How to unlock the Navy Cross achievement in Battlestations: Midway - Definitive Guide

I ran across what I believe to be the easiest way to get this (and the Navy Distinguished Service Star Medal). I actually happened upon it while trying to find a campaign mission that would allow me to get the Artillery Marksmanship achievement, unfortunately that didn't happen (despite having well over 200 artillery hits, apparently hits on land structures do not count).

In the campaign missions list go to mission 5, Raid on Balikpapan. Choose Rookie for the difficulty so you don't have to worry about getting downed by the enemy cruiser that shows up. You can use the in-game code to unlock all missions if this mission isn't available to you (hold RB, LB, RT, LT, and then press X while on the mission select screen).

Once the mission starts, disband your "fleet". Send the other destroyer somewhere to the northeast (away from the islands and potential targets). You can set it up to defend itself with free fire, but make sure free move is OFF so that it doesn't try and come steal your kills. A destroyer might show up close to this ship. If it does, don't worry if your ally sinks it as there are still enough ships remaining for you to get the achievement. Also, you might want to disable free fire on the ship you're controlling as it will fire its AA guns at the freighters and sink them.

Move your main ship in towards the islands. You should notice one destroyer patrolling the area. Take it out and then move on to sinking the freighters. I don't know if the PT dock will start spawning multiple PT boats, but you can destroy it just in case. Soon after you start your attack enemy reinforcements will show up. I had a PT boat and a cruiser pop in to my location and a destroyer that went for my idle ship (I had just moved it straight north instead of northeast). Of course, the advantage to this was that I could take the cruiser on solo instead of both warships at the same time.

Once you've taken out the cruiser and eliminated the annoying PT boat. Continue taking out the freighters. Also of note is the fortress that will continually drop artillery on your DD. It's a good idea to take this out early on as well.

I hope this helps, and please feel free to let me know how I could improve the guide if you feel it's not up to par.

Giving a reason for a negative vote would be appreciated. Thanks.

Play the fourth Campaign mission where you're in a plane most of the time. There are exactly 10 ships here that you can take out with your plane.

In the last stage you have a Carrier. Simply launch 4 separate Torpedo Bombers and sink every ship you can see. They need to be separate because if you have a squad, they might get the final killing hit instead of you. Just keep switching from plane to plane as they use the bombs, and send each back to the Carrier. If you crash them too often, you may run out of planes before you're done. Sink the Battleship last because this will end the mission.

IMPORTANT: Once you have only the Battleship left, make sure to control the Carrier and just leave it idle for 5 minutes so that you're "using" it for the required 5 minutes. Then sink the Battleship and you're done!

NOTE: Boats do not count, only ships, so don't assume that you have it if you've sunk some boats but left the ships intact. This means PT Boats and Fishing Boats do not count. PT Boats have numbers in their name, and they are noticeably smaller, faster and weaker than ships.

I have been told this is impossible to earn in Multiplayer and it has been confirmed by multiple commentors. My previous information must have been flawed, so it is best to just not even attempt this in Multiplayer.

Navy Cross is a single player achievement no doubt, but except for that great guide.

I got it in single player, but I was able to get it for someone else in Multiplayer. I know it works.

Interesting, you say you helped get someone this in MP. I have just got Medal of Honor in MP now but did not get this achievement. I destroyed 7 BB and 6 Cruisers and had about 45 minutes in the ship but no ach.

He got the achievement before we tried for Medal of Honor, so I don't know if Medal of Honor would also unlock this achievement. It should since this achievement has the same requirements in it, but all I can tell you is that he earned this achievement in a multiplayer game when I helped him.

Tried this twice (wish I'd read the comments first) and can confirm that you cannot get this or the Flying Cross in multiplayer

Sorry for misleading some people. I was almost certain that my boosting partner had earned this in Multiplayer but I seem to have been mistaken. I have edited the guide to warn people against attempting this in Multiplayer. Thanks for the corrections.

[Single Player] This achievement is best accomplished on the first Ship Challenge mission where you control the Japanese battleship. Set your damage parties to water, fire and weapons, set a waypoint to your rendezvous, and then take control of the artillery, press for your binoculars, and take out ships as they appear. Don’t concern yourself with evading torpedoes as you won’t get hit enough to sink your ship. Another Japanese ship will eventually show up that you have to keep alive to win, but you can’t control it. Make sure you get 10 kills because if the other ship fires the last shot that sinks an enemy, you don’t get the credit.

I down voted because all your solutions are exact copies, word for word, from x360a. And you don't have the achievements.
