How to unlock the Secret Hat Hunter achievement in BattleBlock Theater - Definitive Guide

Randomly during the story, whether you are in single player or co-op, our ex-best friend Hatty Hattington will appear on the screen holding a Golden Hat. The narrator will make a remark and then the Golden Hat flies off somewhere on the map. All that needs to be done is to bring the Hat to the exit. If you die while carrying the Hat, then it will fall in the area where you died. A word of warning: if you die by spikes or water (not sure about the electrical zappers), then the Hat will be lost, so you got a warning. If in co-op, alternate between who will get the Golden Hat.

Once you cross the exit, then you will be rewarded with 10 gems and the 1st of the ten Hats required for the achievement. Happy Hat Hunting!

EDIT: "You might also want to add that Golden Hats will appear in arena matches as well. You must be holding them as the curtain closes if you wish to receive the gems." - Darkened Night (thanks for the tidbit)

Nothing feels worse than having a precious hat fall into the water and disappear. I would suggest forgetting about everything else in the level and book it to the exit (after getting 3 gems, of course) to secure your Gold, then replay it without the need to tread so carefully.

You might also want to add that Golden Hats will appear in arena matches as well. You must be holding them as the curtain closes if you wish to receive the gems. Dan Paladin, one of the brilliant minds behind the title also confirmed that you can expect to find a hat every thirty minutes or so, but that it is, in fact, completely random. Probability simply states that thirty minutes is a rough estimate, however.

Actually, in case of the time it appears, while I was running through one stage on Insane, a golden hat appeared, while I had grabbed it and died losing that hat for good, another one appeared just two minutes later on that same stage (in another location). The probability of a hat appearing does seem to be randomly generated based on not only time, but your actions within a stage.

^ It's possible that you just got lucky and it is still just time based. Watch out for anecdotal evidence!

another note - was playing coop, i picked up the hat, coop partner hit the exit stage, i didn't make it to the exit (but still held the hat) and it didn't count. You have to make it onto the exit if you are carrying the hat.

I was reading through this and had NO idea what a golden hat was and I was nearly to the 3rd chapter. After that I had 5 hats show up for me over the next 9 levels I played...so for those reading, just keep playing... I've averaged a hat per ~5-6 levels completed.

Sometimes you will be randomly notified that a Golden Hat has appeared in the level, and indicate in what direction from you it has spawned. This can happen in both story and arena games, in story levels it will almost always appear in front of you, unless you are at the end of the level. You will then to collect the hat, then carry it to the end of the level, or hold it until the time ends in arena modes. If you die while carrying the Golden Hat it will most often be left where you were killed, however some obstacles such as water pits will destroy it and it will be lost forever. Dying in insane mode will also make the hat disappear. In co-op or arena games, only the person who is holding the Golden Hat at the end of the match will get credit for capturing it. If you are having difficulty getting the Golden Hats to appear, the hats have a chance to appear at anytime, so idling or spending a long time in a story level will increase it's likely hood of appearing. You can check how many Golden Hats you have by pausing the game (), then scroll over and select Player Stats, and then press  again.
