How to unlock the Veteran Captain achievement in Battlestations: Midway - Definitive Guide
The final ship challenge is to destroy 2 Allied carriers. I got it first try with this simple strategy:
- You control the Japanese battleship Yamato. Stay at full speed the entire time, as you have to catch the fleeing enemy. You can veer left or right some to dodge torpedos or expose more of your guns to the enemy, but generally stay on course to intercept the enemy carriers.
- Task your escort ships with attacking a few of the first wave of enemy ships, and then have them focus on the 2 submarines after that.
- Anytime you see a wave of aircraft coming in for an attack run, especially torpedo planes, focus your AA fire on them. Most of the damage I took was from torpedos dropped by planes.
- Once the carriers are in range, focus on them. They're the actual objective, and you'll decrease the amount of planes too.
- Cleanup the enemy escort ships when nothing else is more pressing.
- I generally kept my crew focused on weapons and water.
I didn't lose any ships when I attempted this, but if you have trouble keeping the Yamato alive then try tasking 1 or 2 of your escort ships to run ahead of the Yamato and soak up some fire.

Mission 1 – Strike on the Monster:
See the "Navy Cross" achievement for a walkthrough of this mission.
Mission 2 – Battle of the Java Sea:
Make sure to set damage control parties on each ship to water, fire and weapons. Throughout the battle you will need to continually monitor each ship to make sure their engine and rudder are not damaged. Fight a retreating battle to separate the fast but weaker destroyers from the slow but stronger cruisers. This will let you focus on one type of enemy at a time. When fighting cruisers, turn the auto fire torpedo option on for the destroyer closest to the enemy. If that destroyer runs out, change your formation to use a different one.
Mission 3 – Hunt for the Cruiser:
Put your ships in a single file and charge at full speed toward the seaplane to find the cruiser. Make sure auto fire is on, and you can turn on the torpedoes if you feel like it as well although it isn’t really necessary. Don’t stop to destroy anything or you will likely get taken apart. When you find the cruiser, change to a box formation and try to encircle it for the quickest victory, although you will want to turn torpedoes off at this point if you had them on earlier.
Mission 4 – Might of Yamato:
Separate the destroyers and put them on auto, then make sure the cruiser is in formation in front of the Yamato. Take out the incoming ships and then set the destroyers on the subs as they appear. Set targets and let the AI control the artillery, while you defend the battleship with AA guns. Aim for lower planes first since they are less likely to have dropped ordnance, and obviously hitting them before a torpedo goes in the water is best. Keep an eye out for opportunities to evade torpedoes, but other than that charge for the carriers. As you get closer, remember that broadside you have many more guns than head on, so aim for a point ahead of the carriers when steering. The biggest threat in this mission is airplanes, so speed is essential.
