How to unlock the Seriously Good At This achievement in BioShock - Definitive Guide

You can still boost this and Brass Balls if you like. Play through on easy (with Vitachambers off if you're also going for Brass Balls)(Brass Balls achievement is included in free DLC). Anyhoo, play on easy, and when you're on the last boss, AS SOON as you press A to take his ADAM the *final/fourth* time, press start and change the difficulty to hard, then press start to exit and watch the ending. Both should pop. You can keep loading the boss save if you screw this up somehow.

So let me get this straight - you can play through on easy and simply change the difficulty at the last second and it will unlock hard? The opposite to Mass Effect where it must be on a certain difficulty the entire course of the game?

Yes. If you want brass balls, you still have to turn of vita-chambers. Also, some people have reported brass balls *not* working in this fashion, while for others it works fine. Seriously Good At This *will* work for sure.

I think I may have a save at the boss fight so I'll take a try at this for Brass Balls.

Got the hard one legit, wasn't all that hard either, I don't see how people have any issues with it.

This solution is 100% legit. It took me a few tries, but it turned out I was actually pausing and switching to hard too quickly after pressing A to get Adam from Atlas the final time.

does this still work? i tried it twice and it didn't work. I started the game on hard and was halfway through when i found out about turning off the chambers for the brass balls achievement, so i figured I'd have to do it on hard all over again and i might as well switch it to easy so i can get every other achievement easily. Could my switching from hard to easy halfway through make me unable to do this glitch?

Just did this still works like a charm. For those people having trouble still press start when the ADAM syringe comes on the screen. If done correctly the scene with the little sisters stabbing him should be really glitchy (was for me when mine popped).

does this still work? i have replayed fontaine like 6 times trying to time it differently when i switch to hard, with no luck. was i supposed to have STARTED the game on hard, immediately switched to easy, then switched back to hard at the end? i simply started on easy...i hope i don't have to replay the whole game again...

Ok well for those wondering, the best thing would be to redo a run in easy, having vita chambers turned off (on on, haha), and go through the game as quickly as possible. It took me 4h15 from "new game" to "achievement unlocked", I rushed and was low on ammo at some time but all in all, as long as you have 80 electric gel for the boss, it's gonna be easy.

Can we verify that this still works and hasnt been patched yet? I loaded an easy run through today at the very last level. I got all the way to the 4th collection and paused and changed it to hard and hit START to confirm it. I beat him and no achievement. I tried it 4 times with no luck. I have to go back and play with vita chambers off anyway, but I dont want to do the entire thing on easy and try this if its been patched and wont work and Im just wasting my time.

Still works as of 01.13.13. I played through on Medium and did not disable Vita Chambers. I did make sure that if I died, I reloaded a save rather than using a Vita Chamber. I have the DLC installed and played through the entire game while connected to Live. I tried the first time with no success. I had switched difficulties and pressed B. After reading comments on here, I switched difficulties and pressed Start instead. It worked that way. I also switched the difficulty immediately after I hit the A button to do the final drain, just like wooberhead said. Both Brass Balls and Seriously Good At This popped (2 for 140G) just after the scene where Fontaine gets mauled by Little Sisters, but before the Epilogue.

I think it did, but it's been a while. You can always save before you switch, then set that save aside in case it doesn't work. Or keep truckin' on hard. You already made it half way.

Worked like a charm 4/12/14. The cut screen sort of glitched out and made the successful hack sound, but the 2 for 140 achievement popped up nonetheless. I wasn't real picky about when to hit start just as long as it's after you press A the last time.

Works as of 12/05/2014. Only problem for me was remembering to hit "START" instead of "B". I not only had to replay the entire game, thinking I died somewhere and forgot about it, but I replayed the Atlas fight over nine times. Seriously thought of taping off the "B" button. Achievement(s) received fading in from black as the little sister attempts to hand Jack the key to the city.

Note that if you press cn_B instead of cn_start you DO NOT have to play the whole game again, just re-load your last save (or auto save) and play through the final fight again, then on the final cn_A to drain him press cn_start, change the difficulty to Hard & press cn_start again - pressing cn_B & Resume will forfeit the achievement, so you just have to complete the fight again

I'd recommend doing the fight on Easy as you only get 1 bot & no splicers attacking you after the second drain - I had to do this multiple times as I kept on doing the wrong sequence, but once I got it right, it was all good

It's just a pity that I left vita chambers on & didn't download the DLC until RIGHT near the end

Any reason why this isn't working for me? I've tried multiple times (over 20) using various different guides telling me exactly when to switch to hard and press start. Doesn't work.

Is it because I started on medium and switched to easy? I'm not spending an entire day playing through this a third time just to have it not work for me again.

Started game on easy, blew through it in a couple days, switched from easy to hard by pressing left one time in the options menu during the final draining of Fontaine's adam, pressed start to back out of menu. Ehh,ok shock well then I'm gonna go out on limb & say that as so many others (myself incl.) you did something wrong ... there's no game that only has some achievements available through BC so either you can get them all or none but as I said many have had problems getting it including me so are you sure you did as they say 300 times in the comments ... press cn_start NOT cn_B ... only trying to help, I finished this game way back & only to be kind I take the time to answer questions, but give me 1 reason that it shouldn't work on BC when it works on the remastered edition & the BC is the exact same you just play it on another console, I could understand if the remastered edition didn't work but again just trying to help... guess that's makes it my fault that it doesn't work so yeah ... you're welcome roll

Can confirm this still works 12 Nov 2022. The first few times I tried no luck, but after reinstalling the game and dlc both this and Brass Balls popped for 140G. Works with Ultimate Rapture update and I played on XB1 with the 360 disc version. The best thing I can advise is you have to time the pause and difficultly switch just right. The fourth time you press A to take his ADAM pause right when he hits you and switch difficultly. Be sure to press start to confirm the change. Then when you resume the game the cheevos both popped when he hit the floor in the cut scene. Good luck!

works. no need to uninstall any title updates or dlc or anything like that.

I played on medium, then lowered difficulty to hard before the final boss. after hitting A to drain his adam for the fourth and final time I hit the pause button, just before the needle went in. I then changed the difficulty to Hard with the left joystick and pressed Start to return to the game. The achievement popped just as the cinematic switches from game engine to the pre rendered video (for one of the morality specific endings).

Hope that helps.

Still works as of 18 March 2015 & while I'm greatful that wooberhead put up this solution, I also have to say thanks to UltraAmbiguous (2 comments above) for mentioning the problem with pressing cn_B instead of cn_start Start because for some reason that little difference makes the achievements not pop shock
I tried several times & was getting rather nervous that I had to do it all over again, luckily I took a look at the comments before doing so,mostly to see if it had been patched, just to find out that it was a small thing as the wrong button, lol facepalm
Any way too clearify if others have the same problem - Press Start - Change Difficulty to Hard - & here's the important part DO NOT PRESS cn_B to go back to the game instead make sure you press cn_start Start!
Good Luck smile

Seriously Good At This - 40
Complete the game on the hardest difficulty setting.

*Spoilers*

This achievement is really easy. You can play on the difficulty Easy until the final area where you fight Atlas. This method can be found on easily on the internet. I see there are 2 Guides for it here, but they aren't very detailed so I will write one in my own words. You can also get "Brass Balls" but you have to have the DLC. Make sure you read the IMPORTANT section (If going for "Brass Balls") and do the following:

1. Start a game on Easy, and play through (you can go for any achievements you want while you do) until you get to the very end of Proving Grounds (The second last area). You will be a Big Daddy and you will be with a Little Sister. When she climbs in the hole and give you her weapon to steal ADAM, you are at the end of the game.

Note: Do not switch the difficulty at any other time in the story, because it may affect you not getting the achievement. Read the comments below for more information.

2. This is only if you are going for "Brass Balls". Press Start and go to Options. At the very bottom disable Vita-Chambers (it would be wise to disable them in the very beginning of the game; read the IMPORTANT section for more information).

3. Go into the Elevator and you will Ascend. You will then be in a new area "Fontaine". This is where the Boss is. Fight him normally, draining his ADAM. You have to drain his ADAM four times.

3. When you go to click "A" to drain his last bar of ADAM (the 4th time) after you click "A", wait half a second and then click Start. Go to Options and turn the difficulty to Hard.

4. Now this is VERY important. When you turn it to hard, click START! Do not click B to return. Make sure you click Start.

5. After a few seconds you will go into a cut scene. At one point in the Cut-scene you should get the achievement. If you are going for Brass Balls that achievement should unlock too.

6. Wait for the whole cut scene to finish. If you don't have the achievement, load your game up from the last auto save and repeat steps 1-5. You will be coming out of the Elevator.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you do the following because if you don't you MAY not get the achievement "Brass Balls".

1. Don't Die in the game. This should be easy on Easy. Unless you disabled Vita-Chambers from the very beginning, you should be able to die and still get the achievement. But to be safe, try not to die.

2. Make sure you have the DLC and you are connected to xbox live (you need the update).

3. Make sure you Disable Vita-Chambers before going up the elevator. (Even the smartest people make mistakes)

4. Make sure you change the difficulty to "Hard" when you are Draining his last ADAM bar.

5. Make sure you press the START button after changing the difficulty. Do NOT press "B".

Credit goes to many people throughout the internet who have confirmed this, friends, and myself as well!

Enjoy the easy achievements!

You are right, it does still work. What happened to me is my old xbox broke so I bought a new one and I think with the hard drive transfer the file must have gotten corrupted. I started a new game and blew through it in about 5 hours and got both achvs. "Seriously Good At This" and "Brass Balls". So...Thx!

Does this still work? I followed the steps to a T and didn't get it. I haven't played Bioshock in a couple years but came back to get the achievements. I downloaded the dlc and loaded up Fontaine. Maybe it's because I haven't played with the dlc from the beginning so it doesn't work? That's my only guess. I would hate to play through on easy again though just to have it not work still.

Update: Just got this. I can confirm that it works on Medium. However, make sure you don't change the difficulty. I tried switching from Medium to Easy first and didn't get it.

It worked. The key is very much on not one death. I needed to do a second playthrough anyway for missed collectables but with no deaths, this will work.

And I kept well away from any vita chamber when passing them just to be sure,

wow, thank you for the detail about pressing start to confirm the difficulty! It's been a decade since I played the 360 version (and since I tried this trick), I just loaded up my fontaine save and was able to do this. Bonus, I apparently hadn't used any vita chambers either, so I got that too!

When I started my playthrough on easy I didn't have the option to disable the chambers. I did a search and found a solution, you might want to add if you're going for the Brass Balls achievement as well. I take no credit for finding this fix, just passing the information along.

How to fix "Disable Vita Chamber" Option
1. Create a new or use existing account that you haven't played BioShock on.
2. Go to marketplace and download the DLC.
3. Go back to the game on the main account and the option is going to be there.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand you done!

Although some consider this to be hard it is actually an easy achievement considering you do have infinite lives. The only difficult part is the final boss as you will not respawn.

The reason this achievement is easier than it sounds is because of the vita-chambers. As long as you have vita-chambers turned on you will come back to life close to where you died. The only place you will not respawn is while fighting the final boss, which will prove to be a challenging fight.

I suggest starting the game on hard and playing through. If you feel you're up to it I would also suggest going for as many achievements as possible, on my playthrough I got 49 of 51 achievements, not including historian or Brass Balls.

So start it up on hard, and don't be afraid to die. Infinite lives makes a seemingly hard achievement all that much easier.

Although like I said, the final boss is quite a challenge as you will not revive, so here are some tips:

1) Make sure to have as much ammo and eve/health items as you can carry.

2) Don't hesitate to heal. If you have to die, at least go out fighting with no more medkits knowing you gave it your all.

3) Use the crossbow. It does massive damage and is very accurate (reload time is a bit long, but the damage is worth it.)

4) Learn the boss's patterns. Once you do you will be able to defend against them.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER (I think)

5) Do NOT wait to drain his adam, he will come back down and start attacking again meaning you have to run through the sequence again. (I made this mistake and learned this first hand)

EDIT

6) Use the Electric gel on the first 2 sequences as it will make short work of the boss in these sections.

Good solution, you;re absolutely right on the vita chambers. Unfortunately i'm going to attempt to get this and brass balls at the same time, so no vitachambers for me... :)

Try using the chemical thrower gun...

use the electric gel ammo type for it...

not only does it stop in place but it does a huge amount of damage to him... just make sure not to get killed by his security bot's and splicer's that appear :D

contrary to what you say about the final boss being hard, hes actually not if you load up on electric gel and ammo for the grenade launcher. you can get rid of him in no time for the first two go arounds by using electric gel easily. then the 3rd time is a bit harder but youll have 9 health packs and all your other ammo.

So is this one glitched? Or did people make mistakes?

@Solario32 You must start the game at the very beginning on hard, and play through without ever changing it, even accidentally in order to get this

Hey Guys, i need help !
I started Bioshock on HARD, with the Disable Vita Chambers option set to "ON" ( I wanted Brass Balls at the same time ) I just played through the Story as usual, WITHOUT changing the Difficulty. I face the Endboss, i kill him, and guess what...
NO ACHIEVEMENT AT ALL ! I should have gotten Seriously Good At This, but i didnt, and i should have gotten Brass Balls for NOT using a Vita-Chamber ! ( I died like 20 times, but when i did i was kicked back to the menu, so i didnt use a Vita-Chamber ! )
I already tried re-downloading the DLC and started a new Campaign, i did... Still nothing.

I completed Bioshock on Hard 2 times now without dying, still no Achievement... Is this one glitched ?

If you have a solution, please tell me, i want the Achievement so bad :(

Thanks

Just finished this achievement and had a few bits to add.

1)Like Quarantine said, learn to use the crossbow throughout the game, with the weapons upgrade the bolts can be retrieved from the bodies. Head shots to most splicers are one shot kills.

2)With the dlc there is an Eve tonic that lowers the Eve cost to plasmids. Also, search everywhere and sometimes just blindly shoot Telekenesis around, you might get lucky.

Huge SPOILER:
3)Photograph the Spider Splicers as soon as possible, their fnal level bonus makes looting them worthwhile.

Endgame FONTAINE
During Proving Ground collect all the ammo and money you can, remember, the Little Sisters are expendable, the game doesn't end when you lose a set amount (I lost a few). After Proving Ground you will have an opportunity to buy or make what you need and you can always leave and come back until you get on the elevator. Once on his platform there is a Gene machine far around to the right, you'll need this.

Now for Fontaine, before you stick him with the Adam needle use the Gene kiosk, I found Electro Ball, Incinerate, Winter Blast, and Sonic Boom (from the dlc), helped.

Fontaine changes form after every syphon, 1st he's fire (use ice), then he's ice (guess where this is going?). Here's were Sonic Boom helped, After the first go around he'll bring in a bot, then some splicers and the Boom clears them away for a little.

Ok, conventional weapons: I set up a line of proxy mines, then used granades to take one "life". Next, I unloaded with the flame thrower. Also, what I found extremely usefull was antipersonnel machine gun rounds and armor piercing machine gun rounds (try to stay away from the pistol, loading time vs overall damage is bad).

The glitch is
Play the game on any difficulty and just before you have to drain the ADAM for the last time press start and change difficulty to hard then press start to return to the game (do not press B)

then drain the ADAM
this will unlock the cheevos for hard mode and brass balls(if you did not use a vita chamber that is)

they will unlock after you awake during the last cutscene so dont freak out if they dont pop instantly

Just to let you know that Brass Balls and Seriously Good At This might be glitched for some regardless of what you do.

I went back and tried the change difficulty trick and it didn't work.
So i deleted everything including the game and reinstalled then downloaded the dlc and update and started on easy.
Completed the game then tried the trick again and nothing.

I then deleted everything again and played through on hard
Started on hard and had the vitachambers turned off plus I saved all the little and never entered the options menu again and nothing.
I have beaten fontain multiple times and nothing so for some people these two achievements are impossible to get.

You should start the game on Hard, seeing as you have unlimited lives. When you die, you are reborn at a Vita-Chamber and the game stays exactly how you left it, meaning every enemy will have the same amount of health if you were in a battle. You can essentially run at a Big Daddy and melee it until it kills you, then get reborn and return and do the same. It is impossible to get a "Game Over" so to speak, so this difficulty is really not hard at all.

This achievement is earned for completing the game on the Survivor difficulty setting. For BioShock veterans of the Xbox 360, this will be new to you since this difficulty was originally unique to the PlayStation 3 version of the game. This remastered version of the game now includes a New Game+ feature that is unlocked after completing the game on any difficulty. For this playthrough, make sure that you select New Game+ as well as Survivor difficulty. All of your data like Weapon Upgrades, Inventory, Research, etc. should now carry over, making the beginning of the game a lot less frustrating. All of these items should unlock once you reach the Medical Pavilion.

There are two different ways to complete this achievement: beating the game from start to finish on Survivor difficulty or by using the exploit described in Step Four of the Abbreviated Walkthrough. For the purposes of this guide, I will be giving tips for players that wish to playthrough the entire game on Survivor difficulty.

Survivor difficulty is not much different from Hard, but can be a little bit of a slog. If you are following the Abbreviated Walkthrough of this guide, this will be Step Two. Since you should have unlocked all other campaign achievements during Step One, you should now have a lot more freedom to play the way you want during this playthrough. You do not need to force yourself to take on every Big Daddy in the game in order to earn ADAM from the Little Sisters. You should only rescue as many Little Sisters as you think you need in order to upgrade and purchase Plasmids and Tonics. If you only use a couple of Plasmids, then don’t worry about purchasing additional Plasmids or Plasmid slots since that would be a waste of time and ADAM. There is no point in using valuable resources fighting Big Daddies if you don’t need the ADAM.

It is still highly recommended to complete all of the research using the Research Camera (if you hadn't already during your first playthrough). Through research, every enemy will eventually grant you a couple of damage increase bonuses. These are critical to playing the game on Survivor difficulty and will make the later levels of the game more tolerable.

Due to ammo being in short supply, it's also recommended that you visit all of the Power to the People weapon upgrade stations (if you didn't during your first playthrough). It may seem like a little bit of overkill, but you never know when ammo will be in short supply and you may need to use a weapon that you normally don’t. I personally used the Machine Gun, Crossbow, Chemical Thrower, and RPG (all fully upgraded). A fully upgraded Chemical Thrower with full ammo can make the final boss fight a cakewalk. The Electric Gel freezes him in place and does a pretty fair amount of damage.

I think the most important thing that I recommend for your Survivor playthrough is to research the Spider Splicer as much as possible and as soon as possible. The second level of research for the Spider Splicer grants the Natural Camouflage Tonic. This Tonic grants you invisibility when standing still. Enemies will completely ignore you when you are invisible.

Scavenge. Scavenge. Scavenge. The more cash and supplies you have, the easier this playthrough becomes. It's always advised to have as many Health Kits and EVE Hypos in reserve as possible.

Use the Vita-Chambers. Since you already beat the game on Hard without using Vita-Chambers in Step One of this walkthrough, you are free to use this respawn system. Every time you die, you will respawn in the nearest chamber and any damage that you inflicted on enemies will carry over. However, since respawning will cost you some dollars and some EVE, it may still be better to save often and simply reload a save.
