Kill 40 enemy planes and reach at least 5 min plane usage

How to unlock the Distinguished Flying Cross achievement in Battlestations: Midway - Definitive Guide

I found it bit hard to do in first campaign mission since it's tough to fly 5 minutes there without being shot down but achieved it without any problem on mission 10 - 'Turning point at Midway' cause you can rush enemy fast & easy and therefore control finale of mission.

When you repell all waves of planes at start build 3 wings of B-17's and send them directly north (so they can suprise attack from there). When you destroy landing AK's (easy to do even with fighters wih cannons only) you'll get tip thet enemy carrier group have been detected. Use 2 wings of B-17's to take down one carrier (the should net it without problem) and use 3rd B17 wing on one of destroyers. When you finish keep destroying destroyer escort by any way you want - B17's, Buffalo's armed with bombs or bombers so only one alone carrier remains, than just keep few wings of fighters close and keep flying them and taking down any new planes taking off from carrier, when you got 40, finish carrier.

This is definitely a great mission and great set to get this achievement knocked out.

However, I was having trouble being able to be the one to finish off the enemy planes. The method that finally worked for me is to do everything the solution says up to the point where you're down to facing just the enemy carrier and the planes it spawns. At that point I launched a single B-17 and had it circle close to the carrier while manning the AA guns (Y button). This way the plane just stayed around the same area and I was able to look around finding targets to shoot at. The carrier will keep one squadron of Zeroes in the air at all times, and if your plane is close enough they will attack. Just keep taking out the Zeroes as they come at you. You'll have to occasionally switch to the map screen to adjust your planes target spot to circle, but this was by far the easiest way to try and keep track of my personal kills since there were no other allied planes around and I was the one manning the guns every Zero killed went to my kill tally and not the AI's.

Also good way, managing enemy fighters with your own is bit tougher but I wasn't sure if bombers accidentaly sink carrier.

You can do 2 things to make sure that doesn't happen. 1. Make sure to have free fire OFF. 2. When spawning the B-17 select "NONE" for the armament, that way it doesn't have any bombs to drop.

Also, you can make sure to select a waypoint near the carrier instead of selecting the carrier itself.

The best mission for this is the first campaign mission on Rookie. While controlling the PT boat, move very slowly or not at all and shoot down incoming planes. You can park yourself right under their approach path and take down torpedo bombers in groups of three as they come down to drop their ordnance. Don’t worry about the minisub, the longer it stays alive the more planes you can shoot down. Eventually the other PT boat will sink the sub and you will control Donald’s plane. Shoot down 2-3 of the flights in front of you, and try to avoid being hit by the flak from the ships below. When you see the message on-screen about incoming Zeros, put your throttle to full, get away from the ships, and start circling as tight as you can. The goal is to keep the Zeros alive long enough that you stay piloting the plane for at least 5 minutes. Another flight of allied fighters will eventually come over and shoot them down for you. If you get to 25% health or less, level out and reduce speed to 50% or so, and your allies will make very quick work of the Zeros. You can get this achievement, Air Medal, AA Marksmanship, and Sea Unit Service Medal all at the same time.

I down voted because all your solutions are exact copies, word for word, from x360a. And you don't have the achievements.
