Early on in the game, Big Bo will point out the first shopping terminal you'll encounter while playing. Buy any of the weapon upgrades, you'll have more than enough credits at this point to buy 2 or 3 if you choose to do so. The cheapest upgrade is only 1000 credit points.

This should be one of your first achievements. When you first access a vending machine, you will have quite a bit of credits, enough so to buy all the nanomachines and upgrade your weapon. Just go into the ‘upgrade’ option and increase whatever attribute to your weapon you desire.
