Even though it's very early on, you still should have way more than enough to be able to buy an upgrade. I had about 850 coin on me when I came across the merchant stone.

The stone can be located right after that little fight with all the wolves. Simply go up to it and press , then go to upgrades and purchase one. I'd advise getting dodge right away if you started on 'Hero difficulty'.
