How to unlock the MW2 - Cutting heads off Snakes achievement in Call of Duty - Definitive Guide

One thing to note is that Realism difficulty will only be unlocked after your first campaign playthrough. So unfortunately, if you had plans to jump straight into it you'll have to wait until you beat it. I would recommend playing it on Veteran your first time through if you've had experience with other COD campaigns. In total, I'd say you'll be spending a solid 7+ hours on Veteran if it's your first time playing through.

Cutting Heads off Snakes requires all missions to be completed on Veteran. There are 17 missions total:

1. Strike
2. Kill or Capture
3. Wetwork*
4. Tradecraft
5. Borderline
6. Cartel Protection
7. Close Air
8. Hardpoint
9. Recon by Fire*
10. Violence and Timing*
11. El Sin Nombre*
12. Dark Water*
13. Alone*
14. Prison Break*
15. Hindsight
16. Ghost Team*
17. Countdown*

* = Level has achievement associated

I'll be honest, it seems that this campaign overall was more difficult than most. I think that's also due to the nature of a good handful of enemies having armor this time around, thus becoming bullet sponges. For these enemies you'll primary be focusing on headshots. Luckily, 2-3 shots from just about any weapon will take care of them. Not to mention just enemies overall seem they spent quite a bit of time at the shooting range as they were just a tad more accurate than they have been. Their reaction times were just outstanding, and always having that 6th sense of where you are at all times.

As far tips, always refill on ammo and supplies every moment you get. Utilize your flashbangs/tear gas along with your Molotov and grenades. It really can be a night and day difference instead of always being the hero with your guns. Do not try to run and gun. That simply just did not work for me even when I wanted it to.

Does anyone know if it is alright if I play through part of a mission on a lower difficulty to get the mission specific achievement, then after I pop the achievement, restart that same mission on veteran? Or will.doing that mess with this achievement?

@Chris Hoke, I completely agree. The only mission so far that gave me any issues was Alone and going for the not firing a gun achievement. But I'm glad they did it this way and hope they continue to allow early access to the campaign so that we can enjoy it.

What sucks is that you can run into a rare bug the ruins your run for that level. In Alone, my game crashed and no longer loaded the level. Every load crashed the game. I was 20m away from the target and had to redo the entire level.

Alone was a bit of a headache, but that was mostly due to my luck being so bad that everything that could go wrong, went terribly wrong. I also ran into a glitch at the end of Prison Break that wouldn't let me go down the rope. There are videos (thankfully) with workarounds, but of course, the glitch happens during the Veteran run and not my casual, enjoy the story, run. Overall, this campaign isn't too bad on Veteran, but still has its moments of frustration.

the game lets u change difficulty mid level. You dont have to beat game on realism. Has anyone tried changing difficulty to veteran last second before they finish a level?

As mentioned above, this achievement won't unlock until after the credits. However, you can skip the credits and the achievement will still unlock.

Beat this last night. Hardest parts for me were Alone (especially the last section) and the tank. Overall, not too bad, just take your time and utilize your equipment.

I also did not get this achievement after finishing on Vet. I did not skip the credits. Interestingly, after the credits it put me back to a pause screen with Load Checkpoint etc..which I thought was curious.

All missions on select screen show highest difficulty completed as Vet.

EDIT: I replayed the final mission, watched the credits beyond the plane scene for quite some distance, then skipped and the achievement popped.

I can confirm you need to watch to plane scene then watch 2 minutes of the credits with the song in Spanish then skip. I used a stopwatch and 2 mins worked for me. Only way I could get it to pop. Thanks all

@ir0nici0nic and anyone else, DO NOT start a level on a lower difficulty to get other achievements. My Veteran run is now going to have to be redone to get the Vet achievement. you can apparently run back on a level in lower difficulty and then go back to the new level on veteran and it'll count. I was impatient. It doesn't pop with the campaign completion achievement, it pops at the end of credits.

It's been very easy so far on veteran, compared to older MW games. The only missions I'm worried about are the stealth ones where you have to hide and craft shit. They were annoying on regular so we'll see.

I struggled at "recon by fire" because checkpoints stopped after I reached the lighthouse (I sneaked pass soliders in truck). After clearing the houses multiple heavy armored enemies ran towards house and wiped me out. Finally found fix to get checkpoints back. Before clearing houses kill the soldiers by the truck and go uphill. 4 more soliders will run towards you, snipe at distance. Once all soliders on hill is gone you get checkpoint and checkpoints will work after that. I actually cleared one of the houses by lighthouse first, discovred checkkpoint problem and then killed soliders on the hill, still worked.

So I had a friend help with this on Ghost Team:
For the entrance into the command center going after Graves, this is timed and if you don't get up stairs in short order, Seems like around 1 minute or just past that maybe, Graves will get away and you'll fail the mission and have to re-start the CP. Friend mentioned that before you go in, put on some Armor plates as you have some areas before you reach the command center that has supply for plates, Helps if you get hit as if you don't, one hit and your dead on Veteran. Throw a flash bang and and try to take out one enemy on the left side exiting the door on the upper balcony. Once he's gone, quickly move up the stairs and as you get to the corner piller throw a flash bang or grendade at the right side wall and it will bounce towards enemies coming from the left balcony area and in front of you in the right side door in the office thats to the left of the stair pillar. Start shooting quicky to take out enemies in front of you and in the office. Try to keep behind the pillar for some cover. If you can get thru thus, then run up and throw another grenade or flash bang into the office in front of you. There will be one or two in here. Get to the very right side of the door way to help with some cover. Take out last enemies here. This area is a hassel and is frustrating. Once your near the right side door area, seems to stop the timer. And friendlies move in and then you be moving to the back of the office and down the back stiars. This section of the mission completes here.

I wish some of the YT video guides would have mentioned or showed this. I feel that most of the common YT video guides were not actually dont on Veteran though the title of the videos are marked at Veteran. Too many inconsistancies seem to prove some of these videos are not on Veteran. warning

The tank area, my friend said that you need four C4s to finally blow up the tank in Veteran. They were able to place C4 from ground level first, Detonate, then after getting two more, they went to the root top where enemies won't follow and was able to plant the last two from the root tops. Seems like if you don't know what process to follow you can get into a bad situation with ground enemies swarming and leaving you with a bad CP which at one point my friend has to restart the entire mission over from the beginning. Something some YT video guides don't mention as well or was not actually done on Veteran. There is a possibility that you could plant two C4s, not dentonate, then go collect to more then plant then detonnate but that would need to have all C4s at one location. Might be too risky for this. Friend said he planted each one and then detonated each one, one at a time. I guess if you can get them planted ON the tank itself helps as well.

There could be better detailed information on how to get this mission completed on Veteran.

Overall, This mission is horrendous and frustrating to say the least. angry

I also agree that it was "easy" compared to earlier games, I basically played the last couple of mission with the shield which gave me god mode. And besides that the game has way to many stealth missions...

The hardest part for me was clearing the last building on "Recon by fire" Even "Alone" was less frustrating than that stupid house! Overall this one was relatively easy to do other than a few BS enemies who one shot you with perfect wall hacks.

Can anyone give some guideance on how to get thru Ghost Team?
Having problems with going into the Command building and up the stairs after Graves.
All the guides I see on YT seems like there not done on Veteran though they are titled as such. I dying quickly trying to get up the stairs or if I use the left or right side lower sections to hid some, that takes time away and if I don't get up the stairs soon enough, I fail the mission as it reports Graves got away.

Also whats best method to take out the tank at the end? Is two C4s needed or more than two are needed? Placement. How are ground enemies handled? Seems like we got on top of one roof after using two C4s on the tank but didn't blow up and enemies are swarming the buldiing. Seems like almost impossible to get the tank here.

Any known good video guides that you can point to that are shown on veteranl difficulty would be great. Suggestions and details please.

Seems like MW2 as spawned some videos that content creators mark as Veteran but when i watch them and follow on my game on verteran, I see many inconsistancies like different guns being used and being hit by gun fire and still going while I get shot and die immediately. Just seems like some of these video guides are not really done on Veteran.

@Furr E Nuts
Also whats best method to take out the tank at the end?
My strategy was charge forward to the first building and grab the C4. Deal with the enemies that run in if you have to. Go upstairs and try to kill any guys left downstairs, while avoiding Graves.

Identify where your next C4 location is, and wait for Graves to not be in your path. Drop down, double-tap sprint to get there and get the C4. Try to rush to the nearest building and get back upstairs. Knowing where Graves travels, toss both C4 charges in his projected path. Wait for him to drive over and double-tap to set them off.

Now is when more enemies spawn, most-likely armored. Probably going to take multiple times, but wait for your chance to either pick the guys off, or take your chances to sprint to your next C4 case (find one or two nearby). Do your best to try to get back to a roof. Again, toss them into the projected path of Graves.

I honestly was not looking forward to this mission, but it was the least of my worries overall.

This coming from someone who Veteran'd CoD 3 (and most other CoD games). I think the key with the recent games is once you eliminate the predetermined enemies, you're good. I don't think there is infinite-spawn like there used to be.

Anyway, good luck. If you're looking for help on Youtube, I know "GLID Gaming" (real Royal Marine Commando) is playing through the game on Realism (pretty entertaining as well). He's not quite to this mission, but his playthrough so far might help with previous missions. "OriginalHuman" has finished the campaign on Veteran (or Realism, can't remember).

Overall not really as tough a campaign as made to believe. A few spots were "tougher" like scaling down the tower to take out hostage takers without them killing a hostage (good positioning/decision on who to shoot first really helps) and the 2 armored badies in the final mission with no weapons at first (which can be easier if you watch a video to find a glass shard easily to take one of them out).

For the clearing warehouse/house type area (looking for missles) just stay hidden on rooftop and let your npc ally do the work after gassing thr enemies out.

The main thing I want to mention is on a few levels (prison and restaurant) riot shields are available and never seem to break even after tons of rounds fired at them on veteran. Use them to your advantage by always keeping enemies in front of you. To easily kill shielded enemies just use molotov etc... easy as pie.

You can usually find a way to cheese out a difficulty achievement and this game is no exception.

The tank part was an absolute nightmare and a lot of chance positioning on getting more c4 and back to a slightly safer area. I can also confirm that at least 1 enemy came up the stairs on a rooftop on the far side and was armored.

As for the stairs of the command building flashbangs and quick firing after is your friend. I threw one up the left door area as I quickly went to column at top of stairs then threw another against the right wall to wall hit back to the right doorway then quick fired as I pushed up killing the first guy in front of the door, killing the one that moved right side of doorway and then left side of doorway as he approached it. Flashband the room from the wall corner by the right doorway and kill the last 1 or 2 as your allies move up and take care of the leftside baddies. Then move to the back of the room towards the exiting area. Probably would have been easier with armored plates but I mostly skipped the barracks opting to go thru between the buildings using the chopper to do the heavy work and don't think I had the plates or at least didn't use. In fact, I don't think I ever used plates in this game unless they were auto engaged.

I've gotten this achievement on every COD and these are rules to live by.
-Move slow and use cover. If you run out in the open you'll get cut down instantly.
-Use your squad. You can run past invisible walls to trigger your squad to move up, and then retreat back behind cover and wait for them to wipe the enemies.
-Throw grenades early and often. Don't be shy with the flashes or nades. These give you a massive upper hand when used correctly so fire away. You don't get bonus points for finishing the mission with nades in your pocket.

Tips for this game specifically:
-Grab a shotgun. There are a ton of armored enemies, and the shotgun can one shot them(head) if you get close. Use the flash nades.
-Grab a riot shield. Some of the toughest sequences in this game can be done quite easily if you grab a riot shield before hand. It basically makes you invincible, and you can melee enemies easily.
-Grab a noob tube. A lot of enemies drop rifles with grenade launchers attached. It is super easy to clear rooms or disorient armored enemies when you can launch a nade every three seconds.

I actually think this game is easier than earlier installments to complete on Veteran. Stick with it, aim for the head, and take a walk if you get too frustrated...good luck!
