There are 88 pearls in total. You only need 80 of them. As long as you don't go to the moon (towards the end of the game), you can always (re)visit the entire map and look for missing pearls. To make things even easier, you can buy a radar showing you the exact location of all pearls in Ming-Tzu's shop in the city.

I hope this will help some of you. This achievement is known to be glitched, and unfortunately, I experienced it. I collected all 88 pearls without making it pop up. I've tried to redo the volcano part, where you get the last 15 pearls, a couple of times, and it didn't work.
By chance, I had a backup save just after exiting the Slaughterhouse. I reloaded it, and tried to do things in a different order. Instead of going to the Alpha Sections HQ first, I decided to repair the Beluga. When I made it fly for the first time, I killed the Domz serpent and took his pearl (n°73), and then immediately flew to the volcano. There, I begun to kill the crochax, and suprise! The achivement popped up after I killed just some of them and took their pearls (actually, before going to the last area). The weirdest thing was that I didn't even have 80 pearls at this stage (I was missing at least the 5 pearls from the last area, and 10 from the Alpha Sections HQ, maybe some others, as I'm not sure if I've already beaten Francis for the second time on this save).
So, I suggest you make a backup save after completing the Slaghterhouse, and in the case you don't get the achievement, try to do things in a different order.

Previous guys typed pretty much everything there was to say, so I'm just gonna say how to AVOID THE GLITCH.
After exiting the slaughterhouse:
-Go to IRIS meeting
-Type the codes in the consoles in the lighthouse
-Go to Mammagos and buy the Flight Stabilizator
-Fly with your repaired ship to the Volcano Treasure and get the pearls (15 in there)
-Get all the remaining pearls you need in case you don't have achievement yet (i.e. looters cave, at stores, Alpha Section warehouses etc.)
And that's it. The most important thing is not to buy the Flight Stablizator before obtaining the ship.
After exiting the slaughterhouse:
-Go to IRIS meeting
-Type the codes in the consoles in the lighthouse
-Go to Mammagos and buy the Flight Stabilizator
-Fly with your repaired ship to the Volcano Treasure and get the pearls (15 in there)

Pearls are the form of illegal currency used at Mammago Garage. You will need to collect these at certain points of the game but you will never reach 80 Pearls naturally, unfortunately. These, I found, are quite enjoyable to collect, and sometimes come in massive batches together, so 80 isn’t so daunting in the end. Locations for Pearls can be found here.
