How to unlock the No Retreat achievement in Broken Age - Definitive Guide

In Vella's part of Act 2, she must use the Central Control Sphere to lure the Maintenance Robot from the Hallway to the door of the Control Room. You do this by overcharging lights and switches to make it travel across the rooms. The robot will repair any overcharged switch as long as it is close enough and the switch is in darkness. If the light is on above an overcharged switch, the Robot will believe that everything is fine and will not fix the switch.

You must lure the Robot to the door without it turning back once. This means that you need to hit the correct sequence and with near-perfect timing. This video shows the sequence performed flawlessly.

Even after watching the video, I still did it incorrectly a few times. You should do manual save when Vella have access to the control sphere (after she meets a lady, she put the sphere on her head and can view the area in the ship via camera).

Like almost every achievement in this game, even if you do this flawlessly it may still decide to simply not pop. A humble word of warning, as this can get more than frustrating to try over.

Commenting to add that the end of the video is not when it should pop - enter the kitchen, change the message on the monitor until you can use the hand to grab the Hexigal, then have her fix the door and wait for the cut scene. It's also possible to save during different parts of this puzzle. Got this quicker than expected (after reading the YouTube comments).

Vella Act 2

While this trophy is based on an unmissable storyline event, it is perfectly possible not to complete this puzzle correctly on your first attempt, therefore the trophy itself is missable.

Once Vella has been locked inside the Control Room with Shay's Mom, she must find a way to unlock the door. Make a MANUAL SAVE here. If you fail this trophy on your first attempt, you can reload the save to try again.

During the bit where Vella is getting the robot to repair the ship, never let the robot go backwards.

Do a manual save before you do this section.

This trophy can be earned in Vella Act 2. Once you have been locked in the room with Hope, you have to interact with the helmet device on the ceiling which will give you a different view of the ship. You should also aim to get "Turn that frown upside down" at this point.

If you look around the ship you will notice lots of icons, the arrows move you around the ship. The gears turn off lights and the lightning bolts short out circuits.

Each of these things will cause the Hexigal to move towards them to fix the issues that you cause. In this trophy you need to get all of the way to the door, without the Hexigal ever turning back. This means clicking on the right icons in the right order to cause the robot to keep moving. You do have a bit of time as you move between rooms but follow this video and you should be able to get it without issue:

MISSABLE

Vella - Act Two

While on the security camera and finishing Turn That Frown Upside Down (25G)  (manual save before attempting) you need to guide the little fixer bot to the control room door in the dark and without turning back, meaning you have to be quick going from left to right. There are three rooms that count and I will do quick points that will start from left going right.

Room one:

  • Left bolt then quick light sign
  • Seconds after top right bolt then the bolt under that.
Room two:

  • Left side bolt then left light sign.
  • Seconds after central bolt.
  • Seconds after just right of centre bolt then light switch.
  • Then right most bolt.
Room three (this has to be done quick)

  • bottom right
  • Next to door with lock sign
  • Bottom centre
  • Top centre
  • Top right
  • After the bot starts to climb down click the left most bolt.
Now from here is fine: press the bolt in the center then enter the kitchen and use the sign bot to say something about tacos and use the arm sign to save fixer bot. Go back into the hall and press the center bolt again.

If done correctly it will unlock during the cut scene.

The trophy is easy to miss and screw up. I recommend saving before proceeding.

Once you have control of the ship and are viewing the rooms through the security cameras, head to the far right compartment. You need to bring the hexagon robot to its compartment. Click on the zipper next to the robot, the robot goes there for repairs, click on the next zipper and so on until the end. The only additional factor you need to keep an eye on is the light (gears). The light should be turned off when the robot finishes one lightning bolt and moves on to another. In principle, everything is simple - we point to the lightning, then to the light, to another lightning, to another light, and so on almost until the end, until a small incident occurs. The incident can also be solved very simply by switching the board to the Taco Pill Tuesday point and then activating the claw.

The previous link no longer works. Here is a better video "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHPQfr_Rt5Q".

I will only add that you need to complete the task in one gulp - without stopping or interrupting the hexipal (except when he moved to another room). Actually, I only found this video: https://youtu.be/4fx4Q5me3zU. For some reason, the author does not have a cursor on the video, but the order of (de)activation is, in principle, clear.

Just press the switches in the order shown in the pictures and you'll get through without any problems.
