This is actually simpler than people think, just get 1,200 kills with any one weapon. I should point out that I only see T1 challenges for BF42 weapons, so portal non-BF42 games will not count. A good game mode for this is Breakthrough, super-dense maps will make for some very quick gunfights.
As a few people have mentioned, Solo/CoOp does track progression until you reach Mastery 12 or Tier 3. I recommend doing this until you reach that point so you have a head start going into PvP with a fully customized weapon and with a bit more experience at using it. (note this is the same for all challenges, they stop tracking at T3 in solo)
Hopefully they update it to progress past T3 in solo, but it is a nice surprise that makes getting this achievement that much easier.

i dont think it does since i got over 80 kills in my first match and nothing updated with the dm7. bit garbage but well that pretty much sums up the game.

My method for working on the 1200 kills is to check the featured portal modes. The featured modes will give full credit towards your mastery.
I played Team Deathmatch for the best progress, but it isn't always up. Free for All and the 12v12 Rush mode were good when TDM wasn't live. The main modes are far to spread out and slow going. I got 9-15 kills in most matches. One FFA match I got 29.
It can feel like a slog, especially if you are not into the game. I like it, but agree it has plenty of issues. Keep with it and you will get there!
Note: There looks to be an update in the future that will show how much progress you can get from custom portal matches. It's not known how helpful it will be for this achievement, but could help keep the game interesting.

Boosting on the AA3NQD portal is the most working and proven method, but I twice encountered the following glitch:
at a certain point, the progress of kills on weapons ceases to be counted (it was on the M5 and AK24). The player whose counter stopped running left the server and reconnected with a new one. In both cases, after reconnecting, the kill progress was reduced by 30 units, but after that everything was counted normally.
