The scythe is one of the not obvious characters you find. To start talking to him you must solve the riddle you get at your home later in the story. A piece of paper with some numbers flipped in certain spots. When the game asks you to input the numbers, pick the first three numbers from left to right that are right side up. I’m not sure if it changes but in my case the first number was 2 then the next number was upside so skip that one and put the next two right side up numbers.
If you mess it up you just have to try again in one day which I believe is just one run to the dungeon.

This only happens if you talked to him first at his house, which is north of town. I can also confirm that even if you get it wrong his raven will show up to input his number into your phone for you.

Beyond that, you have to have a good interaction with him at the party or you won't be given a shot at all. Playthrough 2 here I come!
The most important thing is not his number, its actually getting the character to talk with you! If you act uninterested and blow them off, you NEVER see them again and have to start the game over. This achievement is MISSABLE!
