How to unlock the World Traveler achievement in Borderlands 2 - Definitive Guide

First, if you import a character that has this achievement, you will unlock it by fast travelling to a new place. But, if you don't have it....

For this achievement, you will need to discover all named locations in the Borderlands.

To make things simple, you should have NO grayed out areas on any of your maps. When an area is completely discovered, you will see no areas grayed out and a clear border around the edges of the map.

Also keep in mind that you won't be able to unlock this until after beating the game and receiving a few additional side missions. I am not going to type an entire location guide, but instead list some commonly missed areas.

Now, on to some easily missed locations.
1) Southern Shelf -- Fast travel to southern shelf. From there, head left and enter a location called Southern Shelf - Bay. If you didn't do the side mission "Symbiosis" earlier in the game, you wouldn't have discovered this location yet. Make sure to uncover all of the grey areas as there are about 3 or 4 named locations in Southern Shelf - Bay

2) Eridium Blight -- After uncovering the whole map, you'll probably notice a large square in the middle of the map that has yet to be discovered. If you head out right from the fast travel station, you will come upon a tunnel entrance that is guarded by lasers. Follow the electrical wire up to the nearby tower and either shoot or lob a grenade up to the fuse box. You'll know where it is because that's where the wire ends and it shoots out some sparks. After that, run back down and jump down to the bottom. Ka-ching, location discovered.

3) Sawtooth Cauldron -- After clearing out the buzzard's nest (the big oil rig looking thing in the middle of the map) you need to jump off of the SW corner into a small camp. There will be trunk full of loot there as a reward.

4) Arid Nexus -- If you did the mission involving pump stations in co-op, there's a good chance you missed discovering one of them. Pump station #2 is very hard to spot if you don't know where to look. Look closely at the map and you'll see a small square that is right next to the pipeline. Catch a ride to it and take the lift down to discover it.

5) Caustic Caverns -- Once again, after exploring you'll probably notice a grey area in the middle of the map. This one takes a bit of work. You'll need to do the side mission "Lost Treasure" At the end of the mission you'll take an elevator ride to the top of the building and discover the location along with some loot!

6) Ore Chasm -- After completing the game, you will get a side mission called "Hyperion Circle of Slaughter". To get there, head to Eridium Blight once more and catch a ride up to Mal (the robot you may or may not have helped during an earlier side mission.) Once through the doors, you'll discover Ore Chasm

7) Terramorphus Peak -- After completing the game, you'll get a side mission called "You. Will. Die. (Seriously). Head to Thousand Cuts and follow the waypoint down some stairs and into a cave. You'll need 4 eridium to enter this location. Once inside, you'll automatically discover the location. I strongly advise against trying to fight Terramorphus alone. (Additional note: User Deathsangelz commented saying that they got the achievement without visiting here, so you may not need to discover this location.)

8) User Macfly77422 pointed out another location that can only be found by doing a side mission. You will need to get the battle of the gangs quest from Ellie in the Dust. Sometime during the mission you will need to travel to Holy Spirits (the bar) and you will head down to the basement. You won't be able to discover this location unless you take this side mission.

9) Friendship Gulag -- Located in the Dust if I'm not mistaken. There's a path up to it if you head out right a ways from Ellie's garage.

This list of locations is not comprehensive. I listed some locations that gave me trouble and figured others probably had similar issues. If there are locations that gave you trouble or you would like to see added to the list, please comment or PM me.

Ore Chasm does not seem to be necessary for the One version. I just popped this when I hit the Vault of the Warrior first time through. Been through everywhere else but Terramorphous peak.

Can confirm, got this (12/28/18) without Ore Chasm or Terramorphus Peak.

Had done all side missions and was still missing the Southern Shelf - Bay area. Great point!

Kinda annoyed that this will not proc for my Siren. First character I ever made in BL2 back on 360, has World Traveler and Did It All.

Gone around in Fast Travel to force it to acknowledge World Traveler and it wont come up.

Southern shelf Bay is sneaky as it doesn't have a fast travel point.
After getting the other location achievements this area was the only thing I was missing! Thank you again for the guide.

I'm not sure, unless there's some location that you can't return to after completing it. But IIRC, you can pretty much travel to wherever you want once you unlock it.

If you got the other 3 achievements should you get this one then too or is there more area that you could miss that aren't attached to the other 3 achievements?

Was missing two locations heading south in Southern Shelf Bay. If you're missing some areas it'll probably be these.

In addition to most of what is listed here, the area in the fridge where you fight rakkman was the one that I missed.

After 8 years, before I've started Tiny Tina's Wonderland. I have decided to visit the previous entry's. And without rushin I've got some previously unachieved achievements. This one here was the Holly spirits zone, from clan war mission.

I was missing a big part of Southern Shelf - Bay which leads into "Ice Flows". I already had all the side mission completed so I guess this part of the map was unrelated to the quest.

Does it include DLC locations? I've gone from map to map in the base game and can't see any blank spaces. I've done all main amd side quests.

After hours of searching I found it. The map wasn't even greyed out.
Go back to southpaw steam and power (from three horns valley) and kill all the guys, go to the very end of the map and when you get to the final place, open the doors pushing the green button for the shortcut to the beggining of the map.

Yep, Southern Shelf Bay for me as well. I stupidly thought it was just the start area, completely forgot it had a travel point to the left. Check here if you're stuck.

I can confirm that Terramorphous Peak is not needed for the achievement on the Xbox One version either. I think it's the same for the 360 version as well.

By the way, the place that's needed from the Holy Spirits bar is called the Ale Wee Cavern, the one that you mentioned for the side mission that's at the Holy Spirits bar location. I didn't go down there with a couple of my friends the first time, so I had to go back, on my own, and get to that location. Make sure you complete it all the way around to get the dark-grey areas in that place too before heading back out!

I too can confirm that Terramorphus Peak is not needed on XB1.

I just spent like an hour reading through a bunch of great guides like yours, Major. Then I did "Request Update" for something us and BOOM. The achievement was already done. My XB1/phone alert me to MAYBE 20% of the achievements I get. Man I'm glad this site exists.

For those struggling with it, I’ll give my input:
Not my first time playing BL2, so I definitely kept an eye out for all the “often missed” areas. After finishing the game and all side quests (minus Terramorphous of course), I went back and looked at all my maps. Again, all were marked so I got really confused. I wasted some time going over all the easily missed areas again, but still no luck.
WHAT POPPED IT FOR ME: I walked through the entirety of Southpaw Steam & Power, which popped it.
I’m guessing the first time after I got the chests (but before I opened the second gate), I quit the game and “called it a night”, but there’s a very important checkpoint around that gate. It doesn’t mark as undiscovered on the map, and it’s rather sneaky. Hope this helps someone else :)

Holy Spirits Note: *(completing “Clan War” missions will allow you into the Ale Cavern, “Clan War: End of the Rainbow” mission specifically; just follow the mission and once you finish you will have discovered every area in Holy spirits)*

For me it popped after I completed the Holy Spirits area.
Good Luck out there.

This guide is pretty much copy and pasted from trueachievements.com, which unfortunately is a much stronger community than the Playstation version.
There is a lot to cover so I really didn't feel like writing one up myself when an excellent one already exists.
So thank you MAJORPOOPY for taking the time to create this:

First, if you import a character that has this achievement, you will unlock it by fast travelling to a new place. But, if you don't have it....

Personal note: I completed my first playthrough, went to Terramorphous' lair, and had believed I found all locations. The trophy didn't pop. I was like "what the hell?" so I went to Southern Shelf - bay, and sure enough thats the final area I had forgotten. So check that area out, its early in the game and big-picture trophy hunting may not have been on your mind when you were in that area.

I can advise that you need to open it immediately on every map you visit (I mean, so that there are no blackouts). This will help a lot. because there are a lot of cards and you can get confused.

I opened the entire map, but they didn’t give me the trophy. There was not a single blackout.. It turned out that the problem was in the Southpaw Steam and Power lock. There at the end you need to open the grate and run to the exit. After that they gave me a trophy.

If you received four bronze trophies for exploring the map, but World Traveler did not, then most likely you forgot to open the entire Southern Shelf Bay (not Southern Shelf, namely Southern Shelf Bay). There is not a single story mission, and the side missions do not require its exploration, so 99% that you missed this particular location.

It is also worth paying attention to the FriendshipGoulag location. It is used once in a side quest, and if you run strictly according to the assignment, then with a 99% probability you will not have a postcard piece of the map there. I suffered for a long time until I googled it =)

It is located in the upper left corner of The Dust map.

I'll add a little. If you start the game on true vault huntermode, then all the locations that you opened in the last game will remain open (on the map). (This mod is available after beating the game)

For a long time I could not understand where and what I missed, since the previous trophies for locations were knocked out. I thought it was a glitchy trophy, but it turns out that while I was away from the console, another player connected to me and ran through a small location in the story mission in the bunker tower, teleporting us further.
Be careful when playing in co-op.

I had a problem getting this trophy, all the maps were open, but the trophy did not drop with the Highlandexplorer trophy. The problem was precisely in Highland explorer, in this video the beginning of the 10th minute shows a location that is very easy to miss, since it is displayed as visited, but in fact you can forget to go there.

in Southern Shelf, when you run to the boss on a cannon, you need to run through the people to the left, after checking all the other assumptions, it worked.
