How to unlock the Auld Lang Syne achievement in BioShock Infinite - Definitive Guide

This is not a complete solution, but I think that I can offer a useful tip for those who, like me, are having trouble with the core defense at the end of the game. BEWARE, THERE COULD BE SOME SPOILERS:

- If you can afford it, buy "return to sender for less" in the vending machine before the fight. If not, don't worry. It's not essential, but it's helpful.

- When the fight starts, stick a bunch of Return To Sender traps (holding LT) on the front of the core like this crappy quality picture shows:

External image

- This will make the core almost invulnerable, therefore making the fight A LOT easier. This way, you can allow the enemies to focus their fire on the core, and you can destroy them from behind easily, or even use Songbird on them. Rockets do damage the core a little, so focus on RPG infantry and cannonner ships first.

- Keep an eye on the core, and if the traps start to dissapear, throw some more. Also, if an enemy gets near the core the traps will explode, so be careful with that too.

Hope this is of some help, and sorry if there's any grammar mistake, english is not my mother language. Also, if someone has a way to improve this solution, just comment ;)

You can also go up to the highest point and use undertow to grab the patriots up there and they will essentially be out of the fight.

I can also add to all of the above that it works (Played it on PC though, and not on Xbox yet) . Also might add that when in need of Silver Eagles, you can possess the machines. They spit out SEs :)

@EPiC HaM WaLLeT the upgrade isn't fundamental. You can do the trick with basic Return To Sender, the upgrade only reduces salt use.

i can't even tell you how many times I tried this fight before attempting the Return to Sender trick. I had to remember to cover both sides. By then I only had a hundred Silver Eagles, so I only had one get out of screw-up-free before being dumped back to the main screen, but this was a HUGE help.

Great solution. It worked so well that I wasn't even aware I had destroyed the last airship and the stage had ended. I was still collecting ammo and waiting for the next wave!

In fact I'm ashamed to say that the most difficult fight for me was the introduction to the skyhook where I had to escape the Columbia policemen. At this early stage i had no gears and no shields and I was getting annihilated. Once I had shields things became a lot easier.

My one tip would be to upgrade your shields first because even if it gets broken, it regenerates. Next upgrade your salt and leave your health to last.

Excellent game overall. I cannot wait to see what they'll do with the game when the new download content becomes available.

Winter Shield (shirt) - Jumping from Sky-Line grants brief invulnerability. Combine this with Freebird - Jumping from Sky-Line has 100% chance to burn nearby enemies 400 damage over 3 seconds. Then layer on the generator protection method detailed in this game. Makes the final stages a total joke.

So just to clarify, this achievement ISN'T stackable with the other difficulties?
0
0
By Punzley on 10 Aug 2014 12:18
It is stackable, 1999 mode is considered the highest difficulty and completing the game will grant you all the other achievements.

Anyways, this mode is locked from the start, unless you complete the game once or use the Konami Code (Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B , A) while on the game's main menu.

This is the best and easiest way to complete this level. I had fully upgraded charge, return to sender and around $1200. I died many times but using this method no harm was done to the generator. Fully upgraded charge and Burning halo gear did help throughout the 1999 mode.

I did this fight 2 different times. 1 I used the return to sender traps on the generator and the other I used the undertow the patriots to the upper level. The return to sender trap method obviously is much MUCH better. the generator didn't even take 1/4 of the total damage. Having a shot gun with level 2 damage and grabbing an RPG that I never did upgrade was all I needed. Using the traps, the cover that Elizabeth can bring in, and placing crow traps before each wave makes this fight an incredible breeze. After the 3rd Zepplin is destroyed just clear the deack and you are done. The chievo pops just before the credits roll.

An awesome tip, it helped me finish '99 mode this morning. I had something weird happen though, at the bow there are 2 low rooms, I went to the door and took out the last 2 enemies in each room and I was done. I don't know why they were stuck in there but it gave me a minute to grab some ammo & health before finishing out the level. I think I placed my traps in the wrong place as stated but it worked. I only died once during this last fight, Cheers.

This is not a full solution, the ones already posted here are great, but more of a guide for the Handymen and Lady Comstock bosses. The gear pick-ups are random, so you may not have what is listed, but I would suggest using what works for you best as these are just my personal preference.

>>Possible Spoilers<<

HANDYMAN

Gear Loadout:
Hat – Sheltered Life (brief invulnerability when picking up health) or Hill Runner’s Hat (shield break increases movement speed).
Jacket – Shock Jacket (when struck 50% chance to shock for 2 seconds).
Boots – Handyman Nemesis (increased Handyman damage by 50%).
Pants – Head Master (increased critical hit damage by 50%)

Vigor:
Murder of Crows

Weapon:
Shotgun

Strategy:
Use the Murder of Crows vigor on the Handyman, which will cause him to pause for a couple of seconds and swat at them. While he is distracted, shoot him in the heart twice, then recast Murder of Crows and shoot twice again; evade and reload. Repeat this process, evading when necessary, until he is dead. If he gets close enough to melee attack you the Shock Jacket combined with Hill Runner’s Hat should allow you enough time to evade until your shield recharges.

LADY COMSTOCK

Gear Loadout:
Hat – Sheltered Life (brief invulnerability when picking up health) or Hill Runner’s Hat (shield break increases movement speed).
Jacket – Shock Jacket (when struck 50% chance to shock for 2 seconds).
Boots – Tunnel Vision (aiming increases damage by 20%, hip firing decreases damage by 20%).
Pants – Angry Stompers (when extremely low on health deal 2x damage).

Vigor:
Shock Jockey

Weapons:
Shotgun and Sniper Rifle

Strategy:
When the battle begins, do not worry about Lady Comstock, instead focus on the resurrected dead. Cast Shock Jockey on them, and then shoot them with the sniper rifle. If you kill them while they are being electrocuted, Lady Comstock cannot resurrect them again. If Lady Comstock gets close to you just shoot her a few times with the shotgun, and she should retreat. Once all the resurrected dead are finished Lady Comstock will follow you around using an area of effect attack. Avoid this attack and shoot her when possible. Repeat the process until she is dead.

There are three different encounters with each enemy in the game. If you use this strategy to fight them your task will be much easier. After several deaths, I employed these strategies and was able to defeat each boss without dying. Good Luck!

I believe getting the lackeys heads off is what causes them to not get resurrected. I believe that the shock jockey pops there heads if they die while being hit with it, but when i was going through, a head-shot with the sniper rifle also took their heads off and she didn't bring those ones back too.

I would like to aid another huge "Thumbs Up" for the shock jockey /snipe tactic for Lady Comstock's minions for the last fight with her. I just stayed on the elevated platform above the sniper spawn and used this method. Another thing I did that helped me was have Elizabeth unlock the mosquito that just flies over head, it did just as much damage to Lady C as what I done. I just finished '99 mode this morning. Cheers

Follow-up on what Goggs25 mentioned about the bank vault fight with Lady Comstock - if you reload checkpoint then you are able to jump back through the door you used to come into the room. The lift door wasn't open for me but it does allow you to collect weapons\items\ammo before triggering the fight.

For the bank, i found that I could shoot her through the vault door without going through it, and then while her ghost soldiers can come through the door, she cannot and will sit outside the door trying to get to you, letting you slowly wittle down her health without much danger to yourself

I found out that you can skip one of the fights with lady comstock inside the bank vault I run out of vault throught the big circle door she spawned in and killed me I pressed start and reloaded checkpoint before elizabeth revived me that way i keep my $100 on my second attempt I jump back up throught the hole and back tracked all the way back to the big hall when I got there she was not there so I keept to the lesft side of room went through offices under the left stairs and come out the otherside and I could jump on lift without having to fight her at all

To unlock 1999 mode type in the infamous Konami Code at the beginning of the game (Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left Right, B, A).

Pressing A will unlock 1999 mode and you will begin.

Some quick tips:
- 1999 mode can be unlocked from the start
- When you die, it costs ~75-100 silver eagles as your 'respawn toll'
- Bosses respawn with full health bar
- If you die and don't have enough silver eagles to cover the respawn toll, you are booted to the main menu and will continue at the beginning of the section you were currently on.
- Aim assist disabled
- Tougher enemies with improved accuracy and more health.
- Harder resource management.
- Unable to change difficulty.
- Unable to access the map (up arrow).
- Difficulty achievements stack. This is considered the hardest difficulty.

My method for beating the final part of BioShock Infinite on 1999 mode.

Vigors Used
Possession and Murder of Crows

Possession was upgraded with Possession Aid, which upgrades normal possession of robots into a possession of humans and robots. Possession of humans makes them assist you until it wears off; where they promptly start to kill themselves with whatever they are holding. Like bludgeoning themselves to death with a bat.

Murder of Crows was not upgraded, I used it for setting traps to stun/weaken the enemies in large packs.

Gear Used
Hat - Sheltered Life: Grants brief invulnerability when gaining health from snacks and health kits.
Shirt - Pyromaniac: When struck, 50% chance to burn nearby enemies. Victims take 400 damage over three seconds.
Pants - Urgent Care: Decrease shield recharge delay by 1 second. Increase shield recharge rate by 2x.
Boots - Overkill: Killing with excessive damage stuns nearby enemies.

I have included a video to give a visual aid for those who are looking for how to complete the final stage in 1999 mode.

This is Not a Complete solution but just some Important Tips that can save you much Time and Money in your 1999 run. "Some Spoiler references"

1. Not All fights are necessary - you can De-spawn enemies by leaving the area where possible.
You Can even skip some fights altogether, Especially the Handymen.
As I recall there are 4 Handymen you encounter.
1st guy is in the Factory area - you can use the glitch and also get the Heartbreaker cheevo at the same time.
2nd one is before you board the First Lady for the Second time No Work-around as yet. cry
3rd Handyman is in the Bank Area. To avoid this fight completely, take the skyline to the second level building, where the RPG ammo tear is.
Jump up on the base of the pillar overlooking the open area and then jump down and forward in the direction of the locked gate. You should land inside the gate and be able to move forward thus skipping that battle entirely. ( Do it, ...Do it naow !!! )
4th guy is on Comstock's Airship - Last level, just before the final section. This one is simple. Have WinterShield on ( Invincibility after jumping from skylines ) and use the skyline to get to the exit at the opposite end of the room. When you land, head right, use Possession on the Rocket Launcher Turret and make a dash up the stairs and jump on the skyline at the top. and ...Bam !!! no more Handyman.
( Before doing this, make sure to get the weapons you will want to have with you for the last battle.)

FYI, the 3rd level battle on the Airship can also be skipped. Just set 6 Shock Jockey traps total on both entrances to the stairway, which will all Chain together and prevent anyone rushing from you and wait for the line to clear. By the Time 2 Patriots appear you'll be long gone - so long suckers.

General tips :
Farm money and Gear, as it is Necessary for Vigor Upgrades and Damage boosts.
Money is Very Scarce in 1999 mode so use it Only on what Upgrades you use most and Possess every machine you see, even the dollar bill one as it does not affect the cheevo.

Upgrade the Sniper Rifle to its MAX as soon as you can & use Tunnel vision whenever you are far away. Its a beast on Lady Comstock everytime.
The Fully Upgraded Shotgun is great for CQC situations and Patriots.
Upgraded Shock Jockey kills everything, especially when you place a few of them nearby each other to create a chain trap.
Upgraded Bucking Bronco gives you All the time you need to kill with your weapon of choice.
I tried using the Undertow on the last level, to pull the Patriots to the top and stop them from spawning again but did not have the time, as this level keeps you really busy, even with the Return to Sender Traps set.

Just a quick tip:

I used Possession with possession aid for most of the human enemies in the game. It even possessess Rocket & Flak cannon users and afterwards they kill themselves. Upgrade this fully ASAP and you will be laughing through most fights as SALT is everywhere. Just possess enemies from afar (zoom in with the sniper if need be and hit LT) as it travels very far.

This will make most fights easy.

Back in April 2013...nearly a decade ago now...I did a full let's play of Bioshock: Infinite on 1999 mode. I also earned the Scavenger Hunt achievement in this LP too, so it can help you kill two birds with one stone.

If you're stuck on a particular section, check it out here. I don't go for many collectibles except for Infusions - these prove vital upgrades as having a low health/shield base will spell instant death.

“1999 Mode” is the hardest difficulty in the game. The difficulty trophies do stack, so if you complete this mode first all other difficulty trophies will unlock. All difficulty trophies will unlock once the credits begin to roll.

For a full explanation of 1999 Mode and strategies to use, please see the description for Scavenger Hunt at the end of this guide.

The simplest tactics for the final battle.
Place 25-30 Return to Sender traps around the generator, as closely as possible. Don't pay attention to the enemies for now, the main thing is to quickly run for salts and quickly set traps around the entire generator.
Thus, bullets from ordinary enemies and patriots will not touch the generator AT ALL, and you can hide in the corner and slowly send the bird to destroy ships and airships.

If you go through battles with Lady Comstock using this method , then before the final battle you need to set traps BEFORE the last gap opens, otherwise the ghost will immediately appear and the gate from the square will close, and you simply won’t have enough of one set of salts to instantly remove all the XP.

I completed it twice, the first time on hard, the second in 1999. The difficulty of the battles is no different.

The simplest tactic for normal battles is to lift the enemies with a Bronco and shoot them from below with a shotgun (usually one shot per enemy is enough if you try to aim at the head). This tactic shows itself especially well in battles against “crows” and firemen. Accordingly, we upgrade the shotgun and Bronco first. For long distances we use a pumped-up sniper rifle.

It is VERY advisable to farm gear Winter Shield as soon as possible. With it, all fights where there are hooks/rails, even with the participation of handymen, become easier than ever - we jump on the hook, jump off the hook while the shield is working, shoot everyone, jump back, etc.

There will be some difficult moments where you can't get close to the enemies (for example, the beginning of Emporia). In such cases, do not forget that with tentacles you can not only scatter enemies, but also attract them, and with a pumped-up tentacle - three at a time. We pull them in and shoot them with a shotgun.

Three battles with Lady Kamstock are completed using the famous trick with Devils Kiss traps (https://youtu.be/xgFW-YnScVI).

We have already written about the final battle - place traps in a circle (you don’t need to hold the trap for 5-7 seconds - it’s a waste of salt, 2-3 seconds are enough, see the readiness of the trap by the animation of the circle around the sight), and then we ride on the rails with Winter Shield and shoot /we push everyone together, not forgetting to send the bird to shoot down the ships.

There are only 3 difficult moments in this mode:

The Good Time Club (several waves of enemies on stage) - before the start of the battle, place 3-4 fire traps near the curtain. We lift Fireman into the air and calmly shoot him.

The second wave - we go up to the second floor to the bar, set fire traps, wait for the raven man)) We kill the remaining people from the balcony with the Volley Gun.

third wave - You need to quickly zerg two turrets before the patriot appears, then again we run behind the bar and shoot the flying robots. We kite the patriot along the 2nd floor and stairs, hit him with lightning + Volley Gun rocket

The Factory (at the end, before the death of Fitzroy) - we ride along the rails and throw off enemies with the Undertow tonic. We kite Handyman around the coil and the post (I put a couple more traps under the coil) + fire from a rocket launcher or volley gun.

Emoria (the very beginning) - use a powerful combo of rails + Undertow, Hediman to kite calmly (there is a lot of room to run around) Lady camstock izimod https://youtu.be/xgFW-YnScVI

Yes, Return to Sender traps around the generator make life a lot easier. There is another interesting tactic. When the Airship arrives, it immediately releases two healthy machine gunners, but since you have a generator in traps, this is not a problem (traps, by the way, would be nice to add from time to time), so, don’t waste a bird on the Airships, it’s better to cling to the sky -line, jump onto the Airship (NO ONE IS GUARDING IT), and destroy the engine, then we successfully jump from it onto the skyline and call the bird to the area in front of the generator, where there are already 2 healthy machine gunners and a bunch of small ones, this way you save and ammo and HP! During a battle in this way, you can destroy 2-3 airships without getting into violent clashes.

The mode is not as difficult as the developers made it out to be. It differs from hard only in the absence of a navigation arrow, the penalty for death is 100 coins - if you don’t have them, you start from the checkpoint. And since the game is saved before almost every battle, I advise you not to spend money on resurrection, but to immediately press restart. When finding infusions, first of all, level up your shield completely, and then your health. In the Hall of Heroes location, in the left fork (I may be wrong, and the clothes appear randomly, but I still recommend finding them and not taking them off until the end) there is excellent Urgent Care clothing - these pants reduce the delay before charging the shield by 1 second, and increase the charging speed 2 times - it will help a lot in the future, this is the most useful perk in the game. As for weapons, first download a carbine (it initially has a good ratio of stopping power, accuracy and rate of fire), an RPG for damage and a magazine for heavy enemies, and a sniper rifle - with the third upgrade, its rate of fire increases by 100% and it turns into an excellent weapon not only long-range, but also melee, and weapons for yourself if you have free money. But the very first purchase, what is better to spend money on is the first improvement of Murder of Crows - this is the most cheating power in the entire game - firstly, it has a large range of action, many enemies are distracted by them and stop shooting, and if you shoot at them at this time they receive more damage, and secondly, with this improvement, crow traps appear near the corpses of enemies. The fight with the ghost of Lady Comstock may be difficult, but there is a way to complete it in 15 seconds - put the Charge power (better pumped up to AID) and the following equipment - from top to bottom - Burning Halo , Executioner, Kill to Live and Brittle-Skinned - charge, direct on a ghost, and so on 7-8 times, if there is not enough salt, Elizabeth will throw it, so the first two battles with her are completed in 15 seconds, but on the third, you can sit with a sniper on a small porch (there will still be Dollar Bill around the corner) , activate the mosquito while the soldiers are distracted by the mosquito - kill them and shoot the ghost. Well, and most importantly - throughout the game, evaluate the battlefield in advance - everything necessary for victory is there and in large quantities - the main thing is to notice it in time.
