How to unlock the Flyboy achievement in Call of Duty: WWII - Definitive Guide
During Mission 9 'Battle of the Bulge' you will be thrown into the seat of a pilot. Your job here is to kill 12 of the 20 enemy planes that spawn which can be difficult even on Recruit due to your comrades shooting down the planes if you go to slow. During the first phase you will have 8 planes spawn, your objective should be to kill at least 5 here and if you don't restart checkpoint immediately!
The second phase there will be 12 enemy planes that spawn which you will need to quickly kill. Make sure that you're keeping count as you down them and you should get 12 before the second phase finishes but if not restart checkpoint. The best way to take down enemies is when at a distance make sure that you're constantly firing at the enemy as you may end up killing it before getting close and locking on.
Here is a video guide:
1) If you maintain a straight heading at the start wave and do not get too far in front of your buddy planes you will have a plane spawn and fly in right in front of you that will peel off to the left and is easy to get behind, this will ALWAYS be you start point when you Reload the Checkpiont as well. try and make this a quick kill at the start, it is a big help.
2) As the other guides say you have to get 5 kills the first wave (if you get 6 wow good on you) and 7 kills the next wave. When you get 5 (or 6) kills the first wave wait for the CHECKPOINT to flash in the upper right corner I think and at this pint you want to quit out and save your game while In-Game. This way if you screw up in the second wave you can just restart you mission from that save point making life SO MUCH EASIER, trust me and do this as it sucks to redo the 5 kills over and over again as it can take awhile (took while for me to figure this out, A HUGE HELP). Do not worry if Checkpoint flashes after the second wave it is NOT a game save point and when you quit out and reload you will be at the start of wave 2 again. (You need to do the Dashboard trick/method here and QUIT the game from there, if you try and QUIT while still In-Game then you will save at this new point erasing your old save so be careful)
3) Some guys say do not use LOCK-ON with your left trigger when you get behind a plane, I would actually advise this because if you use your left stick to speed up and get in close when you press left trigger to lock, take your thumb off your left stick as you will match the other planes speed exactly and can follow and lead him so much better for shots. If you leave your thumb ON the left stick you will change your speed and will either pull back from the other plane or overshot him, so get that thumb off that left stick once you lock on and it will make killing him easier.
4) When shooting at planes do this a) LEAD your shots ahead of the plane and aim for the main body no the wings, quicker kills this way. b) shoot in short bursts, if you overheat your gun all the time you will take a lot longer to make kills due to the cool down time, and TIME is important here as your buddies are pretty quick dropping planes. c) once the plane you are shooting is totally engulfed in flames but still flying just peel off and find a new target because in about 5 seconds he will start spinning and explode, again trying to save time here, you do NOT need to finish him off, he is done. (Quick note if one of your buddies is also attacking this plane then of course finish him off, do not need him stealing your kill if you peel off while he is engulfed and buddy puts in a few more rounds before he spins out).
5) I would count out loud as you make kills, do not know how many times I was not sure if I had 4 or 5 kills or 6 or 7 kills and if you are not sure then you MUST restart that checkpoint again.
6) Of COURSE this achievement has a LUCK component as well. The rate at which you kill planes IN NO WAY effects the rate at which your buddies shoot down planes, your buddies effectiveness is completely RANDOM. I have dropped 3 planes pretty quick only to look up and see there are only 1 or 2 planes left, conversely I have spent 20 seconds plus getting the first kill and it is the first kill of the wave, so how fast your buddies drop planes is never the same or constant but for the most part they are rather fast. So yes make your kills FAST but still watch that kill meter to see if you have enough planes left to make the kills you need, that meter can change pretty quick. what you are hoping for is your buddies really suck on a wave you are doing well on, this the luck part of this and why this achievement is not so easy.
7) If you only need one more kill and you are down to the last plane on the kill meter for that wave, get behind a plane pretty quick. It seems if you are LOCKED ON to last plane the game will let you see if you can kill it and will delay your buddies kills unless you lose the lock on or lose the plane then you are toast.
8) I played on recruit as well as normal trying for this and did not see much of a difference so your call what you want to play here. I also set my controls to the lowest sensitivity (1 or 2) as I found the higher ones made it really hard to line up shots properly, just to jumpy and I was always over-correcting and over shooting the target. Slower controls I found worked better.
9) Do not wait for your LOCK ON, start shooting at your target (leading him, look for RED in your Target Recticle) as you get in to line him up, I have dropped quite a few planes at distance while trying to get in close, again going for time saving here.
10) The other bit of luck here is where your next target is once you drop the plane you were firing on, the game will highlight a plane for you with a Nazi Cross which for some reason is ALWAYS behind you it seems, but if you press the little button to the left of the xbox button it will now show all the planes in the fight so you can try for one of those if they are closer but the highlighting of these planes is pretty quick so may take a few button presses till you get in close. The luck part here is if you down a plane and another comes in right in front of you that you can get behind, in a lot of the videos I have watched this happens quite often during their play-through but was a pretty rare event when i was playing, I lost a lot of time trying to get to my next target, so having your targets fall into place really helps, again luck.
Hope this helps you guys having problems, the hardest part is the LUCK part as your buddies on MOST waves are pretty good which sucks, if your buddies are being very effective then just restart checkpoint and do not waste your time. If you need 3 kills and there are only 3 left planes left pack it in also. GOOD LUCK and eventually LUCK and YOUR SKILL will come together in the same waves and you will get this done.
Feel free to post comments on other helpful hints you may have and i will update this solution and also give you FULL CREDIT, pretty sure I missed a few good ideas.
- You need to shoot down 12 out of 20 enemy planes in the flying section of this mission.
- 8 in the first section, and 12 in the second section.
- Use the button to highlight the enemies, target one and hunt them down, then go to the next one and hunt them down etc.
- Your mates can also take down the planes so don't waste to much time when taking them down to ensure you get most of them

There are a total of 20 enemy planes that you can shoot down when you're up in the sky, this would otherwise be a simple task if your allies were not also shooting these enemy planes down. The planes will come in 2 waves, the first requiring 8 to be destroyed and the second wave requiring 12. These numbers will be represented by plane symbols at the top right of the screen, for every plane destroyed one will be marked off with a red cross.
By pressing you are able to locate enemy planes as a marker will appear above them, once one has been spotted fly after them until you're close and hold (default controls) to lock onto their marker to trigger a pursuit. When in a pursuit you need only focus on shooting as you’ll effectively enter an auto-pilot mode. You can also shoot down planes by free-aiming when flying, although you’ll need to shoot ahead of where they are flying (similarly to using the AA guns). If your aim is fairly consistent, it's slightly quicker to shoot down planes this way than to chase after them to start a pursuit.
You’ll need to take down over half of the planes available in this mission; therefore, you'll need to be prompt with each plane you're attacking. If you feel you've taken too long on a single plane, or several have been crossed off the screen which weren't of your doing, then pause the game and restart from your last checkpoint.
Here's some good advice. Do not try to focus on one plane, i.e. when the icon appears that you have it fixed. No matter how many times I try this, you won’t have time to shoot down many planes like that.
When I completed the achievement, there was still a good supply of unshot down planes left - 6 pieces.
I flew mostly without zooming (aim button) and tried to shoot ahead. If you see that the marker turns red, start shooting and watch for hits - red stripes appear on the sight. And don't overheat the gun.

I wanted to add so that everything goes smoothly for you.
Do not increase the speed of the plane, almost as soon as the planes appear, press the touch button on the joystick and highlight all the planes and fly calmly and shoot at them from a distance as soon as you see that the sight has turned red. As a result, you will shoot more than enough aircraft.
