The start of mission 3 (Weapons Facility) on easy mode is an excellent place to try and get this achievement. After dying a few times a capsule will appear right at the beginning - melee attack it just as the 'S' vanishes, which should give you the 'W' (whip) item.

With the whip fully extended, now and grab the power-up directly above. You may have to press the button a couple of times to extend and retract the whip.

I was playing on easy mode. I think you may have to die once or twice for it to appear too.

Confirmed! Start on easy, lose all your lives and continue. Capsule is there. It wouldn't grab it at first but then I tried holding rb to stay in same spot and it hooked up.

You have to make sure to hit it with the very end of the whip or else it doesn't seem to latch onto the power up you're trying to grab.

Can also be done on 1-3 I think it is. you have to climb up and there is a 1 up in the top right corner. Normally you need double jump to get it. If you have whip, you can get it too.

I did this on the third section of mission III. Here is a video of how I got it.

The tip of the whip allows you to pick up a bot or extra. life. Refused to pick up weapons)
I wouldn't have known about it if it weren't for the trophy.
