How to unlock the Big Tournament achievement in Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition - Definitive Guide
Oh. I must point out: After Proof Yourself there is. No more quests on the bounty board!
You must finish all 3 of the smaller maps (Hellburbia, Angelic Ruins and the Gully) before a curtain opens with 4, 5 and 6. (Which are the same maps but harder)
No matter with how many people you will do this, this DLC will take a LONG time to finish. Each bigger map will take anywhere from 90 minutes to 2 hours to beat. Per map!
Here are the facts:
*Do this with friends. Alone this will be as dumb as fighting Terramorphous with level 1 gear at OP8 or Crawmerax with starter weapons. It can be done solo (kind of!) But more on that later.
*Bring good gear with you. Getting killed sentences you to a penalty box (in which you can spectate for the rest of the round. If you and all your team mates are killed the entire round will be reset!)
*Like the first 3 smaller maps, each round will have a certain enemy type.
*In the first set of maps, at one point you had one or two modifiers to spice up the game a bit. In these maps, more rounds have these and there can be up to four to make it all a bit harder. These range from certain types of guns doing more damage, enemies being faster or you having no shields or health gets drained slowly unless you kill enemies or there is moon gravity so you and enemies jump a bit higher.
*BUT! There is a way of making this all a bit easier. The game levels with you. What I mean by that is that when you play the arena at level 8, all enemies will be around that level. And this is where you could make this achievement easier for you and your buddies. And yes, with this method you can also play the game solo!
*Have at least one buddy on a very low level. You need to have to be at least level 2 to start the arena quest. (Thanks REDWINGS05 for pointing that out)
But enemies will be at least level 12!
(Log in with the profile you will have the lowest level, plug in another controller with the higher level and log in)
*Finish the whopping 20 rounds one each of the three maps(4, 5 and 6!!!) , and to be sure: With that one player on a low level! It does not need to be done in one sitting of 6 straight hours, but just to be sure with the same character hosting the game.
*After the final wave of the last map you need the achievement for finishes, the achievement pops for all players in the game.
Good luck and patience to all trying this one. If you give thumbs down, tell me why so I can edit or add information/tips.
Once that is done, a curtain opens with the same maps numbered 4, 5 and 6 and those are the bigger arenas. But yes, there is no other quest, and no XP to get.
There are two ways to make this easier:
Bring a lower level character (either splitscreen or online) to be the host. You can get there at very low level (2-3) if they come as soon as completing skags at the gate. This will cause the enemies to be in the mid to upper teens, which makes them easy picking for a character that is 50+.
Even doing this, though it is a long, tedious process. However, you can skip entire rounds, if you are able to kill the bosses on wave 5 of a round quickly enough.
This is detailed in the 360 version here:
Solution for Big Tournament In Borderlands
Here is my experience doing it on the XB1 version.
1. To prepare you will need a way of killing the boss quickly enough. According to the 360 version, this can be done with a normal drop, the Eridian Shotgun (Thunder Storm). It may also require that you be significantly higher level than the enemies (see above). It can also be done if you have gotten a modded weapon. It did NOT work for me with a shotgun that did a "mere" 400k X13 damage per shot. It did work with a shotgun that did -2.1 billion x13 damage per shot (yes, that is negative and billion). The boss has some sort of damage protection for the first several seconds after spawning. (The 400k damage shotgun only did 5 damage per hit).
2. What you want to do is be right up by the curtain when the boss wave starts. As soon as you see the sparkles of the boss spawning in, kill him (and only him). He will spawn just to the righ of the center. (One exception, on the Hanz/Franz wave, kill Hanz, who will spawn to the right of the normal boss spawn spot.)
3. If you've done it correctly/quickly enough, the curtain should close with the bosses minions still inside and the countdown should start within a few seconds. Do not kill any of the minions until the end of round score screen has come up and you have dismissed it. Then kill them all as quickly as possible.
4. Wave 1 of the next round should start, but then immediately start another countdown from 10. After that countdown completes, it will skip ahead one full round.
5. Doing this on a 20 wave round I failed on 3 round skips, so i ended up playing 12 rounds instead of 20.
6. I'm not sure exactly what will happen if you do a skip at the end of round 19 or 20. A friend said it continued on to round 21. I personally avoided skipping in rounds 19/20.
You will unlock this for completing all three large challenges in all three coliseums. To do this with ease, though the tedium can't be avoided, you should do it in splitscreen with a second low level account.
Load the game up on an alternate profile (a Silver account will suffice) with a new character and complete the tutorial with that character so that you can gain access to the fast travel New-U station in Fyrestone. Once you are at this point, quit the game and then start it up again with the same character, only this time sign in your main account as a second player on a second controller and have them join the game, making sure the alternate, low level character is the host.
When you then play the game, the enemies will be at around level 10 so if you use your main character of level 50+ then the enemies will die in an instant and their damage will pose absolutely no threat to you whatsoever. Then you can play all of the challenges like this for an extremely easy time.
Of course be aware that if you die you will have to start again from the beginning of a challenge and they each will take around two to three hours so don't become too complacent as having to start any again will be very disheartening.
GLITCHED
Be sure to use the same character for all three large tournaments on the same playthrough so if you are doing them on Playthrough 1, don't join anyone online who is doing this DLC doing Playthrough 2.
In some extremely rare cases, the individual trophies will unlock but the Big Tournament does not. Someone has posted that loading that character save a few days later may unlock it. Also note that the PS4 version of this DLC is reportedly very unstable once you get to rounds 17-20 in the Large Arenas so you may want to wait for a patch, before starting this. It has been reported that using Fire and Corrosive Weapons can help reduce the chances of a crash, because they will vaporise the enemies and leave virtually nothing behind to cause a memory leak. The PS5 version of this DLC, doesn't suffer from these horrendous stability issues so play it on a PS5 if you can.
Credit to Terminator for pointing out the glitch info.
Exploit:
All the enemies are the level of the "host" (weakest enemy is level 12). NOTE: In splitscreen, the "host" is controller 1. Play in splitscreen or online with the "host" player being level 12 or under and it will be a breeze for a high level player to beat the missions.
I suggest you go to your PS3 Power Settings and set it to not power off the controllers. Make a brand new character in Splitscreen on controller 1 (the "host"), with your strongest character on controller 2. For the rest of this, you will be playing on controller 2. As soon as you can, use the New-U station to fast travel to "The Underdome". In The Underdome you will find a bank to store 12 items (you can buy upgrades depending on the host's level) and an in-game board to start the missions. PS4 Note: For this exploit to work on the PS4, you will need to create an Alt account and set both as Primaries. Once you have setup your Alt account, make sure you switch accounts before booting up the game so your Alt becomes the host.
Note that the larger coliseums do not use the bulletin board, the #4-6 rooms simply open up after you turn in the quest of the smaller three challenges. Each of the larger coliseum challenges has twenty rounds with five waves each (total of 100 waves per larger coliseum, total of 300 additional waves for the larger coliseums, total of 375 waves total for this DLC). Along the way, you will also get the trophy for each coliseum as you complete them.
- You won't get any XP or Weapon Proficiency skills.
- You will get credit towards challenges and will earn EXP if you complete those here.
- All non-boss waves will have supply drops after the round. Run to the big pills to restore Health and Crates to collect Ammo.
- The final wave of each round is a boss wave. After killing the boss, some loot will spawn in the starting cage (underneath the penalty zone that controller 1 will constantly be in if you are doing this the easy way). Run there in time to nab the loot. The loot will be adjusted to match the level of the "host" player so will be very under-levelled if you use the exploit.
- There are quite a number of rules/maxims, applied randomly per wave. You will at some point have one rule/maxim applied and progressively it will build in the larger challenges to four rules/maxims simultaneously. After a wave, the rules/maxims will randomly get redone. For a full list of rules, see here: LINK.
To do this you will need a second gamepad.
Create a new user on the PS (can be local, without PSN). Enter the game as him, and connect as the main character as the second player in the lobby.
You start the game and run to the first city.
The first character is to use the teleport to the moxie arenas (since the small character does not yet have such an opportunity)
You arrive, watch the screensaver, take the quest for 3 small arenas and after them go to conquer 3 large ones.
Because the host is a small character, all enemies will be level 12, which significantly reduces the time and nerves of execution.
The only IMPORTANT moment, when connecting from a second gamepad with the main character, always select Playthrough 1
Also, the game crashes very often at waves 16-20. This bug has not been fixed yet.
It arises due to the number of parts of dead enemies in the arena and, having accumulated a critical mass, begins to fly out.
To avoid this, I advise you to use fiery or corrosive weapons and, if possible, shoot not at the enemies themselves - but next to them at their feet, so that they are set on fire / poisoned and die from this effect and not from bullets - in this case the body will disappear and no remains will remain . This method helped me close the arenas, although before that I flew out on waves 16-20 and flew into space on a burning butt. It’s better to spend 1-2 hours more killing enemies like this in a perverted way than to restart from scratch. My personal weapon of choice is repeaters and fire/corrosion smgs, as their bullets are weaker and less likely to kill enemies.
If you play as a siren, then it’s simpler, kill the enemy so that the Phoenix skin is activated - and run and burn everyone.
-We take two copies (so that it’s not boring and you can change it for fun) weapons for fire and corrosion
The action plan is as follows: on waves 1, 2, 4, 5 we use weapons for the element of fire and an active skill for fire, on wave 3 (horde) we use weapons for corrosion and an active skill for corrosion because Almost everyone in the horde is immune to fire. When destroying opponents, we try not to finish them off by shooting, but to let them burn out. Repeat 60 times and the most boring trophies are in your pocket.
There are no corpses in the arena, which means the game doesn’t crash, don’t waste your time. Completed all three arenas using this method without crashes and very quickly.
