How to unlock the Savior achievement in BioShock 2 - Definitive Guide

At various points in the game you will be given the option to kill certain non-essential characters, namely Grace, Stanley and Gil.
Simply DO NOT kill them, and that, along with SAVING ALL the Little Sisters will get you this achievement. The achievement will unlock upon reaching Lamb's secret hideout beyond the fuel/oxygen pump.

SPOILER WARNING

Upon reaching Gil, it may seem like the most humane thing to do would be to kill him. It did to me anyway. DO NOT, even though if you ask me the achievement should be kill Gil, spare the rest.

What is this achievement called though?

The achievement is called "Savior".
And I don't think Gil was showing any remorse, he was simpy afraid of death when faced with it. That he had, previously, in his mentally sound state, begged me to kill what he knew he would become, made me think that killing him was the most merciful decision. I don't think there was any Gil left in that creature. He was already dead.
Grace seemed simply misguided to me, her mind addled by Lamb's manipulation and her own maternal desires, and Stanley was just crooked. I certainly felt the game implied killing Stanley would be justified. Grace, not so much.
I try to never presume that anyone should deserve death, but if they were begging for it, then they probably deserve mercy. I guess it can be the same thing.
Also, I think it's important not to dismiss these issues because "it's just a game", as games can provide us with as much beauty and emotion and artistry as any book or movie or theatre.
Thanks for the great comment Snip CTP. Made me think.

I figured killing Gil was the right thing to do, as I felt the same way as WhizEd did, that he was afraid of death when faced with it.

With Grace, it wasn't really a question to me whether or not to kill her. I knew walking into that room that I wasn't going to kill her. Stanley was a tougher decision, but I ended up sparing him too.

By saving the little sisters, does it mean freeing them or can I still adopt them?

just adopt them and let them farm their adam, as soon as you bring them to a vent you can either choose "harvest" or "save" .
just safe them at that point and y ou can get enough Adam still

I beat the game, killed Stanley, didn't get the achievement. However, I have a save point right before meeting Stanley. If I load that save and play through(without killing Stanley), should I be able to get the achievement? Hence, can I beat the game again from that save point or should I start a new game?

Mammoth, I think it's only if you have saved the little sisters too.

you have to Save ALL the little sisters? as well as Grace, Stanley and Gil? To be precise, you can't miss a little sister? or 'skip' a little sister? (I'm not talking about harvest)

No, skipping and harvesting are not allowed. SAVE EVERY LITTLE SISTER.

You can save them straight away, or you can do the gathers with them, anything. As long as you save them ALL.

I think that, when faced with death, Gil regained some bit of his sanity. He begged for his life and promised to go away, showing a sense of preservation and remorse for what he'd done. As such, is it your place to end his life, as miserable as it may be? At this point, you will have spared Grace and Stanley, both of whom made conscious decisions that have had horrible consequences. Gil, however, did what he thought was right and has suffered because of it, and has even gone so far as to help you end his reign of terror. I think this is indicative of the game's failure to impart a feeling of justified wrath when faced with the decisions of Grace and Stanley's fate. However, you clearly felt sympathy for Gil when faced with what he had become, so in this way the game succeeds.

So, who is deserving of death and who should receive mercy?

Whatever. It's just a game.

It's after you collect his genetic key from his mutated form in the big red tank. You have the option to flood the tank with toxins or something. Just walk away instead and you will get the Savior achievement (assuming you've fulfilled all the other conditions) upon starting the next level.

1. Make sure that you find and save every little sister in the campaign. You get the option to save when you have a little sister and you are at a vent. Now, you meet Grace at Paupers Drop. She is the first one you meet. You'll meet her pretty much at the end when you infiltrate her hideout full of splicers. When you find her in her secret place, she'll open her door and you have the option to kill her. Don't hurt her and just get the item and leave the room. The door will close and she will start saying stuff to you through the radio, audio, whatever it is. The second person you meet is Stanley. You meet him at Dionysus Park. You meet him early in a locked train room. You have to do some stuff before the door unlocks. Then when your going back to the train at the end, Lamb will open the door so you can decide his fate. Just go in the room and pick up items if needed but don't hurt him and just go in the train and leave. Finally, you meet Gil at Fontaines Futuristics. This guy is crazy and annoying. At the end you get to a dark lab with a huge tank. Gil wants you to find plasmid plants before you can decide Gil's fate. After collecting, you put the adam in the tube. After, Gil will tell you to kill what's inside, and there will be a switch that flashes(not gold). Don't press it, just leave the lab and go to Lamb's hideout. After reaching the hideout, the achievement unlocks.

*** SPOILERS ***

At certain points in the game you have the option to kill or spare Stanley Poole, Gil Alexander and Grace Holloway. To save Stanley and Grace, simply walk out of Grace's room and the door will shut close and to avoid killing Stanley, simply board the train. For Gil, after you take the genetic key there is an option to send an electric jolt in the ater tank that holds Gil. DO NOT PRESS IT! Just walk out of the place and board the elevator. As you are going up the elevator, the achievement should unlock. Also you have to save every little sister so it's not enough just to save Gil, Stanley and Grace.

Video not mine.

Once you save all the Little Sisters and spare the lives of Grace, Stanley and Gil the achievement will unlock. If you have decided to harvest any Little Sisters or to kill any of the characters you will need to start over.

Grace Holloway - Stanley Poole - Gil Alexander
You will run into these characters as you make your way through the game. They will hinder you as you try to progress through the levels. Once you have completed whatever tasks you need to, you have the decision to kill them. Make sure you don't kill them either through requests or your own decision.

*Highly Missable*

To unlock this achievement you will need to rescue every Little Sister in the game, as well as letting the 3 characters that you meet, Grace, Stanley and Gil live when given the choice. You must simply not shoot them when you're given access to where they are, except for Gil who you will be told to kill via pressing a button on a console, so be sure not to kill him by accident.

Do not leave a level until you have rescued every Little Sister (as well as done 2 gathers with each) or you cannot go back and you will miss this achievement. Grace can be found at the end of the Pauper's Drop mission, Stanley is at the end of Dionysus Park and Gil is found at the end of Fontaine Futuristics.
