How to unlock the Fishing Guru achievement in Black Desert - Definitive Guide
Now that I have unlocked the achievement, it took me probably 350 hours to get. 30-50 of active fishing and gathering equipment and messing around, and then probably 300 hours of passive fishing. Originally, if I was more efficient in the beginning, maybe I could have done it in 300 hours total. And with the new update, maybe I could have gotten it down to 200-250 if I just dumped all the fish. So, those are my estimates.
I want to write a solution here to potentially include information and hopefully update it as it comes along.
I'll probably update this more as I go, as this is a first draft.
TL:DR
- Get an upgraded Balenos Fishing Rod for AFK Fishing
- After acquiring a fishing boat, Hotspot fish in the seas or AFK fish in Banto/Zenato sea's.
- Get as high of a level of the Silver Embroidered Fisher's Clothes for extra XP.
- Don't waste your XP boosts until you're ready to potentially Active fish.
- http://www.somethinglovely.net/bdo/ shows a map of sea regions and hotspots.
- Try to increase your inventory size as much as possible.
- If you don't care about the coin from selling at Traders, the new update lets you automatically drop fish as you hit certain levels to increase the length of auto fishing before filling inventories.
- There are many PC fishing guides out there, you will just have to adapt some information as the PC/XBOX version are different.
To start, the Xbox version is behind from the PC version. PC has the Great Oceans, which offer Sailing and additional fishing features, including the Epheria Sailboat. As of now, I don't know when that is coming to consoles.
But for now, we have the coastal seas and rivers. To start out, through Beginner and Apprentice, the Old Rod or Sturdy Rod you can buy or get through the Central Market should be fine.
Eventually, towards the end of Apprentice and if you're serious about leveling fishing, I recommend going for some of the special rods, mainly the Balenos rod as it reduces Auto-Fishing time.
River fishing can be done decently, though a lot of junk that you can filter out. Look for Abundant fishing locations, and the ponds around Glish are nice and usually have decent drop tables.
Auto-fishing is done by just casting the rod and let it sit. You will catch fish on average and at base stats around 1 every 3 minutes. This can improve with gear and fishing poles (like the Balenos Rod, and more so if it is enchanted to a higher level)
So on Xbox, you can auto-fish by setting it to not turn off at night in your settings and try to average it out to see when your inventory fills up. Auto-fishing received an update recently, and as long as you're Professional 1 you can dump up to blue rarity fish. So if you have a small inventory it will allow for you to auto fish for longer periods.
Inventory is important as well, less so now if you auto-fish and plan to dump the fish. If you go into 'Quests' and tab to 'Suggestions' there is a category for Inventory Expansion that will offer quests to increase your inventory to catch more fish. I suggest doing these earlier so you gain more XP over time.
You can also gain consumables that can be used to increase Life XP earned, to help boost that. I suggest saving these for when you have the X-day Value Packs, or like the Premium Pass in game items that give you XP boosts and increased storage space for the certain amount of time.
Clothing also helps XP gain and fishing level. Get you some Silver Embroidered Fisher's clothes, and at a higher enchantment level if possible. They can get a bit pricey though on the Central Market, but for every level you get an extra 5% to fishing xp earned and up to +2 fishing ability..
Fishing levels reduce your cast to bite time. This is a variable that fluctuates with your fishing level, fishing ability, and the place you are fishing at.
But maxing it at +5 is suggested. This is easily accomplished by a +2 Fisher's Clothes and a Life Skilling guild that has +3 fishing in it.
But where should you fish?
Depends. Your best chance is out at sea. Active fish at hotspots that have seagulls flying around them for guaranteed gold fish. Or fish at certain seas for high blue drop rate tables and low cast to bite times (such as Banto sea or Zenato Sea). You can AFK fish here and earn a full inventory relatively quickly that is mostly blues.
But you have to get out at sea first. At this point, you're best bet is to hold out for being able to buy a Fishing Boat license off of the CM. They have a durability that will eventually reach 0, but for as much time as I have been fishing at sea, I'm barely at half durability on the boat.
The penguin is a nice bonus but hard to buy off the CM. I've been on wait for 2 months now and still haven't gotten a seller for it. So if you want to spend some real money for fishing, maybe invest in the Pearl Shop on one, or the fishing outfit you can buy in there, but it can be pricey.
Another item is the Triple Float Rod that is suggested for use in Hotspots. It allows you to have the chance of catching multiple fish at once. But it can't be repaired and is expensive, so use it wisely. If you do the "Hold A to Cast" and spend additional Energy, it increases your chance of catching more fish at once.

Has a great map that shows the sea regions and the available fish and hotspots. Again north of Velia, by the Pirates, at the Sea of Banto and Zenato Sea are good fishing spots for good xp/inventory.

I have done all the game in 200 hours and for leveling my fishing level. I only use a outfit and a good fishing rod and never used consumables.
My spot was in the first big city (I forgot thr name) and I was farming the bottle. Near the storage near the ocean, there is path and I just follow it until I am on rock after all the player.
With 5 (if i remember correctly) bottle, you can exchange for a lot of Xp and contribution point (got like 200 contribution point before reaching 51). The PNJ is a animal near the storage again (forgot his name). I always get like 20~25 bottle after 7 hours afk and generally, that was always enough to get at least 1~2 level at level 40.

There's an event right now that gives you a Coelacanth, a yellow fish worth 500k, every other catch or so - regardless of fishing mastery. Skips you straight to the highest EXP value catching at any mastery, no need for 1000+ mastery in hard-to-reach places for consistent high-value catches. And Coelacanth stack, and weigh nothing, so you don't need to go hard on buying inventory slots + max weight stuff. With a Balenos fishing rod you only need about 60 inventory slots for your rod to break/have it be what stops your AFK, since half the fish you catch only take up 1 inventory spot. They're in city safe zones, right next to fish trader/normal trader/blacksmith. Combos into much, much faster gains, with maybe 2 minutes of maintenance till you can leave it AFK again.
It's available at 5 different spots, safe non-combat zones with some right at the start of the game. If you haven't played in a while and go on the returning player server for the 100% life exp boost (for pre-Artisan 1 and below leveling) it goes even faster. Am at Artisan 3 (level 43) after about 36 hours of AFK fishing. If reading this and interested in this achievement would highly recommend setting this up while sleeping.

this is pretty much a long one but its good in the way you can AFK it if you really want
(DISCLAIMER) i do not own this achievement but im pretty sure this is the best way to do it with little to no effort if there is anything better please mention in the comments i would love to know
anyways back to it i think the best thing to do this is to AFK while you are sleeping
if you cast your first throw and you just leave it it will auto fist for you
i would recommend you use a (balenos fishing rod) as its pretty easy to get from the central market and it has the biggest durability so it will last longer
your only issue will be inventory space.
i hope this helps happy hunting
(edit) please look at some of the comments below as they are pretty helpful

The game has added accessories that increase Life EXP gained, which increases EXP for all Life Skills and Fishing is one of them. There are 3 grades, the blue grade can be bought from Material Vendors in any city for 10M each, which isn't that much in this game's economy.
Here's a link to someone else's guide about them:
https://grumpygreen.cricket/bdo-loggia-life-mastery-gear/
There are also new fisher's clothes, but they increase Mastery level, not EXP gained, so an enhanced Silver Embroidered Fisher's Clothes is still the way to go.
the new manos fisher's clothes:

the silver embroidered fisher's clothes:
https://bddatabase.net/us/item/14020/
Hit the plus at the topright of the itembox to see the different enhancement levels.
With these new accessories I was finally able to get this achievement. It felt like they made a huge difference!
As a side note: This game should be played on a Series X, playing it on a One is agony.

I do not own this achievement yet, but i want to add a suggestion that was not mentioned by the other guys.
Following their guides, I'm reaching faster for the Fishing Guru, however I would like to add a tip I've found pretty useful.
Open the quest menu, go to "Suggested" and look for "[Advancement] Fishing Guru". This set of quests is found at the very end, together with the ones releated to the other Life Skills.
Completing these quests will grant you a lot more exp for your Life Skill and they're not hard to be completed. Moreover, this kind of tasks are always realted to the Skill, so for example you can complete them while fishing, without wasting time, but maximizing the gain.
Finally, if you have the value pack active, you are granted a +16 inventory slots which are very useful for AFK fishing.

To add to this solutuion and comments, I also use the elixers if i am manually fishing as they only last 5 minutes. (Elixer of Time [Life Exp +10%] and Fisher's [Elixer Fishing +2]).
I also use any scrolls i might have for Life EXP % increases.
Sute Tea from Central Market Life Exp 8*
I have Silver Embroidered Fisher's Outfit +1 while i wait for my +4 preorder.
I have penguin from Pearl shop (cringe, I know but im impatient.
I fish at hotspot at the little wooden bridge southeast of Gllish right at the Southern Wetlands node.
If u contribute one contribution point to that node, it will connect to Glish and you will get the most $$ for your fish if you sell it to the Trade Manager IN GLISH (not the one at the southern guard camp.)
The Ancient Relic Crystal Shards obtained from fishing at this spot are really nice. I get 11-15 a night AFK fishing which at 700K-800K each is a really nice bonus.
Still working on this achievement ugh.

Since the other achievements also take a long time, you will learn a lot about this game, so I'll keep things short here. This is how I worked on this achievement:
Gear:
Fishing Boat
Epheria Fishing Rod +10 (For AFK fishing over long periods of time)
Balenos Fishing Rod +10 (For AFK fishing over short periods of time)
Silver Embroidered Fisher's Clothes +3
Maple Float +10
Ash Float +10
Thin Harpoon x2 (for that one quest)
Pets:
Polar Bear
Lost Penguin
Other pets that enhance Life EXP, there are quite a few.
Port Epheria was my town of choice to head out into the deep ocean.
Fishing EXP is directly bound to LIFE EXP. If you have LIFE EXP enhancing items, you should use them. Skill EXP has nothing to do with this.
Do the fishing quests under "suggested". Every quest up to 44 is very easy and you will get a lot of fishing exp for it.
For AFK and non-AFK fishing there's one great spot that gives tremendous amounts of big blue fish, Cero and Black Marlin - and they bite like crazy. It is located on Kuit Island/Pirate Island on the north side near the crashed ship.
You can get there by taking the Fishing Boat (bought from Central Market) to the south side of the same island.
The spot I used is located on a broken plank near the Secret Treasure Chest, but other spots near here might have the same results:
To repair your equipment, go back to where you left your boat. There's a blacksmith just a few steps east of here.
Now, you have two options what to do with your fish, you can either drop it all, or use your boat to take it to Louruve Island. There's a trader here. You will have to connect the nodes though. Nodes can be connected on the world map, you do not actually need to go there, you just need to have discovered it.
Another option you do have is go after fishing schools in the deep ocean, but it requires constant searching and travelling. I do not think there's much time advantage to be had here.
This single achievement should take 250-400 hours, depending on how much AFK or manual fishing you choose to do.
Keep in mind that this is a MMORPG and things are bound to change.

One tip I would add to these already existing guides is that you can exchange the Discarded Glass Bottles that you occasionally fish up with Crio in Velia for a significant amount of fishing EXP. I only just realised this, and exchanging 55 of them boosted me up a few levels in the professional tier, so it's definitely worth doing! 😁
As an experienced fisher in black desert figured id throw out a guide for this.
most of this guide will mostly be tips and when is best to use items.
in my personal experience you get more experience in the long run going with a +10 epheria fishing rod. this is because of the extra durability, if your gone for so long the durability still being 100 doesn't help me. but it just goes from person to person, if gone for less then 6 hours use the belenos fishing rod.
I personally like to fish one location at a time until I get all the guru fish titles, one location that you can always be fishing would be altinova or calpheon. this is because from my experience that are always abundant.
now with the mastery update i would highly recommend to always be running loggia gear, all accessories(whatever you can afford)+fishing gear(enhance if possible).
also as of professional 1 you can toss all greeen fish this makes it to were all you will get at altinova is gold fish. recommend this as your starting point.
due to my experience with pc id like to say that some time in thee future they will be adding manos this is the "boss" tier of life skill gear but crafted. currently artisan 3 / master 1 as of writing this guide. about a week off.

The most boring trophy/achievement in the game. Experience is awarded only for successfully caught fish. The amount of experience depends on the type of fish caught. I recommend downloading fishing on a seasonal server, there is a 30% permanent bonus to experience for craft skills, which includes fishing. Also make the most of various bonuses for events. Very often they give experience bonuses not only to skill, but also to experience for fish. All this allows you to speed up the receipt several times.
The game has two fishing modes:
Fishing time in AFK mode can be reduced in two permanent ways. Get a pet whose main ability is to reduce AFK fishing time. Gives -5% to the auto-fishing time. Only one is needed, bonuses from different pets do not stack. Premium: marmot and otter (sold in the store for 1100 pearls), event pets: penguin, polar bear or dragon. Sometimes given out as a reward for entering the game. The easiest way to find a key for a polar bear or penguin from Amazon Prime is on sites that sell keys; they usually sell 100 rubles in the aisle. The second way is to buy a Baleno fishing rod at the market, sharpen it to +10 or buy a sharpened one. It gives a -25% reduction in auto-fishing time at level 10. You can also buy a fisherman's chair on the market; it also gives a 5% reduction in the time of auto-catching fish. The chair is not available for seasonal characters.
The time of the initial bite depends on two things. Your fishing skill. 3 units can be obtained from a guild skill by joining a suitable guild or by developing a skill in your guild. And 2 more units can be obtained from clothing. You can buy fisherman's clothing at the market; it gives 1-2 to your skill. You can save money if you go to an event where they give away a shark suit or a fishing suit for 7 days. The permanent version of the last costume was also distributed as a code on Amazon Prime, so you can find it on the corresponding sites for 100 rubles. Both costumes give 1 to the fishing skill. The second no less important point is the state of the point. If there are a lot of fish in it, then the bite will be frequent; if there are few fish, then the catch will be worse and there will be less chance of getting legendary fish. For this reason, you should not fish on Velia beach. There are always a lot of people there and almost no fish. It is better to drive to the neighboring town of Heidel. And there you can fish either on the river bank, if there is fish there, or in the swamps just below the city, there is 100% always a lot of fish there.
You can also buy a “Maple Float” at the market. It gives a bonus to the chance of catching rare fish. Which results in an increase in the experience gained. You can also exchange by exchanging your caught bottles at the fishmonger "Krio" at the pier in the city of "Velia". For every 5 bottles, it gives 300 contribution experience points and 30 fishing experience points. That even at Master 10 level gives about 5-10% of experience to the next level, at lower levels it generally allows you to get a couple of skill levels for five bottles handed over.
The game has two fishing modes:
- Manual: cast a fishing rod and wait for a bite. When the fish bites, press the button and play 2 mini-games. One for pressing a button in the correct zone, and the second for pressing the correct sequence of buttons. There will be no second mini-game if you press the button in the first one when the scale is 100% full. It turns out somewhere around one bite every 30-50 seconds, depending on the location and skill.
- Automatic: cast a fishing rod and go about your business. After a bite, after 3 minutes, the character will automatically catch the fish and cast the fishing rod again. No mini games. In this mode, you get 1 fish every ~4 minutes (a minute to bite and another 3 minutes to catch fish), depending on the location and skill.

The most difficult and longest trophy to achieve the desired platinum. How to speed up fishing: Buy a Baleno fishing rod +10 (the best fishing rod, can be used in AFK mode), Fisherman's clothes preferably +5 (+40% to profession experience). We pump up the guild fishing skills to the maximum (+3) and (+2 from the fisherman’s clothing), this will increase the speed of fish production and look for a good spot, preferably where blue fish or sometimes legendary ones constantly appear. Will it take more than 100 hours without AFK mode or more than 300+ hours in AFK mode for your treasured trophy to drop????
