How to unlock the Big Tournament achievement in Borderlands - Definitive Guide

I just wanted to post this up for people that want to do the achievement on their own. You can set up a local splitscreen match if you use a second controller and profile. Have the extra profile start up as a level 1 character and have your level 50 character that you normally use join that game via splitscreen. Run through the opening to the game takes about 2 minutes (with your level 50). The first travel point "inside" Fyrestone near the doc's place will allow you both to travel to the Underdome. Once there use your level 50 to role over the opposition. I timed each round takes 8 minutes to complete on average so your looking at 40 minutes each for the small challenges and 160 minutes per large challenge. I did this with a Berserker so your results may vary based on your character. There are great choke points available because some of the waves later can be overwhelming.

Gully: rocks on lower level far left of the stage can be hidden behind by jumping through rocks or jumping off cliff to get there. Great for level 15-20 horde waves.

Hell-burbia: far left of the stage use the crates at the top of the stairs to jump on top of the building (thanks indigoX00)... avoids enemies spawning next to you and avoids horde waves.

Ruins: to the far right of the stage in the middle of the board use the ramps. If facing the ramps use the left ramp, here you can jump up onto the ledge just above the platform to avoid horde waves. Also the bottom of this ramp obscures enemy line of sight and is a good place to regen shields if you get caught off guard.

Final tips: Take in class mods that regenerate health depending on your class or just use your berserk (for you Berserkers out there), this helps deal with the ever annoying double modifier given out by Moxxi of vampire (constant life loss but killing an enemy regens health) and no shields... this can be deadly to a single player, if the enemies spawn far away from each other.

Lastly since you are the only player you can pause the game and take breaks doing it this way

IMPORTANT NOTE: I have tested and confirmed a level 1 character can travel to the Underdome. Here is how: Step one sign in a secondary profile as controller 1 and start up a splitscreen match. Then have controller 2 join as a level 50 (or whatever level that has fast travel ability). Start the beginning of the game... use the level 50 only and go into Fyrestone passed the opening sequence. Use the fast travel post in front of the doc's place once your INSIDE Fyrestone. Only the level 50 can start the fast travel process, but once you do, it takes both the level 50 and level 1 to the Underdome. The enemies will still be roughly level 12-15 starting out. Hope this helps clarify have a great day everyone.

Just one little sidenote to this otherwise fine solution, a lvl 1 character can't travel to the Underdome, you have to be at least lvl 10.

I will have to disagree here I am currently in the Underdome with a level 1 (charater is now level 6 due to beating the first 3 challenges and turning it in to unlock rounds 4,5,6) and a level 50... this does work and I have tested it, it might be a glitch if it isn't working for other people, I will have a friend test it and confirm. Thank you for the info and if anyone else can't jump from firestone with a level 1 let me know.

As long as the level 50 accesses the quick travel post......BOTH can go.

The biggest problem I have with this solution is that you mispelled Fyrestone. lol

Awesome. I was wondering if this could be done. I figured that I would have to build up the second profile to the point of fast traveling. That's going to save me a lot of time! Thanks for the help.

does the second profile (lvl 1 character) have to be an actual GT or can it be signed on as a guest in order for your lvl 50 character using your GT to get the achievements

Im doing this with a level 15 instead of a level 1. That way my second account can actually be helpful, with ammo/health regen.

Worked well. I used a level 6 character from my other profile and my level 50 Siren, making the enemies level 12. Still mowed through them easily, but it was a total grind. Fun for the first few waves, then it becomes tedious.

Voted up.

stupid ques but how do you load up your lvl 50 or whatever character from the splitscreen menu? i tried this and its only letting me start new characters for both profiles

By VengenZZZ6661 on 03 Mar 2010 08:09
there is a select character option in the lower right corner if you load up a splitscreen starting with the secondary profile as the main controller. So step one sign in with secondary profile, once on the screen where it show the secondary profile has a character, there is an option for player 2 to sign in, MAKE SURE you have logged controller 2 in as your main profile, once you have pressed start there should be an option to select character. Let me know if its still not work and i will test it.

VengenZZZ i just tested it and I think I found your issue. You have to click select character with controller one first aka the your other profile's character, then the option for players 2 to select your powerful character will appear. Hope this helps.

Okay, my problem now is when I select my character with the guest profile signed in to controller one, I picked another character and then I picked my character on my profile, controller 2, and then I went back to my controller one selecting a new character and it automatically sets my profile to a new character as well. WTF?

The problem is that you can't choose "New Character" and an existing character in the same split-screen game. The solution is to start a new character (single player mode) on your alternate gamertag, play through the intro until you meet Dr. Ned, then quit. Now... start up a split-screen game with the alternate gamertag as Controller #1, choose the character that you just played through the intro w/ and then join the game with your main gamertag as Controller #2 and select your lvl 50+ character.

Hope that helps for those that were having trouble w/ Borderlands only allowing two "New Characters" in their split-screen game as I was having the same issue...

I have a few questions. If you are basically doing this solo, what do you do with the low level character? I haven't played one minute of this DLC since I got it, but I figure that the character would be in the arena with you. I assume that you can try to protect the low level but that can't be the case in the later stages of the arena. What happens when the low level dies?

when the low level character dies it spawns in a holding area till the next wave and then it gets killed again. You do not need to protect it.

For those wondering, it took us roughly 2h30 to finish The Gully with 2 lvl 61s, a 44 and a lvl 16 that was hosting. So plan this ahead so you have enough time.

How do you even unlock the 20 round arenas? I have done the quests to clear all 3 arenas (5 rounds). I go back into them hoping to do the 20 rounders and am still stuck with 5 round arena games.

You have to go to the board down stairs from the bank and turn in the mission, then a new area at the bottom passed the mission turn in appears with doors 4,5, and 6.

You can jump in at the end of someone's game on lvl 19 and I believe as long as you are there for the entire lvl 20 the achievement pops. Just to be careful I would try and get in around lvl 17 or so. As for one play through you either can do it yourself on playthrough 1 or 2. The weapon drops are different on two, but if you play online a lot I am sure someone has given you "better" weapons. If you prefer the purist approach and are doing this solo try playthrough 1 in my opinion. Enjoy!

You may want to note that with the level one character, you must start single player first. You have to get off the bus and get your HUD. When it tells you walking controls you can quit out then start split screen with your second controller. If you do not do this then you will not be able to select anything but a new character on both profiles.

This solution worked great - had my alternate account go in as a level 1 Siren, and my account as a level 63. The highest level enemies I ever remember seeing were level 11. With my regenerating health and shields I never even came close to death. The level 1 Siren ended up at level 6 when all was said and done, just being bait on the map and getting exp from progression. It took forever to do, as it took between 2.5 - 3 hrs per large arena doing it by myself in split screen. Finally finished off the game in prep for Borderlands 2. [One other bonus - my alternate account got all of the Dr.Ned achievements for free when I loaded up Underdome for some reason - they all just popped without even entering that area - crazy}

Here's an interesting twist. Someone gave me an incredible shield (modded, I presume) so I attempted the challenges using a single high level character. Although the enemies weren't damaging me, I didn't have a modded weapon and so it was taking a long time to kill them. So even with a super shield, I should have followed this solution anyway.

If you are playing as Mordecai, I suggest maxing out the Predator Skill, the Bird of Prey Skill, and the left side of the Bloodwing tree. Then equip a Ranger class mod with +4 Predator and +3 Bird of Prey. This will bring down Bloodwing's cooldown to 1 second and Bloodwing will attack up to 9 enemies before flying back to you. This makes the 20 rounders a little easier.

This must be the worst DLC I've ever played.. I've completed 2/3 now and each arena has taken ~3hours to complete.. Just pointless grinding without any gameplay satisfaction.. Only positive thing is that I haven't faced any crashes during gameplay (now that I mention it, it'll propably happen in the last arena).

Not sure if you can use a guest, but I wouldn't because once you travel to the underdome with that character as a guest and you beat the first three small challenges, you will need a GT to go back unless you plan on playing straight through. To earn the achievements by playing straight through would take over 11 hours. So best bet is to create a extra gamertag and use it, that way once you get tired of wave after wave, you can save and comeback later. (IF you do though load up the same characters and rerun through the opening, and fast travel back to the underdome.

response to Jimmy: Do not use a guest profile... create an actual secondary profile, do not use a guest xboxlive profile. For example, I use a non gold xboxlive profile called exiledeadpool as controller one, and Darksky602 as my second controller to make this work properly. You need to do it this way so once you beat a challenge you can save, otherwise even if you could get it to work with a guest you would have no profile to save to and would have to do all the moxxi achievements in one roughly 11 hour sitting. If for any reason you still can't get this to work send me a friend request and we can set up a time and I will walk you through it step by step through an xboxlive party. Have a good day.

got a question about this one.

i was playing The Angelic Ruins to round 20 wave 5, i completed it and i get my achievement for that.

but normally when you complete a arena they should let you autotransport to the underdome. right?
but they didnt do it for me, once i defeated the boss in round20 wave 5 i just stand there.

the arena was empty and no exit to find.
i think i was searching for an exit for like 20 minutes and i didnt find anything.
so i pressed start button and exit the arena to the underdome.

now my question is: is the Big Tournament achievement still ubtainabel for me? or should i restart the Angelic Ruins? thanks grtz chaplin

Wanted to confirm a few questions that have come up. You can get this on any combination of either playthrough with or without having completed the mission for the 3 smaller tournaments.

I did Hellburbia on playthrough 1 before completing the 3 x 5 round smaller tournaments, then did Angelic ruins playthrough 2 before completing the 3 x 5 round smaller tournaments, finally completed the Gully on playthrough 1 after completing the 3 x 5 round smaller tournaments.

Okay so if you wanted to go to the Underdome w/o using a lvl 50 to Fast Travel or if you want to go on your Second Playthrough, all you have to do is complete the mission "Skags At The Gate," where you kill 5 Skags for Dr Zed. It's only the 4th mission and shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to reach this point.

Also, you definitely do not have to be level 10 to go to the Underdome. All that matters is the completion of the mission I mentioned above. If you only kill what you are required to, you should be just over level 3 by the time you reach the Underdome.

Here is a question I have. I went to underdome in single player with my main character to start the 3 small tournament mission and I completed it with a group of people online and the host turned in the quest completing it for everyone getting us the achievement for that. I go back to underdome with my main character and the 3 small tournament quest was there uncompleted.

So I go into splitscreen with a low level alternate account to do the quest on that charaacter to try and allow me to do the larger tournaments myself and on my main character it shows the quest completed on the screen without the "TURN IN!". I try to see if I can turn it in and the job board is red but shows the little use pop up. So if I complete the large tournaments with my main character online will I get the big tournament achievement?

There's also a giltch that I found at http://borderlands.wikia.com/wiki/Mad_Moxxi%27s_Underdome_Ri... that will help you skip some rounds entirly. Using this method I completed Angelic Ruins in two hours. Credit goes to who ever posted this on the Borderlands Wiki.

"There is in fact a way to skip a few of the rounds.

What you will need:

1. Eridian Shotgun(Thunder Storm)
2. 2 players(one must be a low leveled character, the other a high level)
3. Timing

The steps

1. Run through the first 4 waves(The round skips can only be done at the boss wave)
2. Before the boss wave starts, position yourself aiming at the center of the stage(this can be marked by the ramp(the middle of the three sections of the ramp)

* Immediately upon the boss spawning, shoot and kill him with the thunder storm

1. Do not kill the henchmen yet.
2. If you see the curtains close while the henchmen are spawning, this has been executed correctly, otherwise you will need to wait until the next round.
3. After the curtains close, you will need to wait a few seconds until a countdown timer starts from 10.
4. After continuing out of the end of round stats, kill those henchmen.
5. Wave 1 of the new round will start.
6. A few seconds later, the countdown from 10 will start.

*
o After the countdown you will get the end of round stats. Continue, and the new round will start.
* The boss needs to die before his henchmen spawn. ie. Nine Toes would need to die before his dogs spawn

*
o You will still need to kill wave 1 of the prior round that you skipped.

Why do I need...

The thunder storm - Because regular bullets will only do 1 damage to the enemy, whereas the thunderstorm does a great deal of elemental damage fast enough to take out the boss.

To wait before killing the henchmen - The programming that was done appears to be that if there are no enemies the boss wave on the field after the first one appears, end that round. By killing the boss fast enough, you make this true. The henchmen still spawn, making it so that when you kill them after the next round starts, this is true again.

This basically saves you 4 rounds each time, as you will still have to fight wave 1 of the previous round. It will still save you the additional time, as wave 1 of the next round will spawn while you are still fighting that previous wave.

Note: Some boss waves this will not work with. Their spawn time is delayed or they have extreme recharge on their shields upon spawning. So basically you'll be able to get, within the 20 rounds, 3-5 of them skipped, which can save upwards of 1-2 hours depending."

When facing Hanz & Franz, Hanz will always be the first one to spawn and he will always spawn to the right (Stage Left) of where the boss should be normally. So it is still possible to do the glitch with them.

You don't need a second player or the elemental shotgun. I got this to work multiple times on Hell-Burbia, solo and with randoms joining my game.
You can use a modded weapon, especially the common shotgun that does 99,999 damage.

As an added bonus, if you manage to clear the 1st wave of the next round off quickly enough then it jumps to the next round. I spammed where I thought the respawn was going to be with rockets. This happened twice in one game, e.g. I glitched the boss on 13/5, skipped to 14/1 and then skipped to 15/1 and then 17/5, 18/1, 19/1! I can also confirm that it works with Hanzz and Franzz; just don't kill Franzz until after the countdown.

I can vouch for this guide. At first i didnt think it would work, but hes right, as soon as the boss mission starts, stand in front of the curtains and as soon as it opens, kill the boss instantly and the curtain will close while the other enemies spawn behind it. The only bad thing i can think of while doing this is that after you kill the boss and the countdown is over the screen that tells you your kills and stuff pops up and you cant see very good at all, so if you still have a couple of enemies around it will be difficult to kill them or to keep from getting killed. I went through this with a shotgun that does 214,748X13 damage, and a shield that makes you invincible while wearing it. But to be honest with you, props for ANYONE that can get through all of these arenas with a regular shield and ANY guns that are found in the game itself and not "made" and then put into it. These arenas are SOOOO time consuming and can get pretty boring.

The easiest way I have found to do this will require you teaming up with at least two more people whom have characters at level 50.

The best thing I've found to do is for the host to be a level 5 (you could be lower as well) character and your friends bring in a level 50 character or the highest level character that they have.

The game scales the enemies to the host so if the host is level 5, then all the enemies will be level 5 making it easier on you because your friends are higher up than you.

The main thing is for the level 5 character to stay out of harms way for the most part. I'd suggest keeping one of your friends close that way if you get downed they can easily heal you.

I'm using the Siren so if I get in a bad spot, I can phase out and run to a safer spot, hence the reason I suggest being level 5. All in all each arena should take you around 1-5 hours to complete. Hope this helps, good luck.

First, you must complete the smaller tournaments before unlocking the big tournaments. Once you have unlocked the larger challenges and completed the last of them, the trophy will unlock. There are several ways to complete each large tournament:

1) Solo. Grind it out for hours fighting enemies equal to your level.

2) Co-op. Have your main character be a low level (10-20) and your second a high level (50+). Have the low level character start up the larger tournament(s) you still need to complete and use your high level character to kill enemies. This is the safer method compared to playing solo.

3) Online. Jump in a game that is playing in the tournament(s) you need to still complete. You only need to be present for the last wave of the last round in order to unlock the trophy.

Happy Hunting :)

Complete Hell-Burbia, The Angelic Ruins, and The Gully using one character/account. Each challenge must be completed by the same character.

If you are playing with three friends everyone will be rewarded the achievement as just as long as they have been playing through all the same missions.

0
0
After you complete all the first 3 arenas for 5 rounds. The curtain will open, where you will be presented with the same arenas, but with 20 rounds each, the principle remains the same - survive all 20 rounds (100 waves)

For completing a separate arena for 20 rounds you will receive a silver trophy for the corresponding arena. Complete all 3 arenas and the trophy is yours.
If it is very difficult for you to complete everything honestly or you want to get the trophy quickly, then do this:

1 go to split-screen, create a new hero, place him as the main character, load your main character as the 2nd player.
2 run to the 1st city and teleport to The Underdrome
3 enter the arena, all enemies should be level 1-2 (if your main character is lvl 50, it doesn’t matter if the enemies are lvl 10-20 =) )
4 Kill 'em All!!!

An excellent tip, but I want to add: before you enter the game, turn off the Internet connection in the system settings because you can waste two hours of time, because... If suddenly somehow the Internet is accidentally disconnected, you will immediately be thrown into the main menu! This happened to me on round 18 and I had to go through one of the arenas again!

If you want to get a trophy after the first test when it shows at the end of 20 rounds you will be shown a sign from Mad Moxxis when the X glows gray press many times .(do this in multiplayer) after passing the love of the first big test you can get .
