After you finish each of the first 3 stages, you will encounter a new character/ally/adventurer. Walk up to them and when prompted, press
to talk to them. After the dialogue, you will add that person as a changeable character.
If any of the three characters die while you're playing as them, don't worry - it won't ruin this achievement.

You can do this in Ultimate Mode, I just did and it popped for me first try

Beat the game in the default mode while recruiting Miriam, Gebel and Alfred. When you beat Stage 1, 2 and 3, you will rescue an adventurer. Approach the adventurer and press 
to recruit them. From that point on, you can play as that character by pressing 
or 
to toggle through your lineup. All you have to do next is beat the game.
