How to unlock the Modern Technology achievement in Battlefield 1 - Definitive Guide
EDIT: Using class based gadgets also causes you to lose the bottle.
EDIT: The wine bottle has an incredibly generous hit box so don't be afraid to swing for someone if you're slightly farther away than standard melee range. The bottle will kill in one swing so go nuts with it.
After combing the maps in a private server I've got a few screenshots (click on the imgur links beneath them if you want to enlarge them) to help you more accurately pinpoint where the wine bottles spawn. This is by no means a comprehensive list (I've almost certainly missed more than a few), and if you happen to come across any more please let me know so I can update this guide.
(Also, a quick side note. The wine bottles appear to suffer from really bad pop in so they won't actually appear until you get close to where they are).
Caporetto
I've managed to locate 6 bottles on Caporetto so far, so this map might be the most ideal for getting kills.
Near Flag A: Down the hill from where the Liven's Projector is located you'll find a trench with a fire/torch in it. The wine bottle is sitting on the ground in the area near the fire.

Near Flag B: This one is sitting beneath a bench with a gramophone placed next to it.

Flag B: Sitting on a wall in the immediate vicinity of the Liven's Projector.

Flag C: Next to the bridge, slightly embedded in the ground.

Flag D: On a wall near the detonator for the Liven's Projector.

Between Flag D/E: This one is sitting on the back of the train atop the viaduct.

Passchendaele
Passchendaele has probably got more bottles hiding, but due to the colour palette of the map they blend in very well. I've managed to locate 4 so far.
Near A Flag: As you make your way out of the church into the trenches in the direction of Flag C you'll find the wine bottle sitting off to one side.

Flag B: In the open trench area outside the bunker.
https://imgur.com/omAuyBW
Near Flag C: This one is a little bit tricky and hard to see. From Flag C in the direction of Flag A you'll find a small enclosed area. The bottle is sitting on the ground.

Near Flag D: Looking from Flag D towards Flag E and the German Empire spawn you'll see two destroyed bunkers. The one on the left houses the wine bottle on the floor.

River Somme
So far I've managed to locate 5 bottles on River Somme. They are all fairy evenly distributed across the map.
Flag A: In the barn in a corner on the ground floor.
https://imgur.com/MC7bpJy
Flag B: In the windmill on the ground floor.
https://imgur.com/kuskWoZ
Flag C: In the house next to some rags on the floor.
https://imgur.com/ooBedI9
Flag E: In the sugar mill ruins at the base of the machine with the ladder on it.
https://imgur.com/otgeSaa
Near Flag F: Across the train tracks, in the direction of Flag D, in a dug out with a German Empire flag hanging from it.

As I've said before, there are probably more bottles out there that I've missed. If I have, please let me know so I can add them to this list.
Just an edit to say, don't put down any ammo as support as it glitches your character out and the bottle disappears. Don't know about medic or assault if the same happens
River Somme
B Flag: Underneath the stairs in the windmill
C Flag: Inside the house on the floor of one of the rooms.
E Flag: Base of the machine with the tall tower
F Flag: Near a dugout area (looks like the beginning of a mineshaft)
Caporetto
B Flag: Near a bench & phonograph
B Flag: On a ledge near the Livens Projector
C Flag: One end of the bridge.
D Flag: On the ground near the Livens Projector
Passchendaele
A Flag: (Credit: GlitterLicks) Go out of the broken castle where you capture the A flag and head North until you see 2 bunkers in front of you that run parallel. On the left bunker you’ll see a little cut away with a few boxes stacked and in front of those boxes on the base of the cut out is a wine bottle.
B Flag: Walking out of the cement bunker, go right and it will be on the ledge to your right.
C Flag: I've see one in a hut to the North East, but I couldn't get it to spawn again, so it might be random.
Please post a comment if you find any more. Passchendaele was hard to find bottles on because they blend in so well.
Once you find one, it's a one hit kill. However, you can only use it once. If you die with it, it will not spawn back and you can't find it on your body. I highly recommend playing on River Somme with your team starting out with all the objectives. This way you can spawn in at any of the sites and grab the bottle without worrying about enemies.
JafethTheXtreme stated you should not switch to other equipment/weapons when you have the wine bottle as it will disappear.
5 kills later, you unlock the broken bottle. Equip it, get one kill, and achievement unlocked!
Earning one kill with the new melee weapon does not sound overly difficult and it is not at face value. However, unlocking the new melee weapon can be somewhat tricky. In order to access the new weapon, you must first earn five total melee kills with unbroken Wine Bottles. This is cumulative and does not need to be done in one life or one match. There are four tricky parts to this requirement.
Firstly, the unbroken Wine Bottle cannot be equipped in the menus and must be picked up in the environment in any of the three new ground based maps. Secondly, killing an enemy with the Wine Bottle causes it to break and therefore is a onetime use weapon. You must find another bottle in order to earn another kill. Thirdly, switching to another weapon or using a gadget will cause the bottle to disappear and it cannot be re-equipped. Once you pick one up, you must basically go right after a kill before doing much else. Lastly, the spawn locations of the Wine Bottle are inconsistent and somewhat random. Although it appears that the bottle will only spawn in a handful of locations, whether it spawns or not appears to be random.
Please see a below list of known locations:
Caporetto
- Flag A: in a trench near the Livens Projector; it should be on the ground next to a fire
- Flag B: underneath a bench, next to a gramophone
- Flag B: sitting on a ledge, right in front of the Livens Projector
- Flag C: on top of the bridge, next to the shoulder. On the opposite side of the Flag
- Flag D: while facing Flag E, it is on the ledge to the right of the Livens Projector detonator
- Flag E: on the flatbed section of the train on the railroad bridge
Passchendaele
- Flag A: in the trenches, it's sitting in one of the wooden cutouts while facing Flag C
- Flag B: in the trenches in a wooden cutout area (similar to the one above)
- Flag C: while heading towards Flag A, it is in an area next to some sandbags
- Flag D: in a destroyed bunker while heading towards Flag E
River Somme
- Flag A: in the barn, in the corner on the first floor
- Flag B: inside the windmill, on the first floor behind the stairs
- Flag C: in the building on the floor in a corner
- Flag E: next to a large gear at the base of the large machine
Once you have unlocked the Broken Wine Bottle, equip it in the menus and perform one kill with it in order to unlock this achievement. Please note that a single kill with this weapon is also required for the “Weapons of the Apocalypse” achievement.
Thanks to Smashsoul for information on some of the Wine Bottle locations.
The Broken Bottle is a hidden weapon added with this DLC. To get 1 kill with it, you must first unlock it - you do this by accumulating 5 kills with the Wine Bottles that are dotted around each of the new maps.
Once you pick up a Wine Bottle, it will not spawn again in the place that you took it from for the rest of the round. You will also lose the Wine Bottle if you try to switch weapons, so once you pick one up, keep running around with it until you get a kill or die. Once you get a kill with it, it breaks so you’ll need to find another one for the next kill. If someone else recently picked up a Wine Bottle, it won’t spawn there for a few minutes afterwards, so if you can’t find it, it may be that someone only just picked it up themselves.
The locations of the Wine Bottles on Conquest are:
- Passchendaele:
- In the bunker, on a table at B Flag
- In a damaged bunker, on the ground between D Flag and E Flag
- On a table near E Flag
- River Somme:
- In the windmill, under the stairs on the ground at B Flag
- Inside the house, in a corner on the ground at C Flag
- Near a chimney, on a machine at E Flag
- Caporetto:
- Near the record player and bench to the rear of B Flag
- At the base of the statue near B Flag
- At the base of the wall over the bridge at C Flag
- On a wall, near the Livens Projector at D Flag
Once unlocked, simply equip the Broken Bottle to your chosen kit, then play until you get a melee kill, at which point the trophy will pop.
Personally, I found River Somme the easiest map to get the required kills. The windmill location at B Flag lends itself well to camping until an enemy walks in, it’s a similar situation with the house at C Flag, and the E Flag location is quite built up so you can run between structures and surprise enemies quite easily.

Another thing is that they can be taken and of course they will no longer be in that place.
