How to unlock the Dark Night achievement in BELOW - Definitive Guide

In order to obtain this achievement, you are required to collect all 20 light fragments within the game and deliver them to the center room on level 16. After doing so, this will activate the end cut-scene and your achievement will pop. Below is an image along with fragment locations in which you can use for reference and will help establish which fragments you may or may not be missing. Please note that some fragments are randomly placed, therfore I am unable to give exact locations of rooms they can be obtained in.
External image
(There are 2 fragments that are obtained within Dark Tech zones. These are indicated with the floor number, followed by a 'T' on the image above).

Light Fragment #1: Floor 2 – On the northern shores, on the upper-right side, along the rock wall.
Light Fragment #2: Floor 2/3 – Right when you enter the Hideout / Pocket. Can’t be missed.
Light Fragment #3: Floor 3 – Unlock the vendor’s cave for 200 light crystals. The fragment is found inside.
Light Fragment #4: Floor 3 – Found in the shortcut cavern that leads to Floor 4.
Light Fragment #5: Floor 3 – Found in a random sub-room.
Light Fragment #6: Floor 4T – Find the entrance to the Dark Tech zone, located within the center of Floor 4. It leads to a light fragment.
Light Fragment #7: Floor 4 – Found in a random sub-room.
Light Fragment #8: Floor 6 – In the lower city area, on a platform.
Light Fragment #9: Floor 7 – Blast through a rock barrier with a bomb.
Light Fragment #10: Floor 8 – In the lowest area of the city, near where the enemies are praying.
Light Fragment #11: Floor 9 – Found in a random sub-room.
Light Fragment #12: Floor 15 – Found in the ice-y area in the center of the map. Can’t be missed.
Light Fragment #13: Floor 15 – Blast through a rock barrier with a bomb.
Light Fragment #14, #15, #16: Floor 16 – 3 Fragments can be found in random sub-rooms.
Light Fragment #17: Floor 17 – Blast through a rock barrier with a bomb.
Light Fragment #18: Floor 18 – Found in a random sub-room.
Light Fragment #19: Floor 20T – Found in the Dark Tech area. Similar to the Floor 4 shortcut. Found in the center.
Light Fragment #20: Floor 20 – At the bottom part of the floor, swim down until there is a flash of light. When you reappear on the surface near the boat, look for a crater with the final Light Fragment piece.

TIP: It is worth noting that for fragments #6 and #19, you will have to go through a series of levels and defeat a boss for each in order to obtain the corresponding fragment.

Shouldn't this be marked as a Story achievement?

Really? I thought to get the ending you have to have all the fragments? I haven't beat it yet (level 9). So what happens if you get to the end and you don't have all 20 fragments. Feel free to answer inside Spoiler quotes.

Just finished it, and yes you have to get all these fragments to see the ending. You can't get the Hello, Darkness achievement, which is the ending, without collecting all of these and heading to the center of the 16th floor.

Just submitted some new flag info for this.

I'm still confused by the lighthouse type building. It also seemed to require you to have all the light fragments, but then it didn't seem to do anything noticeable when I did.

It's the building in the upper left of the top of the island, has the shortcut to floor 6 I think.

There were also a few places I couldn't figure out how to go, one was the cave right next to the first campfire on the beach, it has a broken looking bridge that looks like you might be able to shoot with the bow, but I couldn't seem to shoot the rope holding it up. I guessing it just lead to some optional items, as I completed the game without even going in there.

I wonder what happens if you have all 20 light bits, and you got to Floor 16, WITHOUT going to the lighthouse first??

I believe I read on the Steam forum for the game that it just shows the floor 16 room light up for a bit. but then darken. Something like that.

I watched a speedrun vid and in it, after all 20 were picked up, there was "vision" of sorts, showing the character the tower. Implying they should go there. But after my 20,I didn't get that vision. Honestly I don't know how anyone would know to do that!

I don't recall getting a vision of the tower either.

So I submitted another flag after some thinking, this is definitely closer to a collectible flag, than a main storyline, so it was better the way it was before.

It's the only game I can currently think of, that requires you to go out of your way, to get the main storyline ending. There's no collectible/main storyline combo flag, so collectible makes the most sense, as you won't unlock Dark Night automatically just playing the game.

It cant be both? Its really both. Its Collectible as you need to collect all 20, but you literally cannot proceed with the storyline without all 20. It's also a storyline achv.

I have no idea if it can be both, not sure I've ever seen that before. I just know with the main storyline flag it's meant to be gained automatically without having to worry or think about it, which isn't something that Dark Night is.

I think of a storyline achv as a string of multiple achievements to get to the end of the story. This falls under that category. You can't get them out of order, and you can't skip/miss any to proceed.

I'm just going by what the TA flag says.

"Main Storyline achievements are guaranteed to unlock in the course of the primary playthrough of the main game modes or storylines, and therefore do not need to be specifically sought out."

This isn't guaranteed, and it does need to be sought out.

Hmm, reading the Steam forum of the game seems you actually have to go to the lighthouse/tower first after collecting the light fragments, before going back to the center of floor 16. Did you remember having to do that?

If so this guide might be missing a step.

@TuKraZe, thanks for the checklist. Short but sweet! +1

I didn't know where to go after beating the last boss, so I looked up a speedrun. They went to the lighthouse before descending to F16 for the finish. I bet that's a necessary step.

This will be your penultimate achievement. The sarcophagus is on the level with the tentacles. Since in the version for X1 the floor numbering is mixed up, it is easier to remember that this is the 3rd or 4th floor from the floor on which you will first see so many tentacles. To open the door to the sarcophagus you need a lantern, and to open the sarcophagus itself you need to collect all 16 particles of light, collect 4 large particles of light and improve the lantern on the roof of the lighthouse. All this can only be done at the very end of the game, after the desert.
