You will be given a ’Big Small Potion’ by Autumn for finding her cat Char, a black cat who can be found wondering around the clothing and general store.
Hit your back button to bring up the potion tab and press X on an animal that is not a bird and press Y to mount.

Hello, ladies and gents. Today we are looking at the Giant Rider achievement in Calico. This is for riding on a giant animal. It's not marked as Story-Related, but you have to do this in order to progress the Story.
Below are the text explanations to get this Achievement. If you prefer, at the bottom of the solution are a full video Achievement Walkthrough and a link to a Bulleted Text Achievement Walkthrough as well, either of which will get you your completion in less than 3 hours.
NOTE: The game is still rather glitchy, so its not a bad idea to make a Save right before finishing anything that will pop an Achievement so that you can reload if an Achievement doesn't pop correctly.
You will get a quest to open up the Island from Mayor Kiva after setting up your Cafe. After you've set up your Cafe, head into town and find Maia's Treehouse to introduce yourself to Maia. You will automatically progress this Quest and she recommends visiting Autumn on her Mountain. Before you do, however, head into town. Check your Map, and there is a building marked "Community Center" in town. On the back of this is a deck, and there is usually a Black Cat here. If they aren't there, run around the buildings and you will eventually find Char. Pick up Char with X and place them on your head with B.
Now, return to the Cafe and pretend you are heading back into town. At the 4 way crossroad, turn right(South on the map), head down some stairs and across the bridge. Keep following the path allllll the way up the Mountain and inside the building at the top to talk to and introduce yourself to Autumn. Autumn will help you, but she misses her cat, Char. Luckily, we already saved Char. Press B to grab Char from your head and talk to Autumn (Is this your Char) to advance the Quest. Autumn will tell you to come back tomorrow.
Return to the Cafe and sleep in your bed, grab Calico from your Cafe and place them on your head, then return to Autumn and ask about the potion. After some silly dialogue, you are given the 'Bigify' (Big Small) potion. Autumn calls it the Bigify Potion but in your Potion Inventory it is the Big Small Potion. You now need a small non-Bird animal. We grabbed Calico for this reason. Pull them off your head or pick them up, and use the Big Small potion from your Potion Inventory (you can get there using the View/Back/Select button). This unlocks the Giant Rider achievement!
