Not 100% sure if this is correct but I'll put it here for people to try.
This will take a little work. So first off you need to gets styles which you do by equipping different armor and weapon pieces. So everytime you get a new piece of equipment equip it, just for a second if it is worse than what you already have which it will probably be. Then you need to go to a outfit designer in a big town. They look like cowboy hats on the map. Now once you have a 2nd appearance for all your armor and weapons just switch everything. You will know if it switched bc it will have a blue arrow circle thingy on the equipment piece picture.

Don't bother putting a piece of gear on if it says "can't obtain appearance" for obvious reasons.
It would seem that many appearances for types of gears aren't obtained until you have the higher grade version of them - as well as being pieces that allow enhancing. I'm just not sure on where the threshold is for these at different lvls but as of right now I'm lvl 32 just starting to get A tier gear which is unlocking many B tier pieces that have always been unobtainable prior.
