As far as I know, it's not possible to lose points before this point so just keep playing until you get enough wins.

I can confirm that after you hit 500 red star you can start loseing stars for a defeat.

Also once you have the ability to lose the red medals, your tally can drop below 500! While within the game hub, it will show what your highest amount reached is/was.

I'm in North Africa with 521 points, now at 510 with loss. No cheevo.

Update...achievement popped after restarting game a little while latter.

To reach this theater of action, you need to score a total of 500 points. Points are indicated by a red star and are given after a ranked match.
