How to unlock the Brass Balls achievement in BioShock - Definitive Guide

You DO NOT need to play on hard to get this achievement.

Watch the youtube video for more info on getting this achievement in one playthrough, on easy difficulty!

This is a glitch you can preform to get this achievement in less then 5 minute. You have to play to the end on easy difficulty of course.

HOW TO

1. Load the save "fountaine"

2.use the flamethrower with electric gel. It will be easy and much faster to kill him!

3. Once you go to drain the last container of adam, hit cn_A to drain.
AS SOON AS YOU PRESS cn_A, PRESS THE cn_start BUTTON!

4. Change the difficulty to Hard

5. YOU MUST PRESS THE START BUTTON FOR IT TO SAVE THE CHANGE

6. The achievement will pop when one of the "little sisters" give you the key to the city.

CONGRATS! you now have 1100!

does this method work for getting the achievement for simply beating the game on hard, regardless of dying??
0
0
By Cosmickology on 19 Feb 2010 12:26
yes, it will unlock if you died or not because the achievement for that is to beat the game on hard. It does not say weather or no you are not allowed to die.

For brass balls you need to disable the vita-chambers via the options menu. If you died even once you will nees to start back from the very beginning of the game

Just started a game on easy, haven't died. As long as I don't die (or if i do i reload my save file so I'm "death free") I should be fine right? Then just do as the video shows above. Just making sure don't want to waste hours of game time.

JaySten, You need to download the DLC (its FREE) There is an option to disable vita chambers. Make sure it says YES. TO answer your question, if you die you can NOT reload a previous save. Many people have tried it and it does not work. But you shouldn't die on easy. There are plenty of med packs!

you don't have to go to hard while draining him, as long as you do it before he is drained it works. I had to delete, etc following the instructions up there because I didn't have the VitaChamber option. I loaded iup my Fontaine game, turned the option on and changed to Hard right before pushing a to drain him of #4, ding.

Help please!!!

This acheivement is totally glitched. I've tried this multiple times and can't get it to work. I've tried clearing the cache and redownloading the add on. I'm using a save file on which I am 99.9 % sure that I have not died. But, technically this solution should give me "seriously good at this" even if I had died, but it won't give me that either. Is it possible that this has been patched?
Also, there isn't an option to turn off vita-chambers anywhere in my options menu.

How do I disable the vita-chambers? There is no option for me to turn them off. Also, why won't it give me "seriously good at this" using this same method?

You need to download the DLC for this game (its free!) once downloaded press pause and you'll see an option for it. If you still dont see it then delete the DLC from your HDD and delete your cache. Redownload the DLC and try again

Hey man, please answer. I did exactly what you did in the Video, but i did not get either of the Achievements. Do you have to start at Hard Difficulty ? Does the ''Disable Vita Chamber'' turned ON to get the Achievement ?
And does the Ryan Industries Plasmids DISABLE the Achievement ? I`ve heard that.
Please respond !

0
By General Joury on 22 Apr 2010 20:36
Joury, You can start on easy, I got all the achievements on ONE playthrough. You need to keep the Ryan industries DLC enabled because it contains the option for disabling the vita chambers. Which brings me to my next point. That option must be turn ON. I have done this on my GFs profile and my 2 brothers GTs and it unlocked on all of them. You must be doing something wrong

By on 23 Apr 2010 21:41
I`ve done that... I started at Easy Difficulty, with the disable Vita Chambers >ON<. I got to the Boss without dying and when i was gathering the last ADAM Vile i paused, and set the difficulty to Hard. No Achievement, neither. I have tried it for at least 3 times. Anyway, i`m doing a Hard Run now, i`m already at Arcadia, so i`ll guess i`ll get it legit ^^)
Anyway, answer me if you want, i`ll try it again then.
Thanks

Ok i don`t get this, i STARTED the game at HARD difficulty, and yes, i have the DLC. I DISABLED the Vita Chambers, cuz when i die i was kicked back to the menu. I just played the Game at Hard and NEVER changed the Difficulty, i fight Atlas, i kill him... No Achievement, NEITHER :@
I did not get Seriously Good At This nor Brass Balls, How the $hit did that happen ? Please give me the answer, otherwise i screwed up 10 hours of Gameplay >:(

Hey CaptH, I have a doubt. Yesterday a finished my second playtrhough on Hard, and also got all audio diaries. So, to get 1100G Brass balls is the only cheevo to unlock.
I still have a save on Hard in Fontaine, but in that playtrhough I died a plethora of times (Vita chamber option not activated). The doubt is:

Can I activate the option to disable the vita-chamber in that save and still unlock brass balls?
I'm not too excited to start a third playthrough again on hard to get this achievement..

By guif87 on 17 May 2010 12:57
You wont get the achievement. If you spawned in a vita chamber your screwed. If you have not spawned in a chamber however, you can disable the chamber and try for the achievement.

If that doesn't work your just going to have to start from the beginning. Playing on easy and progressing through the game without doing any of the non related story related objectives does not take long at all. Maybe a few hours.

1) try deleting your cache and then updating.

2) Yes if you use the camber even once it will void the achievement

3) It is possible to get this achievement in the way described above,. Many other users have reported success. I have as well. Just to make sure I had my friend try the above method as well. Needless to say He got it as well.

Hi

Ok scrap my first question as the achievement has now appeared since I went into the game. However, I do have another question instead (sorry).

Can you only turn Vita Chambers off once you have started a new game and you enter the options menu? I didn't see a general options menu on the main game screen.

Cheers

By Anthony Ajax on 27 Oct 2010 10:16
anthony ajax, it still indeed works. for it to not work anymore they need to patch the glitch from happening. Basically we are exploiting a fault in the programing to our advantage. If they did not patch this fault then it can still be executed. Others are still reporting to this day that it works just fine. Has it occurred that you are doing something wrong.

By Spartas Revenge on 18 Dec 2010 17:24
spartas, you can start fresh and get this achievement, as long as you meet the achievement requirements (do not use a vita chamber) you need to download the free DLC to get the option to turn vita chambers off. The 2nd requirement of beating the game on hard will be met w preform the glitch.
0
0
By on 18 Dec 2010 20:27
I guess to make the question even clearer...the only difference between this and doing it "legit" would be playing the entire game on Hard or switching to Hard only at the last Adam drain?

Witch VC's disabled in both cases, even if I die it's just game over>reload from last save?

By G3n3ralG3n0c1dE on 19 Dec 2010 14:34
G3n3ralG3n0c1dE, as stated, you will need the free DLC. Once downloaded you will have an option "disable vita chambers" make sure its ways on. Just play the game on easy. You shouldn't die on easy. MAKE SURE TO SAVE ON A REGULAR BASIS. I saved after every fight I had and after every event. If you die it will bring you to the main menu. Just load your save and off your go to kicking some more ass. Once your reach the last boss use the video to guide you through the glitch. Cant get any easier or simpler than that,

in addition to the above, this will nab you the full 1100 in one play through, with the easiest way of doing it. If you want to it the harder way then thats up to you. But most of us want to get achievements the fastest way and easiest way possible. I am glad you uber good at this game. But if you want to bring up the "legit" methods then why are you on a achievement site then?

To get the "disable" option I had to clear the cache (delete & re download the DLC - just to be sure)
I didn't start the game until the DLC had fully downloaded first.. the started up & patched the game
And the it is at the bottom of the list

I did play through on easy for the collector achievements on easy & managed to die of all things for not paying attention -_- but only once - and I can't remember what level it was anyway

Popped that time - both my previous 2 plays I never bothered to boost my health/eve (far too used to regenerating health, only died once each time)

I did it in one sitting, vita's off, no manual saves, no deaths, all on easy, rescuing every litttle sister, boosting health when ever the option was available
I would definatly add that you can not die, for this to work to the solution

It works!!!
TIP FOR ANYONE WHO CAN'T MAKE IT WORK: I tried several times to press START as soon as I pressed A with no success. Don't press START right after A. Wait little (not too long, maybe 1/2 sec). Delaying the press worked for me.

This worked on my first try. I used a vita chamber at some point on my previous saves so I just deleted them all along with the DLC. Then I cleared my caches. Rebooted. Downloaded the DLC. Started the game which downloaded the title update. Started a new game on easy and IMMEDIATELY disabled vita chambers. Then I played all the way through. Made sure to save it before getting on the elevator to go to Fontaine. I did exactly what the video showed. Used electric gel and on the 4th stab I pressed start almost at the same time I hit A to drain Fontaine, flipped it to hard, made sure to press start and not b to get out of the options screen. The achievement popped as I was handed the key. Thank you lX CaptHowdy Xl, you saved me a lot of time and effort.

It's that simple
I'm sorry if I offended you in my last post
But Not everyone needs to watch a long movie to figure out how to unlock an achievement, a quick nudge (just a sentence/description) could be enough for some gamers

this worked for me yesterday. Just to add how i got it. First played the game last week. I only downloaded the titile update. Played tru the whole game on easy. Got every cheevo but hard and the brass balls. I DIDNT have the dlc downloaded for the tonics, but collected and made all of them tru the game. Went to dashboard downloaded tonic dlc, cleared cache and loaded up the auto save. Did just like the guide says and BOOM completed the game. Great solution and it will work.

I had to run through this again on easy today as I had no saves from when I last played it.

Didn't work for me at first. I tried about 5 times.

Then I deleted the DLC from my hard drive.
Then I signed in on an old gamertag account and downloaded the DLC again. Signed out, then signed back in with my main gamertag and re-tried this method and it worked! Thanks!

Personally, I had started the game for the purpose of getting Brass Balls after having already beaten it on hard. I just recently reloaded that save (on hard, post-update) and had noticed like many others that the "Disable Vita-Chambers" option was no longer available. I continued playing through continuously saving. Whenever I died, I simply reloaded my pre-death save after respawning in the vita-chamber. I ended up beating Fontaine, worried after reading about all the issues with not getting the achievement. And, of course, I did not. So, I tried theKilling 757's solution mentioned above and it worked like a charm, saving me from playing the lengthy story and recollecting all my precious Tonics again.

If anybody is still wondering, rather you can die or not, I can confirm that you ARE allowed to die as long as Vita-Chambers are turned off. I tried this countless times, but it wouldn't unlock. Tried the whole re-download and clear cache thing, loaded up my game - timed the difficulty change just right - BANG 2 for 140G.

In other words, you are allowed to die as much, as you want as long as you don't spawn in a Vita-Chamber - it doesn't mess up your save game, since you'll be thrown out of the game and into the main menu :)

I'm a bit disappointed that what seems as a relatively easy achievement has a glitch as the top guide, but I still gave a +1. I have used glitches to get what I have considered difficult achievements (rarely) but I suppose difficulty is relative, and some people are not as into FPS as I might be.

This can be the problem of some people witch could just have changed or touched in the difficult option in some moment in the game.

Worked for me (05/08/2014). I must have died and used a Vita Chamber on my original easy playthrough as loading up the 'Fontaine' chapter and following this solution never seemed to work.

Disabled the Vita Chambers, played the campaign on Easy and then followed this solution - but the only difference I had to make was changing the difficulty to Hard BEFORE the final drain.

if you don't remember, you probably don't have a chance. you'd have to have reloaded a previous save on purpose in order to avoid it.
0
0
By Shadow XBL on 04 Aug 2014 14:58
My idea is to check the options: if I disabled Vita Chambers then I reloaded, else (probably) I just kept going on from the chamber!

Anyway (just in order to let you know) I got killed like a dumb: I entered a room, killed all the splicers, then left the xbox for 5 minutes without pressing the start button... when I came back some splicer had entered the room and killed me!!! cry

Just one other thing to try that worked for me. Both Hard achievements wouldn't pop for me when changing to hard during the fight, so on my 3rd try I loaded a save before the fight and changed it to hard there. When I beat Fontaine that time, both achievements popped. Better than deleting updates, dlc or starting over, so might be worth a try to others.

This games will never be patched. The method works just fine. I have no idea what you are on about in your mini rant. This games was made back in Aug 21, 2007. That was almost 8 years ago. 2k Games will never patch this game/glitch because it wouldnt be cost effective to spent the man hours and resources to go back and patch a game that doesnt sell anymore (new) and since they are not making anymore prints/copies of this game it would be a loss for them to go back and patch this. Therefore a patch will never, ever me made to patch up the glitch

As Howdy said, there's no way it's ever going to be patched if it hasn't already been. All I'm saying is that it just didn't work for me (and plenty of others judging by the comments) shit happens. I didn't down vote the solution though as clearly loads of people have had success using this method.

What people seem to fail to realize is that you need to download the update. If you downloaded the update and its still not popping then delete the update, clear your cache and re-download the update. That work for a few of my friends

I started a second game in 2011 intending to get Brass Balls and Seriously Good At This and was playing on Hard with Vita-Chambers disabled and saving every few minutes to get it legit. I stopped after getting 1/4 way through, and started it up again this week. There was a 2 MB required download update. I loaded an old medium difficulty Fontaine save and got the Seriously Good at This achievement this week by changing it to Easy when draining the last vial as per these instructions, and then went back to my 2011 last save and played through the rest of the game on Easy. However, following the instructions above did not get me Brass Balls. I tried many times, varying when and how I changed it to Hard. May try again tomorrow, but will not play through the game a 3rd time.

I have tried the solution about 20 times in various ways, and tried clearing the cache, but it isn't working.
Some thoughts -
1. this round, I harvested Sisters - not sure if that affects it.
2. I started it on Hard, then went to Easy half way through. Maybe this botched it.
3. The mandatory 2 MB system update. Not sure if this affects it. I still did the update after clearing system cache - solutions above are silent on it.
4. I may have died while playing on Hard. Vita-Chambers were disabled from the start, so I may have used a Save Game. (If dying disqualifies it, I'm not sure why everyone recommends saving frequently.)
Frustrating.

By WanderingPlotor on 15 Mar 2016 20:12
dying DOES NOT disqualifies it,I died 100's of time just as long as you reload & have vita chambers off...you are of course 100% sure you press Start to return to the game & NOT cn_B just asking since that was my mistake so that's pretty much my best bet.

I replayed it, and it finally worked
I deleted all old save games and the DLC, and cleared cache. I re-downloaded the DLC, started a new game on Easy and with disabled Vita-Chambers. I never died. I suspect it doesn't work, as other suggested, when you start on Hard, switch to Easy, then back to Hard at the end.

Stillllllll WORKSsssssssss :-) ......funny thing tho, when I went to drain Adam the 4th time it was as if the game knew what I was about to do and it glitched not letting me press A the final time. But luckily I whooped Fontaine once more and then it let me drain the final Adam bottle for some BRASS BALLS !!!

Still works! Also for those curious (Idk if this was posted before or not because I'm not reading through 263 comments lol), if you forget to turn vita chambers off at the start like me, you can change it after you harvest Fontaine's ADAM the fourth time (same thing as changing the difficulty).

Great guide but I have a little edit suggestion for people playing on Xbox One via Backwards Compatibility.

šticking the needle in then changing the difficulty didnt work 3 times in a row for me.

I had to wear him down to his last tiny bit of health on easy, then switch the difficulty up to hard, save, and then take the last few shots to kill him on hard.

Not sure why it would be different from the 360 version, but this helped me get both the Brass Balls and Seriously Good at This achievements.

Thanks for your help fella.

Alright, I'm going to need some help. I've tried a lot of the suggestions in the comments, but nothing's working. The weird thing is that when I go to change the difficulty, it is blank instead of saying "hard." Thoughts?

Edit: NEVER MIND! If you go twice left, you get "hard." It worked for me after figuring that out. Leaving this up in case anyone else has the same question.

Works perfectly on backwards compatibility. Started on easy, "vita chambers disabled" switched to ON. Didn't die once, as soon as Fontaine's last bit was done and the cinematic tripped, I switched to hard, pressed start to lock in my setting change, and the achievement unlocked when the ending cutscene tripped.

I didn't even download the DLC, I played the whole game, cleaned up all of the achievements except this one and beating the game on hard.

I died a few times, as long as you reload your last save well then you technically didn't die but if I remember it right you'd have to start all over if you're playing without vita-chambers & don't reload but it's good idea to let others know how you did it, it might help some to see where they went wrong 😁

By Pale on Pale on 10 Oct 2019 19:19
Well that depends on what you mean, if you are referring to the X1 version then there are no DLC since it's incorporated in to the game but I'm guessing you might mean how to install the X360 version on Xbox One ....
1. Press the "Home" button on your controller (the xbox symbol with light in)
2. Scroll 1 down to "My games & apps"
3. Click again to open "See all"
4. Find the game in question, in this case "Bioshock" (Notice there are 2 sections "Installed" & "Ready to install)
5. While having the game highlighted, press the "Start" button
6. Scroll down to "Manage game & add-ons"
7. Scroll 1 down to "Ready to install" (if you don't own the DLC it of course won't show here)

i dont know what to tell you dude, the other people who have tried this had no issues. It must be something with your save file. I cant help you with that. Try deleting the cache, DLC, and save file. Load up the game to download the UPDATE. Now go back to dashboard and go into marketplace and download the DLC again. Load up the game. Make sure the disable vita chamber option is set to ON. Now start a new game.

wow, 10 hours???? that sucks. Thats why I got all my achievements on 1 playthrough lol.

oh my shit, i just deleted my comment that took me like 15 min to make ><

Well, here it is again:

I started the Game on HARD and never changed the difficulty, i had the Vita Chambers set to ON. I died like 20 times but i went back to the menu.
I got myself to Fontaine, i beat his ass, and guess what, NOTHING !
I just wasted 10 hours of stressing Gameplay just for 2 Achievements, and they are both glitched, cause i didnt get Seriously Good At This either, while i started and ended on hard.

Well, i`ve already tried that method of deleting the Cache and redownload the DLC and stuff, didnt work for me either.

I think this game is screwed for me, no offense, i love Bioshock, i already have 1000/1000 on Bioshock 2, and i only need 2 more on Bioshock 1.
But thanks to that really bad glitch i can never complete this game while i calready did.

Anyway, thanks for the help, but i guess i`m never gonna get it.

About 10 minutes ago I did this. Didn't work yesterday when I reach the end of the game, because I died sometimes during the playthrough. So today I started a new game on easy, turned off the vita-chambers and, as I already had the other achievs, run from the beginning until the end stopping only 2 times, and saving only 2 times (despiting the auto-saves). I think was around 3 hours of playing and the 140 GS unlocked for me :)

Posted by lX CaptHowdy Xl on 21 Feb 10 05:31:58

CaptHowdy, thanks very much for posting this guide. I can confirm it still works (12/19/10) for the Seriously Good At This ach.

Let me humbly ask for clarification before starting my Easy>Disable Vita Chambers ON run. When you said earlier "if you died even once you need to start over" you were only referring to if you had spawned in a vita chamber on your gamesave, correct?

It is possible to die, go to menu, and reload as long as it's on a game with Vita Chambers Disabled set to ON, correct?

This is why some people are able to utilize legit Hard gamesaves they had used by reloading every time they died, correct? Just want to be sure because I am a bit hung up on the idea of screwing up hours of work by not dying.

Thanks again for this great guide and all the feedback response.

I would just like to speak on your comment, CaptHowdy. I do agree with you that it's extremely annoying that somebody would come to an achievement solution and brag about how he got his legit and put the glitchers down.. but I completely disagree with your statement that this site is only about getting achievements the fastest possible way. This is about solutions and results, and there is plenty of legitimacy here to pass around.

Thanks for the solution, I'll be trying it out soon!

thanks man worked perfectly.. 2 things i would like to add for anyone still reading this endless mess of comments..
1) you CAN die.. as long as you have disable vita chambers turned on.. and when you die you go back to the menu.. just reload your last save and you should be good to go (solution still worked for me at least)
2) anyone who is still have problems getting disable vita chambers to appear in the options should use statictance's solution 2 down from this 1 and disregard the part about starting on hard and start on easy..
thanks again man

Still works as of March 15, 2013. I also got this with the GoD version, when this game went on sale for $5. Cheevo popped between the Atlas cutscene and the sisters' endgame cutscene.

I started playing on hard, then changed to easy part way thru for time's sake, and tried this switch at the end. It did not work.

Started a new game on easy, raced thru it in 2-3 hours, performed the switch, and it worked. Hope that this can confirm and clear up any confusion there may be.

Finally got around to beating this game. I can confirm that you DO NOT have to go through the entire game with the vita chambers turned off. You actually don't have to go through the game at all with that free DLC. I went through the entire game and got every other achievement to get 50/51, went to dashboard, downloaded the DLC, reloaded 'Fontaine', paused the game as soon as it loaded (where you are in the room with Atlas), scrolled down to turn vita chambers off, and perform the rest of the solution as stated and it popped when the little sister handed me the key.

Frosty, guess you didnt read this:

HOW TO
1. Load the save "fountaine"
2.use the flamethrower with electric gel. It will be easy and much faster to kill him!
3. Once you go to drain the last container of adam, hit the A button to drain.
AS SOON AS YOU PRESS A, PRESS THE START BUTTON!
4. Change the difficulty to Hard
5. YOU MUST PRESS THE START BUTTON FOR IT TO SAVE THE CHANGE
6. The achievement will pop when one of the "little sisters" give you the key to the city.

and how is a 3 min video long????? I posted the video to SHOW HOW TO DO IT!!! how is that a downfall? LOL

Everyone was able to complete the above without any help. Take a look at flip407's comment. Not my fault you want the achievement in less then a min. No one is forcing you to watch the video. For those people I posted a TEXT based solution as well. So what/where is the issue???

either you just want to gripe for the sake of being "that guy" or you dont know how to follow directions very well

I did this quite awhile ago but seeing there's been a few that's been having problems lately,I thought I'd add my 2cents,which is very simple...KEEP TRYING!!! I had to try a few times & here's what I did wrong,I pressed cn_B to go back to the game even though the 5th point in the guide loud & clear says PRESS cn_start START so try that & then just keep at it & finally as a last resort there's Prim4l Dre4ms' solution 5 comments above.

Can confirm as of 5/16/18 this still works.

What I did was, I saved at the elevator to Fontaine, but the first time through forgot to change the difficulty. So I reloaded the game's Fontaine save (the game creates both a save and autosave when the elevator opens on the Fontaine level). I tried it several times, changing the difficulty before, during, and after the forth ADAM drain, and nothing. So I thought it was patched.

Then I tried one last time, by reloading my save at the elevator, defeated all of the enemies, then changed the difficulty before I did the forth ADAM drain. I didn't see the achievements pop, but they were unlocked on the achievements list.

Those still planning on doing this but not sure what the settings should be:
I just did it the following way->

Played on 360 console.
Playing online, had all updates installed.
Had the dlc already installed.
Started new game on easy.
The moment the game let me press pause, I went to options and set the "Disable Vita-Chambers" to "On".
Playing thru the campaign normally, also used some of the dlc tonics since they seemed useful. Also used save game normally whenever I wanted a break and continue later. (used "Load game" when continued)
In the end used the method provided in solution: Right after I hit "A" to drain the last (4th) portion of Fontain's adam, I press "Start", change the difficulty to "Hard" with d-pad, and then hit again "Start" to continue the game.
Achievement popped after Fontains dying cutscene.

Only thing I didn't do was die, was able to play thru the campaign without dying so no idea if that would affect it or not.

I was playing the disc version on backwards compatibility with the Series X using a new save that’s I made for this run. I had to reload the checkpoint and do the final boss battle five times before it finally unlocked.

Be sure to: press the menu button to save the hard difficulty sett

Can confirm this still works 12 Nov 2022. The first few times I tried no luck, but after reinstalling the game and dlc both this and Seriously Good At This popped for 140G. Works with Ultimate Rapture update and I played on XB1 with the 360 disc version. The best thing I can advise is you have to time the pause and difficultly switch just right. The fourth time you press A to take his ADAM pause right when he hits you and switch difficultly. Be sure to press start to confirm the change. Then when you resume the game the cheevos both popped when he hit the floor in the cut scene. Good luck!

A couple of questions:

1) I just downloaded the DLC with the extra plasmids. However, Brass Balls has not appeared in my list of achievements. Even though I haven't won it surely it should still be there listed as a secret achievement that I need to win to find out what it is?

2) At the great risk of annoying you as I know you've already answered this more than once but just for 100% clarification: if I were to load up my Fontaine save point which I used on my original playthrough but I HAD used a Vita Chamber at least once then the achievement would NOT unlock?

Any help with either of these questions would be greatly appreciated.

Also have you heard about this before? Check out the post at the top about the guy talking about it being impossible for him to get the achievement because of a different glitch in the game:

Hey guys, just letting you know this glitch still works. I am 100% sure on how to do this.
I tried completing it on easy and switching the difficulty to hard whilst draining the last adam and it never worked.
Heres what I did:
1) Play through to the end of the game on easy.
2) Make sure you have a save 'Fontaine'
3) Quit back to dashboard.
4) Go to markertplace - Bioshock - download - Ryan's Plasmids extra content.
5) Load up your 'Fontaine' Save file.
6) Beat Fontaine.
7) Hit 'A' to drain the last ADAM from Fontaine.
8) As soon as you press 'A' Pause the game, Options, Change the difficulty to hard AND turn 'Disable Vita Chambers' On.

As above, the cheevo will pop when the little girl is giving you the key to the city.
This 100% works because I tried every other method.

You must have the downloadable content to be able to turn Vita Chambers off.
When you load up your last save file, the downloaded content should appear telling you what its all about.

Hope this helps.

Also, big thanks to CaptHowdy for restoring the faith. well done dude!

At risk of sounding like a breokken record of comments, I dont konw what I did wrong. So a week ago I used the video method to get the seriously good at this achievement and be cause I used a old playthough save file where I did and used a vita chamber I did not get the brass balls. So I started a new run though on easy did not die got to the end and no bleep blop. Because I thought I missed some thing read back though this thread and followed every comment I could, and still nothing. I deleted the dlc cleared the cache deleted all but one save file redownloaded everthing and still with multiple attempts of following the video and even trying different timing with pausing and changing the difficulty setting still no little bleep blop. I know it works cause it did work for me to get the first achievement. Any suggestions would very greatful. I am not looking forward to having to run though again and do it "legit" as they say, seeing how I just did a run though. this is the last thing I have to get, please help. Again sorry for the broken record-ness.

Guys, I have been struggling on this for at least twelve hours. I had a save file back from 2013 after 10 tries it didn't work, even when the game was completed w/o deaths and Vita-Chamber was disabled.

So I started a new game on "Hard" difficulty with Vita-Chamber off. I changed the difficulty to "Easy" at the start, completed the game and before the last container switched the difficulty back to Hard. It didn't work... And nine times more.

So here's what I did:
1. I played on XBO and the game automatically installed with Ultimate Rapture Edition update (which is free)
2. I started the game on "Easy" difficulty instead of "Hard", Vita-Chamber was already off due to my previous walkthrough.
3. I completed the game until the final container IN A SINGLE RUN W/O DEATHS (it took around 2 hours), pressed start when the last jar was halfway drained, switched the difficulty to Hard and finally pressed start once again.
4. It popped first try.

Good luck to everyone who still tying to get this.

After reading through the last 121 comments I have discovered that the only true method that worked for me is the above solution by "theKilling 757". This is about 35 comments above this one. Follow his instructions perfectly and once back at "Fontaine" press start and you will immediately notice that there is all of the sudden the "Disable Vita Chamber" option (for the people who didn't have it in their option menu to begin with). This is how you will know that "theKilling 757's" instructions actually worked. If not don't even bother attempting the achievement because it will not work. Go back to his instructions and try again. Once you do have this option don't change anything until you are ready to deliver the last vile. Now press "Start" go down to the difficulty and use the "Left Stick" to select "Hard". Look down at the "Disable Vita Chamber" option, it should say "ON". If this is true press the Start button to exit out of the pause menu. Do not use the "B' button to exit out of the menu. Now stick his punk ass with the last vile and the Achievement is yours. If you did not get this achievement after this method during the cutscene then there's either two things you did wrong. (1) You must have died at some point in the game or (2) You messed up somewhere during this method. As of Aug 11, 2011 I have officially completed Bioshock and the above method still works. Good Luck!

Yes i saw it was an achievement from DLC content.
The DLC content on this site is referred to as 'Title update'.
When starting this game, it automatically started downloading 'title update 1.1'
Because of this i assumed that i had the update needed for the brass balls achievement.
Nowhere did i saw i needed the Ryan industries plasmids and tonics so i did not download that specific DLC (i didnt even know it existed at the time).

After not getting the achievement i started looking through the guide comments and i think its clear i wasnt the only person to get it wrong with the right DLC content needed.

I only stated why i downvoted the solution so it could be cleared up/added in the original guide.
Nowhere did i mention that the guide was bad/crap. I just wanted to help to make the guide better.

I feel sorry that you need to have a go at me for that reason.

I had the problem where I followed the instructions and only got "beat the game on hard", but brass balls would not pop no matter what i tried. so i went through the game starting from an old save that started a few minutes after entering the rapture so I didn't have to go through all the initial game dialog. (bad idea :/)

so after rushing through, not dying and disabling the vita chambers and completing the game nothing popped and I was quite frustrated. I tried the solutions on this page to delete the DLC, re-download DLC, re-download updates for game, login as different person, nothing would work on that save file.

so what finally worked and what I believe was the fix out of everything I did was follow the instructions to start a completely new game and make sure the disable vita chambers was set to "ON" from the very start. so 4 hours later after starting the game and defeating fontaine one last time, it finally popped.

ty so much for the cheevo solution, there is some weird ass bugs with it but this solution will work.

So I tried it while signed in to XBL and no achievement... Even tried deleting DLC, clearing cache, reboot 360, re-download with extra profile, re-download title update, start "New Game" on "Hard", verify "Disable Vita Chambers" is "ON", quit to Main Menu, sign out, sign back in with primary, "Load Game" titled "Proving Grounds" (also tried "Fontaine"), verified "Diasbale Vita Chambers" was "ON", followed "glitch" process as normal, and no weasle going pop...

I would like to point out that this is a new console for me and I do NOT have my DLC certificate license transfered to this system yet. M$/Xbox are horrible with customer service so after almost a month of calling back, and saying just about anything and everything bad about their company/support, I have a manual transfer in the works but won't be accomplished until 3/27-3/29...

With that being said, I you need to make sure that if you have changed consoles since starting BioShock, you will need to transfer all of your DLC certificate licenses to your new console. I had downloaded the DLC awhile back on a different console and had started a "New Game" on "Easy" on my current one. What I realized was while playing, the DLC tonics/plasmids weren't even apart of the game nor the "Disable Vita Chambers" selection under "Options." Never recieved the "Downloaded Content" screen when I started the game up on the new console and had started BioShock prior to the first title update/DLC on the old so I think that might be my problem...

I am trying for an achievement that my achievements list recognizes but not the actual game. I believe that since I started the "New Game" on "Easy" from the new console WITHOUT having downloaded the title update or transfer the DLC license to my new console, I will have to do so and then play through the game again to obtain this achievement.

In lamens terms...

The "Game Save" that I have on my console at the moment is not able to allow me to obtain the DLC achievement due to never recognizing the DLC in the first place. EVEn though I had the DLC and title update previously downloaded on a different console, it does not recognize the DLC nor achievement credentials on my new console...

I will try to stay positive on this matter and see if I can't figure something out. I am hoping that my theory is correct but the way things work out when it comes to achievements, who knows?

So I went back, kept trying at it, and eventually got it to pop once I followed these EXACT steps:

*Note - I had game saves from trying the glitch ealier (after DLC and update re-downloaded) as well as the original game saves from "Proving Ground", "Fontaine", and the "Fontaine (Auto Save)." When I first tried the re-download process, I did in fact get the "Downloaded Content" screen when loading up my game save for the first time. The try I got the achievement to pop on did NOT show the DLC screen when loading the save. Don't know if it makes a difference but that's up to anyone else to figure out. I finally got it to pop and I tried to explain as best as I could. Otherwise, I'm am FINALLY done with this one!

Thanx CptHowdy!
1.) Delete the DLC while signed in on your primary account (account wainting achievement)

2.) Clear your HDD cache. If you have a newer console with built in memory, clear both just to be safe

3.) Reboot your Xbox 360 console

4.) Sign in to a separate (or just temporary extra) gamertag

5.) Download the DLC and wait for it to finish

6.) Load the game up and download the title update when prompted

7.) Start a "New Game" on "Hard" difficulty setting

8.) Wait until AFTER BioShock title screen and "Pause" game when you reach the surface of the water

9.) Under "Options" turn the "Difficulty" to "Hard" and turn "Disable Vita-Chambers" to "On"

10.) Press the "Start Button" to confirm your selection (DO NOT press any other button than "Start Button")

11.) "Pause" the game once again and "Quit to Main Menu"

12.) Sign out of extra gamertag and back in to primary (achievement obtaining account)

13.) "Load Game" from "Main Menu" titled "Proving Grounds" (or "Fontaine" if you did not save prior)

14.) Follow glitch process correctly and it should pop literally right before the "Little Sister" hands you the "Genetic Key to the City." Give the cut scene a few seconds to begin and if you don't have it by the time the sub reaches the surface, try it again.

I had a lot of the same problems as others in that only "Seriously Good at This" (40g) unlocked and not Brass Balls (100g). I followed a slightly modified version of "the bunk 187"s solution from this comment page and it worked for me! Here are the exact steps I took:

1) Go to System > Storage > (highlight your storage device) Press cn_Y > Clear System Cache

2) (your storage device) > BioShock > Genetic Improvements from Ryan Inc. > Delete

3) Turn console off

4) Restart console, sign in as different gamertag

5) Games > Search Games > (search for BioShock) > Extras > Ryan Industries Plasmids and Gene Tonics > Download

6) Once it has download, Xbox Guide > Sign Out

7) Sign in to your gamertag

8) Play BioShock, load Fontaine AutoSave, follow the original steps

Doing this was the only way I even had the option to Disable Vita-Chamber when pausing the game. Before, even though I had downloaded and installed the DLC, the option to Disable Vita-Chamber was never even present. I hope this works for others that are struggling.

Brass Balls is actually a pretty easy achievement to get. To make things really easy, just be sure to save when you can. Actually, make that "save every 15 minutes." The game isn't super impossible on Hard, but the last thing I'm sure anyone would want to do is re-do 3 hours of gameplay. Also, save at certain points you know that might be tough. You can also use Vita-Chambers as a visual reminder to save. See a Vita-Chamber? Save.
So, saving is essential. Next is trying to set up Jack to be a powerhouse. First and foremost, your primary weapon is going to be the Wrench. The wrench is a great weapon because 1) It requires no ammo and 2) Plenty of good tonics linked to it. The other weapons will still be used, but only against Big Daddies and bosses.
You're going to want a minimum of 4 Combat Tonic Slots, 4 Physical Combat slots, and 3 Plasmid Slots. For the Combat Slots, I recommend having Armored Shell 1 & 2 (higher defense) and Wrench Jockey 1 & 2 (higher wrench damage). Note: The tonics stack, so make sure to have both equipped.
Physical Tonics will be Bloodlust (heals for every wrench hit), Natural Camoflauge (stop moving, turn invisible), and Sportsboost 1 & 2 (move faster, fast wrench swings). Now, with these tonics you can be a wrench swinging, killing machine. The camoflauge is for when you get spotted by cameras. Stay still, and the bots will just fly around you but they will never attack if you don't move.
Engineering Tonics are unnecessary. You will need 3 Plasmid slots for Electrobolt, Incinerate, and Telekinesis (all of those are free). Upgrade the plasmids when you can, but you don't need any of the other ones. These three will get you through the game just fine.
For the Little Sisters, you can choose to save them (so you can get Armored Shell 2) or you can harvest them all (more ADAM right away). The game can be completed either way, but I chose to harvest them. You'll end up with extra ADAM either way, which you can use for other Tonic slots (if you feel they are necessary). Although I shouldn't have to say it: be sure to upgrade your health and EVE.
Upgrade all of your weapons and be sure to make ammo. The shotgun will be your friend early on, since the Electric Buck ammo is murder for Big Baddies (be sure to aim at the head, and time your shots. As soon as they aren't stunned, blast them again). The trip wires will also help against the Bouncers (lead them through a small corridor and watch them kill themselves). Electric Gel for the Chemical Thrower is highly recommended and should be used often towards the end of the game (against the Big Daddies, of course).
Atlas shouldn't give you too much trouble. Use the chemical thrower and the rocket launcher (Incinerate + Heat Seekers) and he should go down without much trouble (if he does, make sure you save beforehand).
Just stay focused and stick to the core build I mentioned and everything should be fine.

Vita chambers off, essential. It may work for some lucky players by reverting to your last save point when you die but I recommend not risking it, it could take over 3 hours and although Bioshock is a kick-ass game you may have other achievements to be cracking on with. Dont risk it, turn vitas off.

I also read both guides and have to agree they are different.

This one focuses alot more on the core combat, and I think I have some advice to take from both.

I'm on my second playthrough on easy (for quick historian...forgot the first 2 when I played my hard playthrough.) I guess next I'll try for this.

I started this playthrough this morning thinking that "Adaptive Training" meant I would have vita chambers, only to find out I was wrong two hours later. I don't see an option that toggles vita chambers at all. I have the Ryan's Plasmids pack or whatever its called, and I know for sure it worked because I bought the extra plasmids on my easy playthrough. What do I do??

Wow what a great guide. I wish I had seen this before I started the game. So much easier with just the wrench! Using the camouflage and silent footsteps you will demolish any splicers. The only thing I found was: if you're not going to use any hacking tonics (or extra slots) get freeze and freeze any machine before hacking (slowing the fluid significantly). Good job HybridPK!

I just wanted to add, if by chance you beat the game without the Download Content and would've gotten the achievement, just download it and reload your last saved game. I just so happened to have a save spot in the elevator b4 the final boss, just had to beat him again and I got it. Saved me lots of hours

It's too bad the TA ratio is only 1.36. Since the achievement comes with an automatic free update, the completion percentage should be 8% or so, and not 100%. It would probably be one of my best achievements. Fun achievement though.

Just so you all know... you don't have to disable your vita-chambers in the options menu to get this achievement. I should say, you don't lose the achievement if you die, go to a vita-chamber, and load up your last save. I played the game through dying many times and reloading because I did not know you could disable vita-chambers until i was 3/4 done with the game. Right after I killed Fontaine I got the achievement.

By TetraVega on 17 Jan 2011 10:25
^ It is written in the achievement description mate; 'Complete the whole game on Hard difficulty without using a Vita-Chamber'. You use a Vita-Chamber automatically whenever you die, however in order to avoid Vita-Chambers altogether you can turn them off in the options menu before starting a new game and then when you die the game will load your most recent save.

So the basic principle is to turn Vita-Chambers off, start a new game on Hard and save very often. The rest of the guide above is all about some techniques to help you beat the game on Hard, but IMO this game is very easy and enjoyable and as long as you save often there is no real challenge.

For anyone who is glitched on this achievement, i did some research and found it is due to updating/downloading across multiple consoles. Since I go through 360s like i go through beer - i was unable to get this achievement until doing the following. Originally, this was from a 2k forum, posted by a 2k employee. I would follow what HybridPK wrote, but if you do not get the achievement at the end (or during play notice there is no option for disable vitachambers) - do the below and you should be fine.

- Delete the DLC
- Cleare the harddisks cache (go to memory/hard drive/hit Y for options, the X, X, LB, RB, X, X)
- Rebooted the 360
- Use/Create an Xbox Live account that has not downloaded the DLC or the updates yet.
- Download the DLC
- Started game and downloaded title update
- Started new game (hard)
- Welcome screen for new tonics will pop, checked to ensure "Disable Vita Chambers" option was in effect (last on options menu)
- quit to the title screen, signed out and logged in with my normal Xbox live account
- Loaded save game (hard)
-Checked for "Disable Vita Chambers" option
- Got Brass Balls (had a save file right before the final fight that met no death criteria)

Thanks for this information!!!! I played through the game on hard 3 times without dying (i.e. not using Vita Chambers). I thought I must have done something wrong. Very frustrating, but it is such an awesome game it was hard to complain too much. I followed your instructions, loaded my last game save, finished the game and got the achievement. Thanks again! :D

Thank you Philly. Whats weird is I don't have the dlc for my german and still no cheeve. Maybe I will delete the update, try a different box and try to get this offline with no update. Load my save, not play whole game again. I just swiched to ntsc and saw the extra plasmids, that is how I know I don't have the dlc on the german saves.

Thank you so much for this, I did this back in 2014 and the achievement didn’t pop. It always bothered me but I wasn’t replaying it any time soon.

Just downloaded it on my series S, loaded up my end game save, beat Fontaine and it popped! That’s all 3 Bioshock games 100%ed finally, my OCD can finally rest.

Worked perfectly! After following the solution, I loaded a game save on easy and turned the vital chambers disable on. On the final part where you extract Adam from Fontaine, I pressed start, went to options, changed it to hard, and it popped. Glad I didn't have to go through it again. I bought the game 6 years after first playing it just to get this.

READ ALL OF THIS TO SAVE YOU TIME AND HELP YOU COMPLETE THE STORY QUICKLY WITHOUT DYING

You must download the extra BioShock content and when you start a new game on hard difficulty press START and go to settings and turn "disable vita-chambers" ON. There, if you die you go to the main menu and load up save progress.
Make sure you save all the time after every battle and when you have lots of ammo and health. Even if you have half health at ends of battles, just press B to replenish your health, so in case you go into a battle without full health you will be most likely to lose and die.
Try to avoid as much enemies as possible and try to save ammo on the rocket launcher, shotgun, bow and flamethrower. These weapons are most effective against the last boss. Also, using the Plasmid which involves the dummy is probably the most useful to use because if you want to avoid battles, you can place a dummy somewhere and run past whilst splicers are attacking the dummy. Don't attempt to kill every big daddy, only three or four in the game is sufficent enough as killing many big daddies will waste too much ammo and health. Make sure when you attempt to kill a big daddy that they have a little sister with them, so when you do kill a big daddy you can get the ADAM off the little sister. I would recommend harvesting the little sisters as you will only be killing a few and harvesting gives you more ADAM.
Try not to take out big daddies until you have the grenade launcher/ promitixy mines/ heat-seeking RPG and/or the flamethrower/ liquid nitrogen/ electric gel. These are the most effective against Big daddies and the final boss.
Once you have enough ADAM to buy upgrades, I would recommend a health upgrade and the dummy updgrades and the main priorities to buy. Don't bother buying an upgrade for the EVE as there are plently of EVE hypo's lying around in the game.
For the last boss I recommend having the plasmids of telekenesis and the dummy. There are a few tanks lying around during the boss fight, hurling these at Fontaine firstly with telekensis is effective. Then, at the latter part of the fight Splicers will appear and try to attack you, so use the dummy plasmid to distract the splicers. Dont bother killing them, just concentrate Fontaine by using the grenades, flamethrower, etc.
--- If for some reason the achievement doesn't unlock at the end like it has on many occasions, delete the download and delete all updates from your cache. Then download the update on another Xbox Live profile (silver will do) and then play the game on your normal profile and load the game back up and defeat the last boss again. If none of this makes sense, send me a message and I will be happy to help with this achievement. My gamertag is tremberz. ---

Also one last point - THIS IS IMPORTANT - WHORE THE SAVE BUTTON, USE IT WHEN YOU HAVE A LOT OF AMMO AND HEALTH, BEFORE EACH BATTLE AND AFTER EACH BATTLE. ON HARD, THE ENEMIES TAKE ALOT OF DAMAGE AND DO ALOT OF DAMAGE, AND THE SINGLE SPLICER CAN MAKE YOU USE UP 5 HEALTH PACKS, SO SAVE BEFORE HAND AND IF YOU THINK YOU COULD'VE SAVED A FEW HEALTH PACKS, LOAD UP YOUR PROGRESS AND REDO IT.

Please comment, hopefully this guide helps.

This solution is for people who have completed the game without using a vita-chamber, but didn't get the achievement. I'm just looking to provide information that is annoying to find if you're in a particular situation. It is intended to be additional information from the other more complete "for everyone" guides.

1> You MUST download the free update for Bioshock called "Ryan Industries Plasmids and Gene Tonics". This is not a patch so does not auto-download just from loading the game, but it is free from the XBL Marketplace. Not having this will prevent this achievement from unlocking. Here is a handy link for you: http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Ryan-Industries-Pl...

2> You do NOT need to select the option to Disable Vita-Chambers. But, clearly if you die, you must reload your previous save and not continue after spawning in the vita-chamber. So, save often.

3> If you didn't download the above mentioned free DLC but ran through the game on hard reloading saves to avoid vita-chambers and didn't get the achievement, YOU STILL CAN. Just download the update and then load your save just before the boss fight. Kill him and during the cut scene... bleep bloop!

Bass Balls achivement is not hard, I managed to end the game with 600+ adam (before fighting Fountaine) with vitachambers off.

This achievement is easier saving the little sisters. Toughest part is hunting Big D.s till u get Hipnotize Big Daddy.
Hipnotize Big Daddy makes getting adam a breeze. No, hipnotizing a Big daddy doesnt let you get directly to the little sister (She runs away to the hole in the wall and u cant touch her in the process). But what you do is hipnotize BigD.A and then go and shoot BigD.B (a standard pistol bullet should do) then sit back and watch as the 2 giants tear each other to pieces. If yours looses the brawl, the other big daddy will be weak enough to kill without effort. Doing as stated above u should be able to get all little sisters and also helps when getting the Emp bomb parts. (thus making ur game a lot more easier). they also are great bodyguards against everything else, so take that plasmid with you.

Save your Grenade Launcher and Chemical Thrower ammo for Fountaine, Use your Shotgun on Mr.Bubbles (Only in case if the one u were betting on looses, see above; or u dont have hipnotize big D yet) otherwise, Fontaine. Use your pistol on cameras and your wrench on everything else.

As for your character. u must specialize him on the use of the wrench. ur gonna need:

3 plasmid slots:
*electro bolt
*telekinesis/hipnotize big daddy
*target dummy (gets things off your back and gives you time to run/hack/prepare another strategy.)

Note: Dont take the level 2 plasmids (electro bolt 2, incinerate 2...etc) by the time level 1 plasmid stop being usefull u would be able to get level 3 plasmids, only level 2 u should get is Hipnotize Big daddy 2 (and ur given that for free)

Note 2: if u have extra adam, u can get a 4th slot for winter blast 3 or incinerate 3 (for the electrically charged splicers and fountaine)

All physical tonics slots:
*Sport Boost 1 & 2 (Wrench speed)
*Natural Camo (Best plasmid)
*Eve Link 2 (saves you some eve hipos)
Bloodlust (Get healthier by killing stuff, best trade ever)

Note: Against fontaine u might want to replace sport boost for medical expert 3 and eve link 1 and bloodlust for eve saver and natural camo for whatever you want.

ignore the engineering tonics:(ur gonna hack most early in the game, afterwards ur just gonna use autohack tools and autohack researches) though u might wanna put the prolific inventor and clever inventor tonics in.

All combat tunic slots:
*Armored Shell 1 & 2 (essential, AS2 is another reason to save little sisters)
*Wrench Jockey 1 & 2 (Wrench damage, essential)
*Wrench Lurker 2/Damage research 2 ( Use WL2 if u like 2 sneak around otherwise just take DR2)

Note: For fountaine Take Damage Research 2 and swap Wrench Jokey for Damage research 1 and Static Discharge 2 (SD2 will help against some of the spicers that appear during the fight).

Get ALL health and Eve Upgrades, dont ask why...

Use the UInvent machines mainly for autohack tools, and only hack things when the difficulty bar is less than half (anything higher than half has a chance to be unhackable) and only then use an autohack tool. Hack All Health Stations, They heal you cheaper than a firstaid kit, and they finish off any beaten up splicer.

Research everything, specially the little sisters( they give health and eve upgrades) as the tonics and damage bonus are gonna be needed.

U dont need to get all weapons upgrades but its best to get at least 4 upgrades (fully upgrade Grenade Launcher and Chemical Thrower),if ur getting them all, then go for Shotgun next, then crossbow, just leave pistol and machine gun upgrades for last. Ur barely ever gonna need the machine gun.

Use your money to buy firstaid kits, eve hypos and Auto Hack tools (Always carry autohack tools with you),

If you trigger an alarm, cast a dummy, and stay still until natural camo sets in (the dummy should last long enough for the camo to trigger) once in camo, bots cant find you.U might also want to camo in a place where splicers cant bump into you.

When fighting fountaine remember, that hes has no special inmunity except for the element hes on at the moment, which means that u can freeze him when hes not ice, and incinerate when hes not fire... the dummy works too so you can set traps for him, like putting dummies over proximity bombs... be creative, but do it fast. Also hacking the security bots is a great idea. help you keep the splicers off your back.Just dont try to wrench him to death.

Follow this and you might be able to make it without much fuss, Just remember to use ur head before doing something...And Save often.

Brass Balls - 100
Complete the game on Hard difficulty without using a Vita-Chamber

*Spoilers*

This achievement is really easy. You can play on the difficulty Easy until the final area where you fight Atlas. This method can be found on easily on the internet. I decided to make a thorough guide in my own words because some on here seem brief. You can also get "Seriously Good at This". Make sure you read the IMPORTANT section and do the following:

1. Start a game on Easy, and play through (you can go for any achievements you want while you do) until you get to the very end of Proving Grounds (The second last area). You will be a Big Daddy and you will be with a Little Sister. When she climbs in the hole and give you her weapon to steal ADAM, you are at the end of the game.

2. Press Start and go to Options. At the very bottom disable Vita-Chambers (it would be wise to disable them in the very beginning of the game; read the IMPORTANT section for more information).

3. Go into the Elevator and you will Ascend. You will then be in a new area "Fontaine". This is where the Boss is. Fight him normally, draining his ADAM. You have to drain his ADAM four times.

3. When you go to click "A" to drain his last bar of ADAM (the 4th time) after you click "A", wait half a second and then click Start. Go to Options and turn the difficulty to Hard.

4. Now this is VERY important. When you turn it to hard, click START! Do not click B to return. Make sure you click Start.

5. After a few seconds you will go into a cut scene. At one point in the Cut-scene you should get the achievement and you even unlock the achievement for beating it on the hardest difficulty if you haven't yet.

6. Wait for the whole cut scene to finish. If you don't have the achievement, load your game up from the last auto save and repeat steps 1-5. You will be coming out of the Elevator.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you do the following because if you don't you MAY not get the achievement.

1. Don't Die in the game. This should be easy on Easy. Unless you disabled Vita-Chambers from the very beginning, you should be able to die and still get the achievement. But to be safe, try not to die.

2. Make sure you have the DLC and you are connected to xbox live (you need the update).

3. Make sure you Disable Vita-Chambers before going up the elevator. (Even the smartest people make mistakes)

4. Make sure you change the difficulty to "Hard" when you are Draining his last ADAM bar.

5. Make sure you press the START button after changing the difficulty. Do NOT press "B".

Credit goes to many people throughout the internet who have confirmed this, friends, and myself as well!

Enjoy the easy achievements!

Further to the other tips, during the final battle if you have a full 200 of electric gel that will take 2 of his lives regardles of his element then 6 heat seekers is enough to send him home in a box, just done that killed him in a couple of mins no bother, didn't take on that many Big Daddys throughout the game as it was a speed run, went into final battle with a couple of upgrades for each tonic, health and eve and 1 plasmid, pretty much all the big daddy fights were done by using hypnotise and setting one on another, ignored first few in game until had better weapons, save often and heal all the time, this really is pretty easy to beat on hard took maybe 6 hours take it steady and ignore anything off main goals

As tipped in other solutions, you can also boost this achievement with playing game in Easy and changing at very end to Hard. However, I got this doing ending slightly differently than in those solutions:
Actually I had to press Start BEFORE draining Fontaine/Atlas last fourth time. Tried six times hitting Start after A, but apparently didn't find the correct delay. As doing it before, unlocked this achievement on first try (along with "Seriously Good At This").

As to Vita-chambers, you don't have to turn them off. Just don't use them. If you happen to die, do not select "Continue" from menu. Reload your previous save. Still, turning Vita-chambers off ensures that no unintended accidents happen.

This one looks harder than it actually is: you can actually turn the "disable vita chambers" option on at ANY point of the game. I activated it somewhere in olympus heights and still got the achievement. Also i played the whole game on easy and still got it by changing the difficulty to hard when i was using the last injection on Atlas. For making this all possible just press start immediately after pressing the A button for draining the ADAM, go to, options, change settings to hard and save the changes by pressing START. Last thing which will void the achievement: you are not allowed to die for the whole playthrough (but its easy difficulty so that wont be too hard). Hope that is helpful.

All the solutions for this achievement are great and awesome, but this is a guide that's specific for people who can't get the achievement due to glitches or just not setting it up right.

1. Download the "Ryan Industries Plasmids and Gene Tonics" DLC for Bioshock.

2. Play Bioshock and load a saved game called "Fontaine" if you have one.

3. Press start and go to options. Check for DISABLE VITA-CHAMBERS and turn that on.

4. Watch lX CaptHowdy Xl's video and follow the instructions.

5. If that doesn't work, read LordKarloff's guide and follow the instructions.

6. If that doesn't work, I recommend you start a new playthrough on easy.

7. When you reach the Atlas fight, do steps 4 or 5.

8. Achievement pops after the little sister hands the key to you.

If your having issues still then MAKE SURE TO CHECK FOR THE DISABLE VITA-CHAMBERS OPTION AND HAVE IT BE ON. If it's not there, then delete the DLC on the hard-drive, download the DLC again with another gamertag, and start a new playthrough on hard for that gamertag. You'll get a introduction screen for the new tonics. After that, sign out and sign in with the original gamertag. That should work. Also, if you downloaded the DLC during a playthrough that you were working on, then the achievement will be glitched. I had this problem, so I just started a new playthrough on easy and I got the achievement!!!

FACTS:
1.This achievement requires the free DLC -"RYAN....PLASMIDS...... which is not available in all regions.(I'm in INDIA") You need another account of another region if it's not available in your region.

2.With the DLC you have the DISABLE VITA CHAMBERS option in the OPTIONS menu, you have to turn this on.

3.I completed the game on HARD without using VITA CHAMBERS without the DLC, but I didn't get the achievement. So I downloaded the FREE DLC, turned the DISABLE VITA CHAMBERS option ON and loaded the FONTAINE savefile and the achievement popped when the little sister hands over the key(RAPTURE KEY).

TO ALL PEOPLE WITH THE GLITCH WHERE THE VITA CHAMBERS OPTION WON'T SHOW:
I deleted my chache but i still did not had the option appeared until i also deleted the ryan plasmids dlc AND the patch
Only that gave me the option.
I still don't got the achievements since i did not try but i will right now.

*EDIT*
I have done a little more research and found out that the reason this glitch occures is because you probably have old pre-patch savegames, these are compatible with the patch BUT sometimes there are some mistakes, like the dialogue is not right or you don't see the vita chambers option.
So delete everything even your saves to fix it.

I went to Bioshock.com and found this and it worked for me !! Xbox 360

If the option to disable the "Vita-Chambers" is missing and you are trying to get the "Brass Balls" achievement, create a Silver account, delete the required DLC off of your 360, redownload the DLC, and then play with the user account you wish with the option now being available.
this is copied direct from Bioshock.com !!! I will leave a link as well !!! http://forums.2kgames.com/showthread.php?110002-Known-Biosho....

Yeh yeh yeh......follow the above......BUT........

I did this twice following the above and NO achievement.
Then I did it agin on my second xbox, log in second account and download DLC. Play through for a bit. Then main account logged in and started on EASY...almost finished then switched to HARD....ONLY CHANGED DIFFICULTY ONCE....did not start on HARD...Started on EASY, played through amd changed as stated above, after last drain.

I think it was cause I statred both prevoius play throughts on HARD and the changed to EASY early on and then changed back to HARD at the end.

Only one change and achievement unlocked ! !

If your having no luck...take this into consideration . .. . . . .

( not sure...but how it happened for me ! ! )

Look for this in your friend feed:

YOUR GAMER TAG started the Title Update DLC in BioShock

I saw this when I finally got mine running correctly. In order: Download Ryan Industries Plasmids and Gene Tonics DLC, clear your cache, start Bioshock with the obligatory update, restart your X360 console, start Bioshock again, and start a new game. I hope this helps.

As of August 2013 CaptinHowdys Method still works. I got it 1st try. I had no problems with the glitch at all.

I had no previous save files and i had to re download the dlc and except the update so i think that is why i did not get the glitch. Just remember that once you are in the water after the plane crash at the start,Hit start and put the disable vita chambers option to ON and hit start again so it saves. Its the very last option in the options menu

This achievement is really not hard to get at all. If you enjoy the game as much as I did, you will get a lot of satisfaction from doing it legitimately.

Some tips:

- SAVE OFTEN. Before big fights and after traversing large distances. A good reminder is to, at minimum, save whenever you see a Vita Chamber.

- Skip the Big Daddies until you have the Grenade Launcher and/or Crossbow. You can always back track to get that sweet Adam.

- Search everything. This will get you a good amount of Cash, Health Kits and EVE Hypo to get through the game. Visit the Circus of Value to stock up whenever you are flush with cash. Get the Scrounger tonic to make searches even better.

- Use the Enrage Plasmid a lot. Splicers are often in pairs and will kill each other while you sit back and relax. One will come out of the fight with little health and you can just pop him/her quickly.

- Use Security Bullseye on Big Daddies. Insanely effective. Just make sure they are walking in the path of a Security Camera or an active Security Bot and basically all of the work of killing a Big Daddy is done for you!

- Hone your skills with the Crossbow. It does a lot of damage in the neck/head area and will kill most splicers with one bow.

- Upgrade your preferred weapons at Power to The People machines. Guides are everywhere online for their locations.

- Beating "Final Boss" (spoiler safe) is super easy as well if you are stocked up with the right stuff. Look up a guide on YT when you get there.

Some people think that this achievement is really hard, but the reality is that it's actually very easy. In order to obtain this achievement you must start a new file and go to the Pause Menu. Select "Options" and turn ON "Disable Vita-Chambers." If you do not do this and die you will HAVE to start the game all over again, even if you did have a previous save. Spawning in a chamber will corrupt the achievement for all saves.

Tips:

1. Save every time you accomplish a new objective or finish a fight, and before all bosses.

2. Skip as many splicers as possible. Only kill objective-completing splicers or ones that are attacking you to make things go faster.

3. Save as much ammo as you can and use the wrench as much as you can. Get the Wrench Jockey tonics to boost up your strength.

4. Don't wait to use first-aid. Use it right after fights, even if you still have half-health left. Going into a battle without full health is risky as anything may happen. It's possible to die before you can regenerate your health.

5. Check all crates, trash cans, dead splicers, etc for extra first-aid and eve items.

6. Get this achievement on a separate run-through than the other ones. Trying to go out of your way to get all Diaries, Tonics, etc. will kill you.

Defeating ATLAS

This might be tough for some people who haven't beaten the game on hard beforehand, so read carefully.

When you get to Atlas (the final boss of the game) you need:

  • Full ammo for the crossbow (Steel [regular], Fire, and Trap [the electric trip wires]).
  • Full eve
  • Full first-aid packs
  • All Blizzard Plasmids
  • Anything else is not needed for this fight, but might come in handy.

When you first start out you need to run up to him and grab ADAM from him for the battle to start. When he comes down, he will start out as a fire element. Hit him with your Blizzard plasmid and shoot at him with your Steel bolts. Repeat this until he goes back on his restraining table.

Go grab more ADAM from him and he will come back down as the ice element. Hit him with your inferno plasmid, if you have it, and shoot at him with your fire crossbow. Repeat this until he goes back up.

Go grab more ADAM and he will come back down for a third and final time. He will be a multi-element so any plasmid and crossbow shots will work. This time when he is down you will also have a couple of splicers who will come down and try to attack you. Don't worry about them because the AI on these are really bad and will rarely hit you, just focus on Atlas. Keep shooting your crossbows and he will eventually go down. Achievement Unlocked.

***Thanks to xLCDx for the addition***

Starting from the Main Menu, select Options and then Gameplay Options. Now switch Disable Vita-Chambers to ‘On.' This is not required but it ensures that you do not make a mistake throughout your playthrough. This playthrough should be your first and is detailed in Step One of the Abbreviated Walkthrough. Once you choose to start the game, ensure that you select the Hard difficulty setting.

Disabling Vita-Chambers effectively turns off the ability to respawn without penalty. Consequently, that means that if you die you will be loading from your last manual or auto-save. It's up to you on how much you want to abuse the manual save system but it's highly recommended that you save as often as you can. It's not uncommon to accidently agro a Big Daddy and die quickly. If you did not save recently, you will be replaying large portions of the game.

During this playthrough you are going to be Rescuing all Little Sisters, collecting all Tonics, and upgrading all weapons so your character will be as powerful as possible by the end. Since you will be visiting nearly every nook and cranny of Rapture while collecting everything, you will also be scavenging a lot and should have plenty of supplies most of the time. I have always found the game to become increasingly easy as you upgrade your character and weapons. Please refer to the “Seriously Good At This” achievement for additional tips that can be used during this playthrough.

In order to play the game on easy and still get this achievement, please refer to the exploit that I have detailed in Step Four of the Abbreviated Walkthrough. Even when playing on easy and using the exploit method, you still must disable or not use the Vita-Chambers in order to get this achievement.
