo with these new groups, you'll still complete the challenge. Luckily, as somehow I did all the other tracks without noticing I hadn't done this last rank of Shadow Vigilante.

I don't know if I even managed the 15 variations to be honest. I did strike, counter, evade, stun, beatdown, aerial attack, bat swarm, explosive gel, bat claw, concussion and glue grenade. Oh and shock gloves.

Just a quick suggestion for level 15. I achieved this during my New Game Plus play through.

This might be a spoiler, as I will describe the room that I was in.

Anyway during the story, and on the bridge when you're disarming Firefly's bombs, right before you get to the 3rd bomb is a room with about 10 or so enemies of different types. I used the Disrupter to neutralize the one enemy with the gun and the 3 of 4 gun boxes in the room. After that, I lead with a smoke pellet into the middle of the room. Everyone starts coughing and hacking except for the one guy with a shield, so I ran into the middle of the room to take him out first. Then, I bounced immediately to one of the armed enforcers, cape stun and beatdown on him. This got my combo up to around 15 or so. At this point, everyone is still coughing and hacking and decently spread out. From there, since my combo was high enough, I could ping pong around the room attacking one enemy and moving on immediately. I started throwing in various moves and combos in order to get my variation bonus up. Note that this room has electrified walls, which need to be avoided. I'm not sure if damage from the walls would cause you to fail this challenge or not. But I didn't want to take the risk and restarted if I took any damage of any kind.

The best part, if you get hit, just restart. You'll go right back to the entrance of the room and can replay the fight as many times as needed. The only problem is, while you can easily tell whether you've been hit or not, you'll have no guarantee of whether your variation is high enough until the fight is completed. But, I've found it is not that hard to get up to a 14+ variation. Just use all the tricks you can think of.

Obviously, this doesn't need to be completed in that room specifically. There are many groupings of enemies throughout the story. So, that is my main suggestion. Do this during the story when you find a room with a good amount of enemies. That way if you get hit, you can restart as many times as you need. If you try to do this in Free Roam, you'll be spending a lot of time searching for areas with enough enemies to get the fight completed with a high enough combo.

Just my two cents.

The Shadow Vigilante track focuses around combat. The challenges must be completed in order and are not retroactive. Below are the Shadow Vigilante challenges:

1. Perform 5 Counters
2. Use the Quickfire Batarang 3 times in combat
3. Reach x8 Combo Multiplier
