How to unlock the Scorched Earth achievement in Call of Duty: World at War - Definitive Guide

So far, World at War on Veteran difficulty hasn't been all that hard. It's had it's difficult moments, don't get me wrong, but this level is an entire grind of hard enemies raining down all over the place. I hate this level. Although, this level is the shortest level in the game, it will probably take the longest to manage. Your mission is to clear out 3 teams of enemy (Japanese) mortar teams. That's it. On the easiest difficulty, I can finish this level in about 2 minutes with the flame thrower. However, on Veteran, it's an entire different story.

You start out with the flame thrower and a Garand, which is a pretty good combo, if you ask me. Your first task will be to get past an elevated bunker with some high caliber mounted machine guns in it. SGT Roebuck offers the 'use smoke here' idea, and you end up with a checkpoint halfway through the mad smoky dash down the trench, only to turn the corner to face the first mortar crew.

This little area will piss the Pope off, if he ever played it. If you haven't earned your Purple Heart achievement yet, you will here. There is little cover, and you are flanked by enemies above you and in front of you. My only advice is to flame the guys right in front of you and hide in the small cover to the right of the entrance to the first mortar pit. Slowly move and flame, and spam your grenades. What upset me most about this area is that you won't get a checkpoint until you are almost to the next mortar crew. So, failure results in a long replay of the same crap over and over again.

Once you manage to get to the cover of the crates in the first pit, focus to the left of you for Banzai attackers. Then slowly flame the room until the "Objective Completed" pops up. Then backtrack and turn left. Here you have a short but brutal grind in which you have a plethora of enemies overhead. Again, be careful because you won't hit a checkpoint until after this area. Once you hit that checkpoint, take a breather. You still have a few corners to turn until you must make an uphill move to the next crew. Your men will take care of most of them, just stay low and wait until you have a clear. If you wait long enough, Roebuck will clear that pit for you.

Checkpoint.

Now, you have another grind that's gonna piss you off. You will follow the path into a large, well occupied area, and my best advice is to smoke it out and get to the wall on the other side. The allies will mop up the dudes standing directly on top of you. From here, you have a brutal winding right turn that is flanked by a machine gun pit to the right. Flame that pit and smoke the next clearing, again, getting in cover on the opposite wall. You should get a checkpoint around here.

Now comes the fun part. The final grind, the area that may make you toss your controller through you screen. Once that area is clear, you have a nest/cave to the left to clear and then a tunnel ahead of you to clear. Halfway through this tunnel, prep a grenade and a aim to the backside of the open part of it, then toss a smoke. Wait for it to billow and then stay to the right with your flame thrower ready. You will face about 5 banzai attackers in a row, so be patient and don't overheat your flamer. Once that is done, toss another smoke into the next pit to the right of you and wait again. Flame the 3-5 guys there and then find cover. You are now outside the last pit, and almost done. You will get assaulted by numerous banzai attackers and grenades. Just be patient and spam your nades into the pit. At the time you feel best, rush it and flame the stragglers, and wait for Roebuck to say it's clear.

Mission over. As easy as this guide seems, this is a rough mission. Good luck and be patient. Watch the video for a map of what to expect at least, of it's your first play-through.

Yeah, no way. It's just an example so you can get a visual layout of the map, mostly.

I spent over an hour on the last checkpoint! For me, I stayed on the left side of the tunnel and it seemed to work as long as 3-4 grenades didn't land at my feet before then.

Actually, I'll agree with you on this one. This level sucked the worst. I bet I tried 1000 times too. Just keep at it, and pray on a little luck too. You'll find that right combination and get that next checkpoint...just to have another 1000 goes and more prayers. You can do it!

At least the pope would have miracles to get him through this level if he played it. Unlike me. This last checkpoint is ridiculous. Most of the time I can't see the enemies that are brutally murdering me in milliseconds every time I poke my head out of cover laugh

I made it through the whole level using only the flamethrower on veteran just to realize the last cave was nearly impossible.

The best part about this level is the only advantageous cover spots are always occupied by the NPCs and every time you need to back out of conflict or into cover they block you and DEAD!

Great guide, although I did hit a checkpoint after I cleared the first crew, and another just before the second crew (in the small alcove).

Definitely helped me through all but the very end of this mission. I finished up using KiwiLords solution since it was easier for me, personally.

This mission is possibly the hardest mission i have played since D-day on call of duty 2, there is little cover and the enemies attack you from every angle, all i can really say it take it one enemy at a time and when all else fails spam the flamethrower and smoke,

the flame thrower is a must while storming the mortar pits and bunkers it just lays waste to everything. and be careful as just about every corner has a banzai enemy round it or a mg nest, also watch for the cave at the end of the mission i found it best to throw all my smoke and grenades in then follow them in with my flamethrower just spraying it everywhere

Nice solution, the same way I did (at the last tunel).
Throw in Smoke grenades, and follow with the flamethrower

Haha just completed this, took me about 2 hours, i just throw a tons of smoke & followed in with the flamethrower & there is a little cave on the map somewhere near the last mortar group which has 8 Grenades & 8 Smoke in there which u can always run back in & grab a few rinse & repeat, has been the toughest level so far, second hardest was vendetta because of the crazy 1 shot sniper guy. :)

Deep explanation of the final mortar pit:

The last checkpoint in the mission is the one just before going into the tunnel in front of you, and the small pit to the left of you. Slowly walk into the smaller pit with your flamethrower and just burn them, walk out and take your other weapon and take out the single japanese walking on the ledge above you. This one is easily missed and may kill you.

Now that is done, go into the burned out pit, take the four smoke grenades off one of the Japanese's bodies and switch your flamethrower to the Type 99. You should now have two automatic weapons (most preferably the Type 99 and BAR, but the Thompson is a good weapon too).

Now, be very careful going into the tunnels, once a Japanese with a Type 99 sees you, you are dead in a matter of 0.2 seconds, no doubt. Don't peek the corner at the end of the tunnel, but throw a smoke grenade there. Cook off your grenades and throw them further into the pit. Now spray your Type 99 empty on the end of the pit (which is invisible because you smoked it). If you still have time left, switch to the second gun before reloading and spray your .45 through the hole in the ceiling.

Your enemies won't respawn so just walk back into the tunnel to reload your weapons and go for a second run: Throw another smoke into the same place as before and immediately throw another one further into the pit. Now advance a little while throwing grenades and spraying your enemies without seeing them. You may die here because of grenade spam, but it's a matter of luck here. Take cover once you're hit behind a barrel or crate, and move on.

When this pit/bunker is clear, you have to move on to the mortar pit. The only strategy here is corner peeking. Use your Type 99 and slowly, really slowly move around the corner shooting anything that moves (even if it's a plant, better safe than sorry). Once everything is cleared by peeking, throw four grenades picked off dead enemies and throw them spreaded across the mortar pit (over the crate). Now slowly advance and if you've done it right, only one or two more banzai attackers will rush you, but they shouldn't be much of a threat (be careful to always have your weapons reloaded).

Now your commander should say something like 'Outstanding' and you know you're done. Congratulations.

Just what I was looking for. I had been stuck trying to use the Flamethrower and another auto-weapon, and equipping two did the trick. (On the first time I tried it, at that.)

There are more than a few grind points in this mission, but I'll quickly go over the easiest way for me. It may seem quick but add in a million restarts and you may get a feeling for how this mission was to complete.

Round the first corner, smoke grenade landing half way up the hill to the first pit. When the smoke sets in rush and flame throw everything. You should get most guys. *CP*

Back down from the pit, take out the couple of guys outside the trenches and throw a smoke grenade under the bridge so it set off in the little dogleg. Same again rush forward and flame throw the MG to the left and round the corner to the right, if there is anything left throw a little flame into the indent on the left, just in case, and run in.*CP*

Wait for your flame thrower to cool down, and take out a couple of Kamikaze guys who will be rushing you. Rush down the trenches and flame throw the 5-6 guys like crazy and drop a smoke grenade in the middle of the next corner, then rush back to you indent to wait for the smoke to start (you will die if you don't get back round the corner). Then rush back in, clear the guys above you, keep to the left and keep in cover. Again, smoke and flame-thrower. Keep to the left and go prone behind the boxes in the corner. *CP*

Wait for your flame-thrower and rush the nest to you left, just flame throw everything. If you wait here for a bit your guys should clear the next mortar pit for you. Just run up and finish up the stragglers. *CP*

3 sniper in the trees that may be a worry, immediately to your left (flame-thrower is just fun here) switch weapons the snap to the other 2. One to the left and one to the right. You can wait out this bit and pick of the guys on the ridge, after about 3 minutes they'll stop re-spawing. Or throw smoke and rush in with the flame thrower again. Pull back to behind the barrels on the left as a few guys will rush you at this point. Wait for the flame thrower and move forward down the trench. *CP*

Ok, coming up to 2 pretty tough bits. Rush round the corner and flame throw the guys coming out of the nest on the right and run into the nest still firing. Pick up the gun, and there should be a stock of smoke grenades in here too. Move out of the nest and take out the gunner above left, he'll spawn a couple of times before you get a real chance to throw down some smoke. Wait for the smoke and rush in with the flame-thrower, get all the way to the far wall (underneath the gunners). *CP*

Ok, now the nightmare, or so you thought. Clear the nest to your left, more smoke here but you won't need it if you stocked up in the last nest. Let you guys clear the tunnel then rush down first (otherwise your team will alert the gunners in the tunnel) look 45 degrees to your right and throw a smoke grenade through to pit where you see the next section open up. Run back and wait for the smoke. When you move forward 1 guy might run out of the smoke, this is pretty random. Move forward into the smoke and go crazy with the flame-thrower. Make sure you cover a good 120 degree spread. Keep to the left of the smoke and go prone. Switch to your gun in case you missed someone. When your team joins you just hang back and wait for then to stop firing (not too far back there are still guys above than can get you) and move to the pit for your achievement. WOO! Slog!

First solution. Let me know if this helped.

Hope this video helps out anyone still needing this very difficult achievement, even the best strategies will need repeated attempts! I take no credit for the video, just thought I'd share it since it helped me out quite a lot.

Save the smoke grenades for the end, it's more difficult there. If you collect 13 cards along the way, as I do, then be careful when you take a card. I accidentally changed the weapon instead of the map and because of this the flamethrower disappeared without a trace. And without him everything is more difficult.

Here's a video.
