You should unlock this during the first race.

Little pop-ups will appear on the screen.

Press cn_Y to repair
Press cn_back to view replay
Press cn_X to repair

And like 1 or 2 more. Do those and the achievement will unlock.

If you miss it during the first race, from the main menu select 'Stuff' and go to 'Tutorials'.

Any tips for those of us who didn't get it in the first race? delete save and try again?

If you didn't get this when starting the game, then manually at the main menu click "stuff" and go to Tutorials. Now interactive tutorial, then go to the last interactive tutorial.
