How to unlock the BLACK OP MASTER achievement in Call of Duty: Black Ops - Definitive Guide
1. Be prepared to die. A lot. This goes without saying.
2. Look at your surroundings, look for where the enemy might flank you from. Don't just rush in head first. Experiment in trying out different hiding spots where you can take out the enemy. If you're dying a lot and keep going to the same place, it's probably time to change where you're hiding.
3. At certain points in the game, the enemy will endlessly spawn. A prime example is in the level SOG when you're pushing the NVA back down the hill, the enemy will constantly spawn at the bottom and run to the nearest cover. When you encounter parts like these in the game, kill as many enemies as you can then run forward to the next piece of cover before they can spawn again. Rinse, repeat.
4. Practice makes perfect. It's all about knowing where your enemy is going to be, and in what order you should kill them and where the best place to take cover is.
5. Smoke grenades and Flash Grenades are your best friend. Since the AI on your side is generally useless (no change from other CoD games then..), use your equipment where you feel is necessary. Clearing rooms or getting down corridors is where you'll need them most.
6. Having trouble on a certain part of a level and want to spare yourself the price of buying a new control pad? No problem. Press pause during the game and change the difficulty lower to get through the level. Once you've familiarised yourself with everything in that level, retry on Veteran.
7. Weapon of choice really comes down to your level of play style. But try to generally stick to a close range weapon like an SMG or Shotgun and also a long/medium range Assault Rifle, preferrably with a Grenade Launcher attachment.
Hope these tips help you guys, and Good Luck.
1. First Part: (Executive Order) The toughest part is where you come in and to the right is this office space. (End of Mission) Then you have to make it down this corridor that reminds me of the Mission in No Fighting In War Room. Then you make a left to the door that ends the mission. This part was DEFINITELY the hardest in the game. Tips for that part:
First things first, come around the corner and chuck 2 grenades into the office space. Quickly go into prone. There will be some guy to your right, blast him. Crawl left and keep crawling. Pop up right and shoot 1 - 5 enemies around the bend of this stove you are crawling behind. Gaze left and dive underneath this other rectangular structure. Pop up here and there to take out the rest of the enemies in the room. Listen to what your AI say. Typically during that part they might shoot out something like "Behind the Table." That indicates that you look in the back of the room and there is some guy hiding beneath a table, simple.
The second part of this section is a bit more difficult. Now you will see a lengthy corridor. Take out all enemies within about 10 yards. Then throw a flashbang into the room. On the left side, there is a box run behind there and prone. Take out the nearest enemies then move up behind some kind of small vehicle. Again, take out. There is a small opening in the wall to your left. Take more out. Advance. To your right is a room, in front of you is a hallway. Look right into the room and take out 1 - 2 guys and then sprint into the room. Go to the end and prone. A few guys have shottys, so stay back a bit and pick your shots. Clear the room. You now have corridor and office done. You might get a checkpoint now. Take out 1 - 4 enemies behind some more vehicles. The rest is cake, but take your time if you didn't get a checkpoint. Once you are at the door at the end of the hallway the mission is over. THIS PART IS AS DIFFICULT ON HARDENED. Follow those steps and you got that part out of the way, probably the hardest part.
Rebirth Tank: Round the corner to the right. Grenade launch the two vehicles, then switch to the turrets to take out the guy out. The turret guy will down you about 40 % of your health, but no worries. Now, you will have 4 -6 seconds that your health will be regenerating. While doing so start your aim at the guy in the corner left on a little balcony. After hes done, switch right and take out the RPG's and additional enemies/trucks. For the rest of the way, zoom in and nade the from one side to another. You'll get a checkpoint once you exit the tank.
THE BARREL ONE IS EASY JUST KNIFE THE BARRELS AND BE PATIENT!
That part took me a half an hour to complete, and the tank took me 5 min. I found some videos that could help you through it. Here are videos for each of them, they are not mine. The first video is the one with knocking the two barrels down the hill, the second one is the tank sequence on Rebirth, the 13th mission. VOTE POSITIVE, COMMENT IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS. YOU CAN ALSO MESSAGE ME FOR ANY QUESTIONS WITH THE VETERAN CAMPAIGN, I WILL HELP! THANKS!
1. the last corridor in the level "executive order", this is definitely the hardest part of the game, this is one of the few parts where the enemies are infinitely re-spawning and there is a serious lack of checkpoints, it is easier if you save the smoke grenades for this part.
2. the part just after getting through the nova gas on "rebirth", there are many enemies on the buildings that be hard to shoot before they shoot you first, they'll also often flank you without you realizing if you stay in one spot for a long time
there is only one part where you're timed, but you get just as much time as the other difficulties so it's not exactly challenging
If you get a patch when you've got your game saved half way through a level it glitches the achievement counter for that level after going on and completing it after the patch.
So to simply get around this you have to think when you may have patched when you had a level saved half way through.
I worked this out after I got up to SOG in December then left the game until a day ago, just after a patch. Then I didn't get the achievement for completing SOG and The Defector on veteran.
I've tested my theory and I believe I am correct. Could be a coincidence though. Comment if anyone wants to expand on this.
Now I don't know if there's a way, or I'll have to do them again without saving...
If you have any suggestion...
This solution helps fix one of the "glitches" that causes the achievement not to unlock. It is not really a glitch. If you entered the "3ARC UNLOCK" cheat in the terminal, it erases all of your campaign progress. That means if you have done any missions on veteran prior to entering the code, you will have to redo them on Hardened or Veteran. For example, I did Operation 40, Vorkuta, U.S.D.D. (which counts), and Executive Order on Veteran and later on entered the code not knowing the consequences. After I completed the other missions, I soon figured out all of this and went back and did those missions on Hardened (because I had already gotten the veteran achievement for those missions) and the achievement unlocked after I finished. Apparently there are actual "glitches" with this achievement, but this is a solution to the problem I experienced.
I would appreciate feedback, good or bad, in addition to the votes so I can improve my future guides.
I beat this on Hardened when I was around 9-10 or so a few years ago.
Overall, this is something cool to have on your profile.

Intel Locations:
To check how much intel you have found for each level, go to the Main Menu > Campaign > Intel. It will show you how many pieces of intel you have found for each level that you have completed. Try to get them all in the missions while you can. Don't get distracted.
I did most of the in game achievements while I went thru each veteran mission. Also collected most of the Intel Items along the way as well. Only had to go back and collect 3 as I got distracted during a few of the missions. Try and get them all while you're on Veteran. Only one that you might be able to do on veteran is Project Nova to get the last intel however if you're doing the Light Foot on veteran, you'll have to skip the last intel near the end, depends how much time you have left on t he clock.
The ones marked Redo on Recruit just have to go back and redo as they are too hard on Veteran. There were only a few. Otherwise, MOST of the achievements CAN be done on Veteran. I used all the walk thru videos an achievement guides to help. I used Pause ALOT.
15 Missions:
Operation 40 - Done. Death to Dictators - Done. - Intel Done.
Vorkuta - Done and Intel Done. Slingshot Kid - Done.
Vehicular Slaughter <- Redo both on Recruit. Seems that you have to get specific vehicle while on the Bike AND on the back of the truck. I recommend recruit for this one.
U.S.D.D - Intel None - Done
Executive Order - Unconventional Warfare - Done and Done, Intel Done. Save frag and smoke grenades for last section of mission. Horrendous mission on Veteran. Spent over an hour just in this last section. There is no CP after entering the last section and the ending at the end of the hallway. So if you die, you start all over at the entrance to this section. Pick up a grenade launcher AK to take out first section. Then use grenades in hall way to move forward. Smoke help you to move forward. Once you're in the control room near the end of the hallway on the right, theres places to hid.
Try Sally Likes Blood. Recruit
S.O.G. - Tough Economy - Done and Intel Done
The Defector - The Dragon Within, Raining Pain - Done, Done and Intel Done
Try Frag Master on this level. (Do on Recruit) Might be able to do on Veteran if you're good enough.
Numbers - Done. Intel Done.
Double Trouble - Redo this on Recruit - Done
Project Nova -. Done. Intel Done.
Light Foot - Too hard for me on veteran. Good Luck
Victor Charlie - Up Close and Personal, Heavy Hand - Done, Done and Intel Done
Crash Site - Lord Nelson - Done and Done, and Intel Done.
Be careful on Lord Nelson on Veteran. Theres no CP from when you start to the last section. I kept hitting hit by rockets near the 2nd section so be sure to take out land rockets as fast as you can. Be sure to take out all buildings, even if they look destroyed, hit up a few times to be sure. Took me a while but I did this on veteran.
WMD - Mr Black Op, Pathfinder - Done, Done and Intel Done
Payback - Done. With Extreme Prejudice: Done and Intel Done.
Russian Bar-B-Q - Needs done on Recruit
Rebirth - I hate monkeys - Done, No Leaks - Done, Done and Intel Done. Horrendous Mission. No Leaks was pretty easy to get thru on veteran. Just take it slow and be sure you kill ALL enemies as you move forward. I made it with out any cracks in suit. Tank section took over an hour to get thru on Veteran alone. You gotta be on target and quick to take out enemies in this section. Turn the gun mount as fast as you can and get them quickly as possible. You gotta be QUICK. There is NO CP between when start first section in the tank and after you get near end after taking out last section of enemies after passing large warehouse building on the left. So if you die, you start back the beginning when you get in the tank. 3+ hours on 1 mission cuz I kept dying, even soon as I spawned in with tank. I have never hated any mission as much as this one. And I hate One Shot on MW2.
Revelations - None and Intel Done.
Redemption - Done. Intel done.
Double Whammy - Redo on Recruit - Done.
To round off the campaign, there are achievements that do not relate to any specific mission but must be done during the campaign and those are: "Closer Analysis", "Frag Master", and "Sally Likes Blood". All these can be done on Veteran accept maybe for Frag Master.
Over all, BO1 is ok. Not my favorite Campaign and has horrendous check points. Ai are mostly useless. Enemies will get by and Ai just do nothing. So glad BO1 is done for me. Never again.
You need to finish the game on Hardened or Veteran.
I suggest veteran, as you will get the Veteran achievements along the way.
The only mission I really had trouble with was Executive Order. But other than that, doing this game on veteran isn't difficult at all. Throw grenades back and stay behind cover always as you'll need this as much as possible.
On stealth levels, try and make sure you never get caught, unless it's scripted.
I recommend NextGenTactics or mattie432 for video walkthroughs on Youtube.
This trophy is much easier to get than World at War's was. There is occasional infinite spawning, but the grenade spam is really kept to a minimum (however when they do it, they do it to an extreme).
A few simple steps to get through this:
1. Patience. Take it slow, seriously. Unless there's a timer there's really no need to try and rush anything. I know I got a little heated at times when I kept dying at certain points.
2. Cover. Cover is your friend. It will save your life. Be sure to always hit cover whenever you're in a hot zone.
3. Prone. Going prone will save your life as much as cover will. When you go prone, you'll be able to avoid enemy fire for the most part. However, they may then shower you (on the rare occasion) with grenades.
4. Smoke & Grenades. Smoke can get you through corridors very nicely. Occasionally you will get lit up because that's just how AI works at times. Grenades are you friend to flush enemies out. You can either cook or not cook a grenade to kill them or make them run out.
5. Keep moving. If you're at one of those infinite spawn points, you need to keep moving forward. If you're not at one of those points, staying and waiting to kill everyone is the better option.
NOTE: The Veteran trophies are glitched. You may or may not get them when you play through. Currently, I don't believe there is any knowledge on why this is so. Just be cautioned on it, that it may happen to you.
Here are also some other tips for you guys at two specific points in the game that were the most challenging/problematic:
Executive Order
In 'Executive Order' there will be a point where you come to a scientific room with a guy that flips over the table and you have to fight your way into the room. If you don't move into the room, the guys will continuously spawn. What I did was go into the room and go to the right behind a tall block of science equipment. You'll know what I'm talking about because if you don't go in, a guy will always go there and stand behind it. While there, just kill whoever and soon you'll have no more enemies spawning for that part. But there will be no more checkpoint.
As soon as you're ready, make your way to the next hallway and have a smoke grenade in hand. Once you reach the mouth of the hallway from the room you're in, chuck it and make a dash for cover. The smoke is to help you not get hit by the dudes far away. While there, make your way up to the part where there is the semi-circle room. A guy will be in there shooting you, shoot him, cook a grenade and run into the room and throw it to the other end. You'll kill a few guys but not all and make your way the long way around to the other door, don't cut through. Once there, you should get a checkpoint soon so don't die.
S.O.G.
In 'S.O.G.' where you need to make your way down the hill. From the start I always went to the left cover and killed the guys to the far right inside a bunker. Once you have a clearing, go to the 2nd level tier (you start on the 1st). Woods will be there, so go prone and start shimmying your way down to the 3rd tier. You will need to kill people but once you're there, Woods will come down and kick over a napalm barrel.
After he's kicked it over, you need to kick the one over that's to the right of the bunker you're at. Stay prone and keep a watchful eye to the bunker to your right. Two guys will constantly come up and shoot you. As you get to the barrel and kick it over, make sure you go prone immediately and don't stand up to try to run away. When you kick it over and are prone, back all the way back to the bunker you were at while shooting people that are trying to kill you. When you reach the bunker, you should get a checkpoint and then you need to go kick the third barrel over. The third barrel is at the bunker you kept a watchful eye on while you did the second barrel. Go over there and do the exact same prone manoeuvre that you did for the second barrel.
You must complete the following levels on Hardened or Veteran difficulty:
- Operation 40
- Vorkuta
- U.S.D.D
- Executive Order
- S.O.G.
- The Defector
- Numbers
- Project Nova
- Victor Charlie
- Crash Site
- WMD
- Payback
- Rebirth
- Revelations
- Redemption
Here are some tips to help you get past the levels on Hardened or Veteran difficulty:
-
Always be in cover and never be out in the open. It will only get you killed.
-
Holding down will put your character into a prone position. You will lie down on the ground and it will put you out of harm’s way if you are behind a piece of cover.
-
If your team moves up or screams "Clear!", it is safe to move up as the enemy threat has been eliminated.
-
Make use of flashbang grenades and smoke grenades. They can help you get out of a hard situation.
-
Never run around a corner. The enemy will be aiming at the location and kill you within mere seconds.
- Before entering a new area, be sure to have your weapon reloaded and ready for the next encounter with the enemy. You don't want to get caught with no ammo in your gun in a fire fight.
-
It is recommended that you mark down which missions you have completed on Veteran to use as a checklist. The game has no way of telling you which mission you have completed on which difficulty.
