How to unlock the Fly Swatter achievement in Battlefield 4 - Definitive Guide

The AA Mine is a deployable item for the Engineer class. You must purchase Naval Strike DLC to unlock it. Since getting the achievement can be a little tricky, I have posted the legit method and the boosting method.

To get the AA Mine you must first complete the "Death From Below" Assignment. You can check your progress in Battlelog by checking your Silver Assignments. You must:

- Reach Rank 10
- Obtain 3 PDW Ribbons (6 kills with a PDW in a round)
- Destroy 5 attack air vehicles with Rocket Launchers

**Please note that you can accomplish these tasks and unlock the achievement itself outside of Naval Strike Maps. You can obtain PDW Ribbons easily on Conquest Large maps such as Operation Locker OR Operation Metro 2014. I destroyed Air Vehicles on a mix of Naval Strike maps and Conquest Large Golmud Railway due to the large amounts of Air Vehicles. Use an IGLA to take down Attack Aircraft** Several people have reported the Stinger does not give you progress towards the assignment, be warned.

Legit method: Once you unlock the AA Mine, equip the Engineer class and deploy them on a high vantage point. You get two of them and they will attack enemy Aircraft within their proximity. It will take 3 hits to take down a vehicle and you only get 2 shots, so find a Support guy or get lucky with an already damaged air vehicle.

Boosting method: Grab 1 friend and have him join the opposite team and hop in a helicopter by himself. Make sure you are an Engineer with the AA Mine and repair torch equipped. Find a quiet part of the map on a Carrier Assault Large or Conquest Large. Have your boosting partner land his helicopter next to you. Equip your repair torch and inflict massive damage. Have your partner take off and then deploy your AA Mines, easily destroying the helicopter and getting the achievement.

So I'm assuming you can only deploy 2 at a time?

@SweptbackFlame - Yes only 2 at a time. They are underpowered so you really have to get lucky and have them fire at a helicopter or jet that is already damaged. A Support player with ammo is your friend.

I was so lucky, just happened to spawn to a helicopter being shot at RIGHT in front of me, I place one mine and it finally killed it! Nice guide, only took my about 5-6 games once I unlocked it!

I just unlocked this on a game of Golmud Railway. So it doesn't have to be a kill with AA-mine on a Naval Strike map either. Chased down a slightly hurt helicopter and got it. Very lucky though. Nice guide.

Can someone confirm if you can unlock the mines using a stinger? I destroyed a chopper today with a stinger and got no progress.

@iiM SO S1N1STER - I personally used the IGLA to get 4 of my kills and got 1 lucky RPG kill. I wonder if you shot down a Scout Helicopter aka Little Bird and that didn't count? Can anybody chime in, I personally didn't have trouble unlocking it. Try using an IGLA if you've unlocked it...

It was a Little Bird I shot down and I did it from another Little Bird. (shot the main lock on then switched seats and destroyed it from the passenger seat.

in the 360 version I got 3 with the SMAW (?) and the rest with the stinger and they all counted on the attack choppers. Just killed a attack chopper with the stinger and it didn't count on the xbox one version

I have edited the solution to reflect that people are reporting that the Stinger does not count towards unlocking the "Death From Below" Assignment. This problem seems to be exclusive to the XboxOne version of BF4. Please chime in with a comment if a stinger does/does not work for you.

Just wanted to point out you only need to get a vehicle destroy and not the kill for progress on the assignment. I got one with the IGLA yesterday and it counted, thankfully, as shooting down choppers seems impossible for me.

Regarding Stinger vs. IGLA debate & vehicle destroyed vs. just a mobility kill...I got credit for a vehicle destroyed with the IGLA, but the pilot had just bailed out a split second before, so it was a "lame duck" destroy. In that case I didn't get any credit toward the assignment. So, I don't know if it was because the pilot bailed, or there was a glitch with the IGLA now...???

My mines just seem to flip the F out and spin in cirlces around the vehicle. Very odd, yet to get a kill with them

Sorry I should have clarified better but that is what I got, it said on my screen "vehicle destroyed"........actually I just read where it says "attack air vehicles", I know I got helicopters but i'm not sure if they were just transport choppers or not and whether or not that actually counts.

Yes must be attack choppers transport ones don't count. A tip when you lock on either wait for them to deploy the counter measures, then shoot when you lock back on. Or fire right away they will deploy the counter measures, lock on and fire again.
Most pilots deploy them as soon as they hear the warning, there isn't enough time between the cool down period so they can't do anything about the second lock on.

I had a mate helping me get the air vehicles yesterday, we found the easiest way to do it was for me to get the Javelin (yes I know it is anti-tank not anti-air) and for him to spot the helicopters for me. If they are spotted then you can lock on with the Javelin and one-shot them......was very easy.

I can confirm that if you pick up someone's kit and they have the AA mine equipped, you can get the achievement without completing the assignment

Yes, I can also confirm that you get only 1 AA mine per life and ammo boxes don't replenish it. Also the mine only fires once but you need 2 shots to destroy a helicopter.

I got the achievement by presumably firing both the AA mine and the IGLA at he same time (not sure which hit first):

I got it today, i placed two on the roof of a portacabin next to an attack helicopter spawn point. The first one stopped it taking off, I think the second killed the crew as they jumped out and before the helicopter burnt out. Hope it helps.

I got this yesterday, and just got lucky with it. Once you've unlocked the AA Mines, just lay them down next to each other then forget about them. 95% of the time you'll just get a mobility kill, but with some patience the kill will come (it's mostly luck based on hitting a damaged chopper). Took me about 10-15 games, just don't stress about it, forget it and work on something else whilst you wait for the kill, it'll come. :)

Hmmm. I guess this has been updated. I am able to equip iglas etc in the first slot, AA mine in the second, but you only get one.
I just fired on a Z-11 chopper with the igla, then the AA mine launched and finished it off, but the weapon credited with the kill of the Z-11's pilot was a Z-11! Very odd.

I appreciate the guide above me, for telling how to unlock it, so I won't rehash the unlocking process, other than the fact that it is in the Engineer Class. However, if you're doing this legit, it is highly out of date.

FIRST THING: You are only given 1 AA Mine Launcher instead of 2.

SECOND THING: Many things are 2 or 3 shots, but what got me the achievement is the ONE thing I've noticed is one hit with the AA Mine EVERYTIME. This thing being the launch pods in Hangar 21, they might be in other maps... I'm not sure, I never seen them anywhere else. These launch pods are basically "escape pods" that can be shot out of cannons. I recommend playing "Conquest Large" on Hangar 21, and capturing Objective B. Once that is captured, run outside to the deck. When you look over the deck, you should see 2 Launch Pod "cannons". Just place the AA mine cannon in between the two cannons above them on the deck, facing outwards towards the rest of the map.

THIRD THING: Wait, then profit, it took me a few games, but eventually I got it while messing around with the snowmobiles, going for the 10 roadkills for one of the Final Stand Assignments.

NOTE: PEOPLE DO LIKE TO DESTROY YOUR AA MINE LAUNCHER!!! Do check up on it every once in a while.
For an example of the tactic:

I achieved that trophy on Battle for spratly map... and the easiest way for me was to plant the mines near the landing pad and after death camp near it to plant next 2 ones after first two hit (60-70% dmg only) the target. 2nd way to do it (its easy on Lost Islands) is to wait til transport chopper is at least ones hit by speedboat (that happens alot) and plant after it throws flares even on shallow waters... remember that you have to kill a player not to shoot down the chopper/jet , so if you lucky and the AA missle hits once enemy aircraft some of the crue will try to jump out and 2nd missle will might hit them...

In order to get a kill with the AA mine, first you need to unlock it. To unlock the AA mine you will need to complete a number of prerequisites.

  • You will need to be Level 10, which is self-explanatory.
  • Own Naval Strike
  • Obtain 3 PDW ribbon. For this you will need to get 6 kills with a PDW in a round, 3 times.
  • Destroy 5 attack air vehicles with Rocket Launchers. The best way to accomplish this if you are skilled is to either use an RPG/SMAW or an FGM-172 SRAW, when an enemy helicopter is hovering, as they will destroy attack helicopters in one rocket. Or you could ask a kind friend to help boost this with you.

Once you have unlocked the AA Mine, it is deployed in the same way as an AT mine. Simply place it on the ground underneath the air space you want to mine. When an enemy helicopter passes into the target zone, a missile will lock and fire, hopefully hitting the helicopter. The missile does 30 damage, and thus will take up to 4 separate hits to destroy a helicopter, depending on its health.
This one can also be boosted with partners by finding 3 like-minded individuals and finding an empty NS server. Simply have a Support supply the Engineer going for the achievement with an ammo box to refill the AA mines, then have an enemy member fly over deployed AA mines. Rinse and repeat for each member of the group.

In order to unlock AA mines, you first have to complete assignment “Death From Below”.

To access the assignment you must be at least rank 10. For the assignment you have to get 3 PDW ribbons and hit down 5 attack air vehicles (jets, attack and scout helicopters - basically all air vehicles except transport helicopters) with rocket launchers. For the PDW ribbon you have to use engineer class specific weapons PDWs and get 5 kills in a round with them. For hitting down the attack air vehicles you can use rocket launchers such as RPGs, SRAWs, Stingers, Iglas, etc. Note that you don’t have to complete these requirements in a single round so it can be done in multiple matches.

After you’ve unlocked the AA mines, comes the tricky part – getting a kill with it. AA mines replace launchers and you can carry and deploy up to 2 of them at the same time. AA mines do about 30% of damage so there’s no way to instantly destroy an aircraft with full health. You have to deploy the AA mines on the ground and once an enemy aircraft is in their range they will shoot automatically.

There are multiple ways you can get a kill with them, for example, play on a big, open map and wait on a building’s roof. Have a friend deploy an ammo-box for you and then just spam the AA mines (thanks to NSS13 for the tip). Alternatively, you can wait for your teammates to try shooting down choppers with stingers/iglas/heat-seekers and then deploy your AA mines after the enemy pilot has used up their flares.

If you want to boost the trophy, have a friend in the opposing team get a either an attack or scout helicopter and meet-up on a remote place on the map. Note that since AA mines do such little damage you first have to damage the chopper with other means. For example, you can have your boosting partner land the chopper, damaged it with your repair tool and leave it with 50% health and then deploy your AA mines to get a kill.

To open an air defense mine, you need to complete the "Death from Below" task:

1. Three stripes for PDW ownership

2. Destroy 5 units. strike aircraft from grenade launchers (Igla and Stinger also count).

Only after this the air defense mine is opened, and only by the engineer.

The mine has a very narrow target acquisition corridor. I advise you to fight next to the turntables. As soon as you notice that the turntable is having problems, place both mines aimed approximately at it. In my case, even one shot was enough.

The damage from one air defense mine is not 30% as written above, but rather about 60%, I got this trophy without boost on the fifth attempt and with 2 air defense mines, you need to place them next to each other and so that the mines are directed in one direction, play in "Conquest" for 64 players and get no problem!!!

One hit from a rocket mine removes about 30% from a vehicle.
Considering that you can deploy no more than 2 pieces. It becomes clear that using only these mines it will not be possible to completely destroy the helicopter and, accordingly, it will not be possible to kill the enemy with them and get a trophy.

Shooting decoys with a helicopter naturally reduces the probability of both missiles hitting, because Usually only one, the first one, reaches the target.

There are four options for achieving the task to obtain this trophy, but all of them require the help of another fighter.

1st option - The fastest - Boost.
Your friend goes to the enemy team. He takes the turntable, flies up to you and lands. You reduce the strength of his spinner to 50% using a burner and immediately set both traps. Trophy in your pocket.
Of all the cards, “Bloody Dawn” seems to me the most preferable. A very large number of skyscrapers (and roofs) where you can land and make a trophy.

2nd option
Your teammate takes the Support class. You both climb to a high point on the map where helicopters are flying. There, a friend throws a box of ammo, and you spam the turntables with mines. Sooner or later, you will be able to fit 4 pieces. and destroy the enemy.
Long and tedious...

3rd option
A comrade takes the needle and deploys near you. Traps are not installed. When an enemy appears in a helicopter, several shots are fired from a needle to shoot traps and reduce the strength of flying equipment. After shooting the traps and shooting a friend (no need to wait for a hit), we set both traps. Provided that the enemy did not move a significant distance and did not jump out, the probability of receiving a trophy is quite high.

4th option
If a friend has upgraded air defense mines.
Find a place where helicopters fly over. Shanghai Tower is very suitable for this. Place both mines (4 in total) at the minimum possible distance.
Quite quickly, but there is no guarantee who will receive the trophy, because... it is not known whose missile will be decisive

To gain access to the air defense mine, you must complete the "Death from Below" task:
- get a stripe 3 times for owning a self-defense weapon (kills with PDW 6 times per round)
- destroy 5 units of attack aircraft (reconnaissance helicopters will not do!) using MANPADS (needle, stinger, etc.)

We equip the engineer with an air defense mine, place it under the place where the helicopter is supposed to fly over (preferably hovering - for example, near a flag while being captured), it is advisable that the helicopter has already had more than half of its life destroyed before using the mine (it works automatically on enemy aircraft).
