Picture guides are a menace to follow as you can never determine where the collectable is going to be, I have found a video walk through for the users of this site. Enjoy!

The video guide works perfectly and it took me just over 2 days *on and off* of going through the game collecting all the collectibles.

Just so everyone knows:
At the end of each chapter there's gonna be a little stats card showing you things like accuracy and headshots. It will also state how many secrets you found, this isn't accurate to how many you've found total in the level. So if you found some before, and then you found some now, it won't show you the correct number. If you pick up every secret shown in the videos, then you're good.

The counter in this game is incredibly stupid. If Thomas picks up 2 collectables it'll show 2/5 for him and if Ray picks up the other 3 it'll show 3/5 for him (i.e. if both brothers pick up 1 of the 5 collectables it'll never show as 5/5). Makes it very hard to track down any missing secrets.

Do they carry over between difficulties? I'm at 88/89 after the easy playthrough and would like to play on very hard know to find the last one. Otherwise I would replay levels on my current save beforehand.

Yes, this is also a terrible achievement. As sm182 said, you do you not see how many you have in total, only how many that particular character has. But even crazier is you only see this counter at the end of a level. That means when mopping up, you many have to play each level twice in order to get to the counter and see how many each player has, to find out which level has your missing collectables. I just ended up replaying the entire game using the video and checking for every collectable again. Bad design.

I'd go a step further and say the collectible counter is bugged. I'm unsure how many collectibles I got on level 6 the first time. But the second time it was 7 as I was attempting to double up on very hard and collectibles but I realized that was stupid because I didn't need to waste time on this level in very hard when I could skip it.

The third time around I got them all. And it said 11/12.

Went back and double checked them all 11/12.

If I started up the level and immediately ended by talking to Thomas... 11/12....

I got every other collectible and this popped.

Have no idea what the F is going on with those end level counters...

These are scattered around all over the place, you will find them in trunks, boxes, coffins, bookcases etc, follow the following guide and you shouldn't have any problem. Just make sure you have them all before progressing to the next level. The collectables counter at the end of the level will not give you the correct amount so check it from the achievements status menu rather than the end of level stats.
