Cross combos are fairly easy to perform. Press

. This should give you control of both characters for a limited time. Easiest to practice in VS mode with a second controller.
The cross gauge (the blue bar at the bottom of the screen) needs to be full to pull this off, so let it regenerate and then repeat the process.
