How to unlock the The Lubricator achievement in Borderlands - Definitive Guide

Originally there were two isues in relation to getting any of the four collectible achievements linked to the Claptrap DLC.

The first one was a bug that is stopping a number of the collectable achievements:

A: “What a party!”
B: “It’s so realistic”
C: “Bobble-trap”
D: “The Lubricator”

Popping when they are achieved. Gearbox released a patch to fix the problem in late 2010 so this is no longer an issue.

The second issue is that the drop rates for a number of these items are obscenely low.

The best way I have found to deal with this problem is to "actively farm" MINAC - the final boss at the end of the DLC.

Now, many people are getting to MINAC, going to hide in a corner where MINAC and the Claptraps it releases can't get at them, and going away to do something else. After 3-4 hours they come back, kill MINAC and collect a tonne of items from around the area.

This I consider to be "passive farming". I have found, after much testing, that "actively farming" MINAC is immeasurably more rewards and prompts drop rates 3-6 times better than "passive farming" on all items.

"Active farming" involves dying a lot, to be blunt. But you aren't losing money when you do so, and MINAC doesn't return to full health if you do so (unlike Crawmerax) so there's no disincentive in dying.

To "actively farm", you need to shoot out all of MINACs turrets - not his "eye", but everything else. Once that is done, you can attack a bit more confidently.

Follow MINAC when he is on the move, but stay behind it so the "eye" can't get you. When MINAC stops, it will release Divine Wind claptraps - and this is when you attack.

Actively kill the claptraps from close to medium distance. What happens when you do so is that MORE and MORE spawn from MINAC.

For example, if you get in and kill the first tow claptraps to emerge from MINACs doors before those doors close, more claptraps will spawn. If you kill them, 2 more will spawn. And so on.

What happens is that instead of 2 claptraps emerging from the doors every time MINAC stops, 6-8 emerge.

Also, I found that with these extra claptraps emerging (and the greater number of dropped items which naturally appear), actively hunting them down seems to increase the chances for special drops.

In 90 minutes last night, I gathered 10 sets of 3D glasses, 6 Clapfish, 8 pink panties, 6-8 oil cans, 6-8 bobbleheads and 5 pieces of pizza. In just 90 minutes!

Once you're finished farming, kill MINAC and gather the rest of the items. But yes, get out, chase the claptraps and actively farm - its more fun and hugely more profitable.

While actively farming, if you stand next to MINAC's treads, the Claptraps will try to come at you but get caught somewhere and just explode. It's a bit easier than shooting all of them.

Another tip for this is using some high rate of fire weapon (for me, it's a Torgue Anarchy), and posting up in front of the opening on the MINAC. While the solution (great idea by the way) lists 6 to 8 each time, I'm averaging around 11, sometimes up to 15.

Does this even work? I've left my game running for about an hour and every time I check on the drops it seems like things disappear.. I've only gotten 1 oil can in an hours time and I have 5 claptraps coming out of MiNAC every time he stops..

So just to make sure, I can keep killing MINAC over and over again like Crawmerax? It just respawns?

Yes, Porsche. You can kill MINAC, then when you're done farming, save and exit. Just return to Wayward Pass and kill the 3 bosses before MINAC again and he'll be there.

As THEeskEMO explained above - kill MINAC when you are done farming, save and exit the game, then re-enter, head to Wayward Pass and kill the 3 bosses before MINAC again and he'll re-appear.

Yeah, I kept getting killed and losing money, but to regain on the money I lost I just go back and go to the basement room with all the loot crates are at, just pick up all the stuff you can, sell them at the machines, rinse and repeat. Thanks for the guide though, the drops are much better.

Can you increase your chances of rare drops by having a large party? I know it improves other loot, how about these?

Yo can anyone confirm if this is be able to get it with two different playthroughs!? I mean collect like 10 things in pt 1 and the rest in pt 2, will the achievement still unlock or do you really have to collect all in one playthrough!? " FreakOfTheAbyss" already asked this, so I'm curious too, thx.

How do you get the divine wind claptraps to spawn? I've killed all the turrets and the Minac only spawns the kamikaze claptraps.

Great solution for this ridiculous achievement! Had to farm MINAC for almost 10 hours to get everything, if you get bored with active farming, its enough to just stay in the hut or the spot next to the bus, come back after a few hours, for me those sneaky buggers never dropped anything worthwhile while active farming, almost always gears and motherboards. Stick with it, you will get it eventually.

A lot easier with multiple people because there are more bullets to shoot. We just took turns on drops.
Also we were getting achievements when we weren't even picking up that particular item so the whole thing is pretty bugged.

Yeah, standing by the tank tread of the MINAC just makes the claptraps blow up inside so you get more kills. Unfortunately it's more likely that you'll get run over. Contrary to what the guide says, you DO lose money.

Sick of every guide telling me to idle MINAC,
Pretty sure I am not gonna idle for many hours just sitting there idle farming.
I know there are tons of meta players out there,
But how about a simple guide stating where these claptraps spawn in the dlc and where to kill them to farm them,
i rather actually play the game and farm then rather than afk sit idle zzzzzzzzz on the screen for hours and hours..
Not everyone wants the “meta” way of doing things.
Some of use actually play the game and take on its challenges.

The best way to go about things - just to make sure you get the achievement, is try to get the cans in one go.

My understanding is the patch has fixed things and keeps count of items collected properly now - so in theory you should be able to wander off and complete the task another time. But I'm not 100% sure.

I saw someone ask if you collect some of the collectibles on play through 1 and start play through 2 will you get the achievo. Yes, as long as you save before leaving the game. Also be careful to save to the appropriate drive. I felt that the passive farming of MINAC was the best way to get the rare drops. Also using the scavenger character mod made it easier when using the hunter. A bit of luck also played a Hugh part because I rubber banded my controller and left for about 2 hours and came back. I destroyed MINAC and collected everything on the ground and presto the achievos unlocked. Thank you for your comments they really helped me get this game done and over.

Thumbs up. I was able to get all collectible sets in just 9 hours using MINAC method. The game seems to only allow around 5 collectibles on the map at a time. So once all 5 are out there, no more will spawn until 1 is picked up, then another 1 random collectible will take its place. If after 15 minutes, you still only find 1 or 2, it either dropped under the map or you're not looking hard enough.

The oil isn't super rare but you need a lot of them so it will take some time.

There are two easy way to get collectibles.

1. In the hyperion dump, north of the entrance.
2. Farming MINAC.

For method 1 just go to the hyperion dump, head north and kill all of the claptraps surrounding the fort. Collect any rare-drops and then save and quit. Then resume game and you will be back at the entrance and you can do it again. This is not terribly difficult but rather time consuming. I was only getting 1 or 2 rare drops in a run.

For method 2 go to MINAC and immediately run forwards and to the left. On the left hand side of the road (after the really big rock) there is a smaller rock you can hide behind. From the road looking at the rock there is a red chest to the right of it. From this position you can avoid MINAC and the DW claptraps. Pop out once and a while to destroy all of the turrets. Once you've done that it is relatively safe to go out from your hiding spot. Here is where you have some options. You can either stay in your hiding spot for hours, or you can go out and chase MINAC around killing the DWCTs quickly. The faster you kill them the more of them spawn.

I decided to use a combination. After sitting for awhile I would run out, collect items and chase MINAC around. When I got bored I just went back into hiding and walked away and did something else. I was a little hesitant to leave it over night without testing it first.

On my first run I wasn't close enough to the rock and eventually some DWCT got to me and killed me. If you are situated correctly you could die a lot if you leave it over night.

Once you've left it run for a while hop out and collect your loot and then kill MINAC. The longer you let it go the more loot there will be. I only had to leave it going overnight (8hrs) to get the remaining items.

I would just like to add that if you play in co-op every player has to collect the full amount of collectibles. Collecting any of the collectibles does NOT count for all players in the game.

I assume you mean that if I am playing in co-op and I want the achievement, I have to get the right amount of collectibles. It can be interpreted from your post that in order for one player to get an achievement, both (or more) players have to get the right amount of collectibles before the achievement will pop for anyone. Thanks.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Every player collects his own amount of collectibles, these just don't count towards the other players' achievements. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

All the solutions here have good tips. When I was doing my run I came across this little glitch that allows you to be in the open and not take any damage. This passive farming technique is great since you are in the open and that allows the Kamikaze Claptraps to see you and explode faster. I found doing the other safe spots won't net as many Claptraps since they won't always see you to explode and thus you get less drops.

This video is me showing you just how to stand in the right spot for the glitch. I'm not collecting the items since it's pretty obvious what to do when enough time has passed to collect the item drops.

Edit: I did find this glitch on my own. However it seems there are videos like mine I did not come across before posting this solution.

Best way to do this is farming MINAC. There's a hiding place on the map where you won't take any damage and you do not have to destroy any turrets and/or spawning claptraps:

When you enter the combat area go to the small alcove on the far right corner of the map and hide behind the dumpster on the right side. Once hidden, you can go to sleep or do whatever you want. MINAC will kill all spawning claptraps or they will kill themselves by exploding.
Next step: kill MINAC and INAC, then collect the stuff you need.

I farmed for about 9 hours and there were enough panties, Pizzas, bobble heads, clap fishes, oil cans and 3D glasses for all the collecting achievements.

Oil Cans are randomly dropped from Clap-Traps that you kill. There's a lot of grinding involved, so here's what Mad Ibrowz suggests:

"Go fight the Minac and when he appears, just hide behind the rocks near the van...

Where the van is, behind it you'll find a save point and a shed. Whilst standing in the shed facing out, turn immediately right and you'll see a silver crate with weapons in it. Next to this there's 2 rocks with a thin passage in between them. Simply just hide here... When the Minac comes near you and starts to shoot at you, however, he'll only be able to reach you with 1 turret. All you have to do is shoot the turret and once it's gone, you can sit where you are forever without being hit - he won't shoot you, his robots won't, you're safe. At this point, leave the game running (use a wireless controller) and when you come back a few hours later, there'll be a ton of parts all over the place because the Minac accidentally runs over most Claptraps. Simply run out, collect what you can or need and then if you don't have everything, just repeat the process once again."

oil cans are items dropped from claptraps. Unfortunately, the drop rate for this item is extremely low and may require an extended period of time to collect. It varies by luck. The best place to farm for oil cans is fighting the MINAC, where there will be endless claptrap spawns until you defeat the MINAC.

Once fighting the MINAC, you will want to take out its turrets to make farming easier. Afterwards, you can do 2 different methods (or combination of both):

1) Active farming. This will require a lot of ammo and different guns. It's best to use the SMG, Assault Rifle and Shotgun. The higher the magazine clip, the better. You simply camp the claptrap spawns and continually shoot into the MINAC where they come out of. This does not increase the drop rate for oil cans but you kill more claptraps than method 2 and will typically earn the trophy in at least half the time.

2) Passive farming. This will require a lot of time. All you have to do is find a spot on the map where MINAC and claptraps cannot get to you. Some people prefer the rocks scattered throughout the map but I prefer the small hut. After you found your spot, simply leave the game on for anywhere between 3-10 hours. Afterwards, pick up the parts where MINAC usually stops. For example, right outside the hut is where MINAC will stop sometimes. Once you done this, weaken MINAC until he's almost dead. Wait until he moves to the spot where there are no parts to pick up (outside the hut) and then proceed to kill him. This is important because if you do not pick up the parts where MINAC is killed, you will not be able to collect the parts it is sitting on.

Below is an excellent video detailing both methods. Credit goes to XeoPro.

Other than personally keeping track, there is no way to know how many oil cans you have. It is best just to keep farming for until the trophy unlocks.

The choice is yours!

Happy Hunting :)

So, the drop includes things for trophies

It's so realistic!(red-blue 3d glasses)

What a party! (pizza, pink panties and fish in a bag)

Bobble-trap(robot figures)

The Lubricator(red oil cans)

begin to drop from kleptropes after killing them after completing the first Tennis quests.

however, in order not to lose half your life in searching for them, I recommend starting to complete Mr. Black’s quests after the first quest - i.e. It is not necessary to complete all the quests, but it is enough to turn in the first quest Tennis and everything to Mr. Black. After this, you can get to the Arid Badlands location where you need to kill a huge cleptrope according to the quest.

Don’t kill him (just shoot off all his guns), because something tells me you’ll have to go to him more than once.

Now the main thing is to stock up on a really good weapon (preferably an explosive machine gun or an SMG with a large weapon)

When the big robot approaches one of the three points, it stops and releases kleptrope kamikazes on you. If you immediately aim at his door at the moment of stopping and start shooting at the moment it opens, you can kill up to 20 kleptropes.

Next, we either hit the small stuff and when the big one moves away we collect the drop (if anyone hasn’t read the initial instructions, hold down the button collect all the same type of things within sight) or run to a new point and repeat the shelling of the little things. But be careful! if there is a lot of drops under the robot, it can drive it through textures or into the air while driving...

For help in obtaining and finding a way to really easily obtain these trophies, thanks to Valentapl
