About 30 to 40 minutes in, you'll encounter your very first fight. To kill a monster, just use your flashlight and aim it at the "monster". Watch where your dog is looking at, he's always looking at the right direction. If you aim it correctly, your controller will vibrate and you'll see a white-ish cloud, that means the "monster" got hit and it now moved somewhere else.
Just repeat the same process. Look at where your dog is barking at, aim your flashlight over there, wait till the controller vibrates and then it should get hit. Very straightforward once you get the hang of it.
