How to unlock the Bobble-Trap achievement in Borderlands - Definitive Guide

Originally there were two issues in relation to getting any of the four collectible achievements linked to the Claptrap DLC.

The first one was a bug that is stopping a number of the collectable achievements:

A: “What a party!”
B: “It’s so realistic”
C: “Bobble-trap”
D: “The Lubricator”

Popping when they are achieved. Gearbox released a patch to fix the problem in late 2010 so this is no longer an issue.

The second issue is that the drop rates for a number of these items are obscenely low.

The best way I have found to deal with this problem is to "actively farm" MINAC - the final boss at the end of the DLC.

Now, many people are getting to MINAC, going to hide in a corner where MINAC and the Claptraps it releases can't get at them, and going away to do something else. After 3-4 hours they come back, kill MINAC and collect a tonne of items from around the area.

This I consider to be "passive farming". I have found, after much testing, that "actively farming" MINAC is immeasurably more rewards and prompts drop rates 3-6 times better than "passive farming" on all items.

"Active farming" involves dying a lot, to be blunt. But you aren't losing money when you do so, and MINAC doesn't return to full health if you do so (unlike Crawmerax) so there's no disincentive in dying.

To "actively farm", you need to shoot out all of MINACs turrets - not his "eye", but everything else. Once that is done, you can attack a bit more confidently.

Follow MINAC when he is on the move, but stay behind it so the "eye" can't get you. When MINAC stops, it will release Divine Wind claptraps - and this is when you attack.

Actively kill the claptraps from close to medium distance. What happens when you do so is that MORE and MORE spawn from MINAC.

For example, if you get in and kill the first tow claptraps to emerge from MINACs doors before those doors close, more claptraps will spawn. If you kill them, 2 more will spawn. And so on.

What happens is that instead of 2 claptraps emerging from the doors every time MINAC stops, 6-8 emerge.

Also, I found that with these extra claptraps emerging (and the greater number of dropped items which naturally appear), actively hunting them down seems to increase the chances for special drops.

In 90 minutes last night, I gathered 10 sets of 3D glasses, 6 Clapfish, 8 pink panties, 6-8 oil cans, 6-8 bobbleheads and 5 pieces of pizza. In just 90 minutes!

Once you're finished farming, kill MINAC and gather the rest of the items. But yes, get out, chase the claptraps and actively farm - its more fun and hugely more profitable.

BusyRich - that's really strange - when I play and die, not only does it not cost me any money to come back to life, but MINAC remains at the health that I left it at.

Maybe I've got a glitch going on there as well. That said, what you say in terms ofselling off items (some of which can be found around MINAC, others through Wayward Pass) is a good one. Also, there's plenty of ammo around the area MINAC spawns, so you'll never be short of bullets.

Good solution. Are your drops from play through 1 or 2?

I am getting ~10 pinks, 6 3D glasses, 8 Clap-fish, 10 oil cans, 5 pizza, and 1 bobble head per 60 minute run on play through 1. Heck of a lot better than trying to do junkyard runs.

The trick I am doing to kill them is load up my lvl 61 soldier with a high dmg, scoped SMG, ammo regen mod and large shield. Take out all the turrets then stand a bit away from the clap trap door as the name pops up, start firing bursts into the opening (usually the center). You should be killing them as they come out, or just before. I net ~10 claps traps per opening. The longer it takes to kill them, the less that spawn each time. When the doors close get ready to move.

If you get run over, you are standing too close. ;)

ADaughen -yep - spot on, great way of killing the claptraps for mine and similar to what I do.

My drops are from playthrough 2 but I don't think it makes any difference (I stand to be corrected though!)

Thanks, bad guys on play through 1 are ~lvl 48. Play through 2 appears to be 61+

I wasn't sure if that would affect drops.

Quick question, if we already killed MINAC, is there a way to make him respawn?

Yes - end the game, go back to Tartarus Station, save or something, then go back through Wayward Pass and all the enemies will be back.

The second character trick works absolutely brilliantly. I put a guest account on, loaded up my game as normal as the main one, and then went to farm the increasingly annoying MINAC.

Prior to this I'd gained just 10 Bobbleheads in as many hours, if not more. With the second account just stood there (and gaining ridiculous amounts of exp, it went from level 1 to 30) whilst I actively farmed the boss, I got the rest of the Bobbleheads in just over an hour. Highly recommended tactic if you're sane and want this done with.

yea this way is better than just waiting, when i farm minac i use a modded shield and one-shot-kill weapon (dont hate f-ing EVERYBODY has a modded "item") and the sec those claptrap come out i keep firing over and over till the door closes, i have a 28 ammo clip on my shotgun and i cant get 10-15 kills (alot of counting and testing to be accurate it was that amount) before minac moves to a differ spot and i manged to complete the lubricator and what a party achievements, so far i dont have the bobbleheads but soon i will with this "active farming" technique

Thanks all for the great advice ! Active farming is the way

I actually have another tip
It won't cost you a lot of bullets. And you can get all 4 related achievements in one go.

First of all, as mentioned , kill all the turrets.

Second. Make sure when the MINAC starts unloading the claptraps that you are positioned next to unloading door. (See picture)

http://www.imagebam.com/image/5b7d29178455764

When you are close enough the claptraps start detonating them selves in the MINAC-bay.
while the MINAC hull is protecting you from the blasts.
Also in that spot the RedEye can't see you and therefor can't hit you.

For the few that didn't detonate I used the Eridian Canon.

Also keep in mind when finished unloading the claptraps the MINAC could turn towards you.
So stay focused and take your time.

It got me all the achievements at the end.

I found the Siren was the best class to be as you can keep up with the boss and actively farm a lot faster. I had no problem getting Boblehead drops, maybe because I was on Playthrough 1? Either way, good solution. Glad I read it before I got to the boss for the first time.

Thumbs up and thanks for the solution. I just wish I could give gearbox a big thumbs down for the achievement. I don't mind grinding but there's no reason for 5 achievements for drops from one mob type... So stupid.

Anyways good guide, thanks!

@YVG: Perfect addition to a great solution, standing on either side makes them explode and can have up to 10 kills or so without using a single billet. The bobble heads & pizza drop rate is so low im wondering who at Gearbox was going through a divorce when they were making this DLC...

I can confirm that the total is for both playthroughs combined.
I was struggling to get bobbleheads to spawn on playthrough one and tried to work through playthrough two to see if that was better - two bobbleheads later and the cheevo popped

Im not sure if theres a diffrence between the GOTYE and the regular edition, half an hour of farming and the only rare item I got was one oil can.

3D glasses, panties, and clapfish come in by the dozen for me... I think I have like 3 pizzas, 2 oil cans, and no bobble heads so far.

For anyone trying to get the collectable achievements just hook a controller up to your xbox without batteries and use a rubber band to make you spin. You won't disconnect. Idle the MINAC battle over night while you sleep. The ground will be covered in crap.

Bloody bobbleheads. It took that long to get the pizzas that I've had my fill of what would've been my favourite game of all time. Still gotta get those bobbleheads. Also need a new disc to finish the DLC because mine has a tiny scratch that's interfering with my progress.

I'll come back to this at some point and pray I get the bobbleheads before I finish everything else.

Thumbs up. I was able to get all collectible sets in just 9 hours using MINAC method. The game seems to only allow around 5 collectibles on the map at a time. So once all 5 are out there, no more will spawn until 1 is picked up, then another 1 random collectible will take its place. If after 15 minutes, you still only find 1 or 2, it either dropped under the map or you're not looking hard enough.

FYI if you kill MINAC he will be in one of the spots where he wa spawning claptraps as he can only be killed in one of the spots he stops in and his shield goes down then. This can prevent you from being able to reach collectibles directly under it. You can warp backwards into wayward pass and return to arid badlands which will make MINAC disappear and allow you to pick stuff up under it.

I agree that this seems to be the quickest way of getting the collectibles. The main downside being the expense involved as you will probably get killed quite a few times, but as long as you have some valuable guns and class mods to sell then you can get the cash back easily enough.

The MINAC 'eye' does return to full health most times you die, but the turrets will remain destroyed. Also worth noting that you will be instantly dead if you accidently get under MINAC's wheels.

I'm getting such low numbers of Bobbleheads... 1 in 2 hours... But this is by far the best (and pretty much only viable) way of doing these horrendous achievements. I hate Borderlands more and more with every passing DLC. First Moxxi's and now this....

Playing on the Xbox One Games With Gold version (has all the DLC for free) and I HAVEN'T SEEN A SINGLE Bobblehead yet. Does anyone know what it takes to get those? My next step will be playing with a second account in splitsccreen and see if that changes anything. If not, I'll finish the other achievements 1st and start a 2nd playthrough and see if that changes anything.

Finished the other collectible achievements, though.

[EDIT] Playing the game via Xbox Live and playing it in Split Screen resolved the issue. Bobbleheads are even more rare than the other collectibles. Took me 3 sessions to farm these.

I have the GOTY version as well. I have started the DLC in my first playthrough near the end of the game when I was level 34. Enemies in the Robo DLC started out between level 29 and 31. I did all the robo parts missions for Tannis farming the equipment in the junkyard. I did some more missions after that (eg retrieving tires for Marcus). So far I got 5 pizzas, 9 bobbleheads, 5 panties, 12 3D glasses and 18 fish pieces and only 7 oil cans (how am I supposed to get 25 from these...)

Edit: Got them all a long time ago.

I tried a few different things tonight:
1. More people means better drops. Problem is, the drops don't share across the board. ADaughen picks up a oil can, it goes against ADaughen's count.
2. Playthrough 2 (lvl 60+ bad guys) seems to have better chances at drops. I had never seen so many bobble heads and oil cans on MINAC.
3. Active farming MINAC on playthrough 2 with a buddy racks up the collectibles fast. Buddy had none and was done in ~3 hours. I ran around and shot the bots (240x4 hellfire) as the spawned and he would scavenge any needed items. 3 hours we dropped 20+ bobble heads, 37 oil cans, and 15+ pizzas along with all the less rare items...
4. Items tend to disappear after a while (not sure if it is a time constraint or amount of loot on the ground). Leaving your game on all night may not rack up the drops like you would expect.

The Hellfire combined with my +60% team magazine size allowed me to take down ~10-12 before having to reload. Buddy went from lvl 10 pistol to lvl 36.

If you are doing this solo, load up a second character and hide them in the bus/rock zone. This should increase your chances at drops. If they have a +2 find rare items that may help even more. Best bet is to have a second person run around and grab what they need and keep the clutter cleared.

Chris8875 has a great solution for finding the collectibles by farming MINAC.

Here is an additional trick to make things easier on yourself while farming:

Delete the Secret Armory of General Knoxxx DLC from your hard drive.

This will reinstate the game's level 50 cap system on the enemies while allowing you to keep a level 61 character/weapons.

Now, tearing through all the bosses en route and destroying the gatling cannons on MINAC will be a cinch. It's just a matter of farming MINAC for the drops.

Thanks for that hint about the Knoxx DLC, I hadn't yet finished playthrough 2 of the main story, so was doing the minac run easy, but when I finished PT2 all the bosses scaled up to 60 with me, and I couldn't beat MINAC, so was a waste of time trying to farm...deleting the knoxx DLC made it so much easier! Now, just crawmerax left to max out this game!

Sheesh, tough crowd. All the neg votes and hardly any comments as to why.

After losing about $70m farming MINAC in single player, I started looking for outside-the-box solutions. I definitely felt less inspired to throw a controller while collecting bobbleheads, et. al.

I'm puzzled why the reception on this solution is so poor- it is unique, and it works.

You're puzzled why this is poor? It's not a unique solution. You said yourself it's a "trick". Only people with the Knoxx DLC can do it, so it's not even a trick everyone can use. It should be a comment on the "Farming the MINAC" solution.

LunchTheft, I'm willing to bet the majority of people have the GOTY edition. If not, TheColonel is still giving a solution to this achievement. There's lots of countless solutions on this site that are "tricks" much more than "actual" solutions. It's still a thought to getting the achievement at hand and it's better than nothing.

The bobble heads will take a while to get them all, they are rather rare and you need a decent amount. So it will be a while before you collect them all.

There are two easy way to get collectibles.

1. In the hyperion dump, north of the entrance. There are quite a few claptraps.
2. Farming MINAC.

For method 1 just go to the hyperion dump, head north and kill all of the claptraps surrounding the fort. Collect any rare-drops and then save and quit. Then resume game and you will be back at the entrance and you can do it again. This is not terribly difficult but rather time consuming. I was only getting 1 or 2 rare drops in a run.

For method 2 go to MINAC and immediately run forwards and to the left. On the left hand side of the road (after the really big rock) there is a smaller rock you can hide behind. From the road looking at the rock there is a red chest to the right of it. From this position you can avoid MINAC and the DW claptraps. Pop out once and a while to destroy all of the turrets. Once you've done that it is relatively safe to go out from your hiding spot. Here is where you have some options. You can either stay in your hiding spot for hours, or you can go out and chase MINAC around killing the DWCTs quickly. The faster you kill them the more of them spawn.

I decided to use a combination. After sitting for awhile I would run out, collect items and chase MINAC around. When I got bored I just went back into hiding and walked away and did something else. I was a little hesitant to leave it over night without testing it first.

On my first run I wasn't close enough to the rock and eventually some DWCT got to me and killed me. If you are situated correctly you could die a lot if you leave it overnight.

Once you've left it run for a while hop out and collect your loot and then kill MINAC. The longer you let it go the more loot there will be. I only had to leave it going overnight (8hrs) to get the remaining items.

He most likely did something of the sort. I'm doing the exact same thing now. I have a rubber band on my analog stick so the game registers that I am moving. Have to say this is one of the most boring achievements to get. I seem to get plenty of claptrap fish but hardly any pizza and I haven't had one bobblehead in over an hour. *sigh*

That order of rarity can't be right. I think the oil-cans, pizzas and bobble-heads are different on each game
I found the 15 pizzas and 25 oil-cans MUCH easier than these damned bobble heads
Since finishing those achievements (all but the bobble-heads), I have found a total of about 17 oil-cans/pizzas together, and about 2 bobble-heads... I only have about 7 overall... 'sigh'...

All the solutions here have good tips. When I was doing my run I came across this little glitch that allows you to be in the open and not take any damage. This passive farming technique is great since you are in the open and that allows the Kamikaze Claptraps to see you and explode faster. I found doing the other safe spots won't net as many Claptraps since they won't always see you to explode and thus you get less drops.

This video is me showing you just how to stand in the right spot for the glitch. I'm not collecting the items since it's pretty obvious what to do when enough time has passed to collect the item drops.

Edit: I did find this glitch on my own. However is seems that there are videos like mine I never came across before posting this solution.

Best way to do this is farming MINAC. There's a hiding place on the map where you won't take any damage and you do not have to destroy any turrets and/or spawning claptraps:

When you enter the combat area go to the small alcove on the far right corner of the map and hide behind the dumpster on the right side. Once hidden, you can go to sleep or do whatever you want. MINAC will kill all spawning claptraps or they will kill themselves by exploding.
Next step: kill MINAC and INAC, then collect the stuff you need.

I farmed for about 9 hours and there were enough panties, Pizzas, bobble heads, clap fishes, oil cans and 3D glasses for all the collecting achievements.

Claptrap bobbleheads are items dropped from claptraps. Unfortunately, the drop rate for this item is extremely low and may require an extended period of time to collect. It varies by luck. The best place to farm for bobbleheads is fighting the MINAC, where there will be endless claptrap spawns until you defeat the MINAC.

Once fighting the MINAC, you will want to take out its turrets to make farming easier. Afterwards, you can do 2 different methods (or combination of both):

1) Active farming. This will require a lot of ammo and different guns. It's best to use the SMG, Assault Rifle and Shotgun. The higher the magazine clip, the better. You simply camp the claptrap spawns and continually shoot into the MINAC where they come out of. This does not increase the drop rate for bobbleheads but you kill more claptraps than method 2 and will typically earn the trophy in at least half the time.

2) Passive farming. This will require a lot of time. All you have to do is find a spot on the map where MINAC and claptraps cannot get to you. Some people prefer the rocks scattered throughout the map but I prefer the small hut. After you found your spot, simply leave the game on for anywhere between 3-10 hours. Afterwards, pick up the parts where MINAC usually stops. For example, right outside the hut is where MINAC will stop sometimes. Once you done this, weaken MINAC until he's almost dead. Wait until he moves to the spot where there are no parts to pick up (outside the hut) and then proceed to kill him. This is important because if you do not pick up the parts where MINAC is killed, you will not be able to collect the parts it is sitting on.

Below is an excellent video detailing both methods. Credit goes to XeoPro.

Other than personally keeping track, there is no way to know how many bobbleheads you have. It is best just to keep farming for until the trophy unlocks.

The choice is yours!

Happy Hunting :)

It is necessary to clarify, we collect figures (Claptrap) this is a small copy of green color. Do not confuse them with figures that give you money. To collect the required amount, you will have to fill up more than one hundred (they come across extremely rarely).

Yes, another thing is that the trophy is buggy if someone thinks that they have put a tr on it. They don’t give the game, it was recently patched and the glitch was removed, you will receive it after entering the game. (03.11.2010)
