Smashes are destructible chain-link fences with yellow lights and signs on them which mark shortcuts in Paradise City. They glow faintly and are fairly noticeable at night.
There are 400 smashes spread throughout the game, and you should have no trouble finding 25 of them. Just keep an eye out on the sides of the road, and if you see a yellow sign on a chain link fence, drive through it!
A couple notes:
-These shortcuts may take you in an unexpected direction, so don't explore them if you're in a race.
-Unless it leads to a jump, there are usually 2 smashes in each shortcut (one on each end). Be sure to get them both!
-If you intend to get all smashes, more thorough solutions for finding them all can be found here:

Similar to the billboard collectibles but these are yellow gates which fence off shortcuts. Just smash though 25 of these and your first achievement for the smashes will unlock. Just remember once you go though one gate follow the path to the other side as there is always a 2nd gate to smash though.
