To perform a Righteous Repost you need to press the X button at the time your blade hits the enemy during a parry. If your timing is off you will only perform an execution.
You can tell a RR from a standard execution by the flash of lightning during the animation.

The Righteous Riposte is a mechanic that you lets parry enemy attacks and counterattack yourself. By pressing 
you enter a counter stance, if an enemy hits you during this time The Penitent One will automatically counterattack. If you then press 
at the exact moment your counterattack hits the enemy and will instantly become stunned and executable. Do this five times and the trophy is yours.
