How to unlock the Chancellor of Catan achievement in Catan - Definitive Guide

The developer expects you to play ranked matches a lot. Win or lose, all points are supposed to count. However this game has some problems... anytime you go to unlock two achievements at the exact same time, it will unlock one, and prevent the other from ever unlocking (unless you recover your gamertag on a console where you haven't played Catan, and re-achieve the requirement). Also the game has been known to lose your ranked Victory Points.

Because of this, if you want to make sure you unlock without worrying about the points counting or not counting, and if another achievement will unlock at the same time :

Build, Unbuild, Rinse, Repeat. If you build a settlement or city during a ranked match. It counts as 1 point toward this... even if you UNBUILD it. During a turn, you can generally build/undo anywhere from 20 to 25 times You might start slower, but you'll eventually get the speed up. Cities are easier, since a settlement has the same requirement as a road, thus you have to navigate past road to build the settlement.

You must START a ranked match with 4 players, however if a player drops, it will replace it with a computer AI player. Points you get STILL count if a human player drops. This works as of the date of posting (Oct 10, 2009). We had people get the achievements both after 1 person dropped, and after 2 people had dropped. I would assume that they will work even if 3 people drop and you are left alone, however I cannot confirm this. See notes for confirmation that this does work.

It's better if you do this when other players are knowingly doing it as well, otherwise you are likely to get a lot of bad feedback. If all 4 players are doing it, you can pretty much keep the game going "forever" since no one will get enough points to win. Achievement is awarded IN GAME, not at the end, so you can get multiple VP achievements during one game. Note that if you use this method you will likely have to do all 1000 points in 1 sitting (can be multiple games - just don't exit to the dashboard). If you exit the game your point total will likely reset to 0. It doesn't always do this though, so feel free to try at your own risk.

Well, I just got this achievement, and I would like to add something important:

DONT SPLIT SESSIONS! Me and some mates lost hundreds of points just by finishing the game. For some of us, a network error would pop up after somebody would get the 10th VP, causing him to lose all stats INCLUDING those before the match. It happened to me too.

I discovered this when I got my 500VP cheevo. I got it when i reached 485. I had 3 matches before this, of which ONLY the last one (the third one) got an error.

In other words, DON'T RISK SPLITTING SESSIONS!. Make sure you have 4 hours for 1 session. If you have to leave, leave your 360 on so the others don't have to struggle with the AI.

Second:
Whoever is the host, can build/unbuild faster. The trick is that the player should press UNDO as soon as his city is build and blinking. Go IMMEDIATELY back to build, and mash the A button 3 times to instantly build the city again. If done right, the cards will flow into the hands of the player, and immediately flow back to the board (thus building the city).

Doing so, the host can build almost 40 cities per round. All other players are around 25 depending on their network connnection.

OK, just popped this 3 nights after getting the 500VP one. Pulled the wireless adapter cable shortly after everyone placed their settlements, then putting it back in. 1/3 of the time, it didn't drop anyone, 1/3 it booted me from the game and XBL, and 1/3 it'd make the other 3 icons show the loading icon, then swap them to AI.

I figured in my last comment that it was giving me 9VP on the score screen every time I built/undid a city, so I'd need ~9000 to get this. Had just over 4500 for the 500VP achievement, then quit for the night. Got 1900 the next night, 1200 this morning, and just over 1400 tonight when it popped.

I think the most important part, if you're going to play against AI and can't get it all done in one session, is to make sure you finish any game you start. It appears the points are added to your profile when you build the city, but not removed from there with Undo. They're added to your online ranked standings with the official end-of-game wrap-up, so if you're getting reset, make sure you finished the full game.

@CrazyJGerman : Depends on which of the glitches is causing you a problem. If you say got biggest army and longest road at the same time (and only one of them unlocked) then follow this :

Let me try to clear this up for the people who haven't gotten it yet...

Your Catan counters are in your profile/GamerTag. Once you have hit the problem of an achievement unlocking, the counter is past the "trip" point, and it will never check it again.

In order to FIX the problem you need to RECOVER your gamertag (but not over itself).

If you have one xbox, and one memory card :

* Move your profile to the memory card.
* Remove the memory card.
* Tell the xbox to recover your account (could take awhile)
* Play Catan (connected to live) unlock whatever you were cheated out of.

Once you are done, you can disconnect from live, delete your gamertag from the hard drive, put back the one from the memory card. When you boot and login, it will say it needs to download your tag. You can skip this process, but if any other games keep data in your profile, you'll be missing that data.

If you have two xboxes, just recover on the other xbox (do not transfer via memory card) play until you unlock said achievement (again, while connected to live), go back to the original xbox and re-recover (it will force you to).

I was able to do this to finally fix my problems with Catan, and people don't seem to understand. Since they are always saying things like, I moved my tag to a memory card and played on another console. THAT WILL NOT WORK... you must RECOVER your tag to make it work, and you MUST NOT do it over an existing tag that has played Catan (because it'll still be glitched)
I posted this at http://forums.xbox.com/25443734/ShowPost.aspx so you may find additional information in that thread.

I tried setting up a few sessions for this achievement and none of them worked out. I ended up joining random sessions, profusely apologising, and going at it. Everyone quit within about 5 minutes. I can confirm that with 3 computers progression will still count. Doing this twice was sufficient for the achievement to pop.

Not sure why this happened, but while going for this tonight (only popped 250 and 500 so far), I noticed that building/removing a city gave me 9 points on the LB score screen, rather than the 2 it's supposed to. Could just be me misunderstanding the scoring system, but 500 popped for me after I had 4500 points over a few games in multiple sessions. I'm assuming I have to hit 9000 using this method to pop the 1000 achievement.

If that's the score you're looking at, and it hasn't popped, check your score, place a city, then check it again to see how much the score has increased by. Multiply that by 1000, and that's how many you have to do, so you may still be able to get it.

Awesome tip!
Here's a more efficient way of doing it...
Place your two settlements over wheat and ore fields only (if possible, of course). Then as you progress, all you'll get are those two, so when you build, that's the default option that you get.
Once you get the rhythm going... it should be like this.
- Press B to build
- Press A to accept (city by default since you have no other resources)
- Press A to plant city
- Tap right on the D-pad twice and Press A to undo
Repeat.

On average during the one minute, I can get about 30-40 victory points each time... so it should take 25 rounds to get all 1000 points.

Hope this helps with boosting this achievement faster :)

Oh yeah, under Help and Options, set your dealing speed to high. It makes the movement of cards and buildings on and off the board a lot faster :)

Copy-pasting the post I made last night on xbox.com:

Tonight I had the opportunity to try the trick that everyone says to use to get the VP achievements. I started a ranked game, and (probably due to my crappy connection) everyone else was knocked out of the game at once. I started doing the lay-a-city-delete-repeat trick. By the end of the game, the score card said I had 646 VP. The game ended, and I still don't have the 500/100 VP achievements.

(Before the game started, I had 85 wins and 180 losses. So at the very least I already had 850 VP, and probably closer to 1750. That's assuming an average of 5 VP/loss.)

I guess I will never get those points.

Sounds good. Does it have to be in one session? Any VP obtained from victories or losses don't matter unless I do not turn off my xbox and try to get the 1000 points in one session?

This game is VERY buggy. It would be best to do without closing the game. Multiple online games can be played, as long as you never go back to the dashboard. Some people luck out, and can close the game and come back to it. I however had to do all 1,000 in one sitting after I had already done around 750 before.

"I would assume that they will work even if 3 people drop and you are left alone, however I cannot confirm this."

CONFIRMED

I did it after everyone left and was only Computers playing.

But I did it in one sitting like everyone has been saying. It took me 5 games 3 1/2 hours and bam both Achievements!

This worked like a charm. I can confirm that you have to stay in the game (no quitting to dashboard) in order to get the achievement. This means doing the achievement in one sitting. Took about 3 1/2 hours with other boosters.

So if the achievements is glitched for me, what is the best approach? If I was to got to my friends house and recover my tag, would I then have to re-purchase the game on his xBox in order to get the achievement, or would I be able to redownload and just play it on his xBox? All I know is that this is definitly glitched for me... Thank you for your help...

Just in case anyone was wondering, building & unbuilding a road for "The Longest Road" does NOT count towards this achievement in this way.

Also, make sure you're NOT building on the edge of the map on the desert tile. In order for you to gain points towards this achievement, you must be increasing your score (the second number in the list you look at with the victory points etc.)

You can check how much your score increases each time by holding down LT & RT at the same time. This will show you points on the board, and where you are building is how many points you get each time. By doing this, you will know exactly when your achievement will unlock.

I got it legit, but I think it´s down to pure luck. I think the game has the same glitch Small Arms had back in the day: when the game is going to check if you should unlock the achievement, it just looks if points = 1000, not if points >=1000. That means if you had 999 points and you get 2 by the longest road, for example, you get from 999 to 1001 and the achievement gets glitched.

That´s why some people get 25 points glitched, others get 500 glitched, and the worst lucky people get 1000 glitched. I personally didn´t have a problem with any of the achievements, but it´s pure luck. Boosting is the only safe way of getting this, sadly (I personally enjoyed doing it legit).

Awesome guide. Once I got the rhythm I was getting 45 points / round. B-A-A-Right-Right-A, B-A-A-Right-Right-A, B-A-A-Right-Right-A. Just get that rhythm in your head like the beat of a drum and you will get this fast.

Glad to see this is still being used by people. I did update the text to "If you exit the game your point total will likely reset to 0. It doesn't always do this though, so feel free to try at your own risk." I hate to make people play all 1000 in one sitting if they don't need to.

If you are like me and wanted to employ this method without fear of being labelled a cheater, I checked TrueAchievement's definition of cheating. I believe this method is fine as it sounds like "Taking advantage of bad stats coding" or "Taking advantage of bad coding in general".

However, does anyone know if this violates the Xbox Live Code of Conduct? There's a line there about "unauthorized methods" in "Don't intentionally play with someone who is using unauthorized software or methods to help inflate your game rank or gamerscore." Of course, there isn't any description of what counts as an unauthorized method.

I have the 25 VP achievement. In my session tonight, we're trying for 1000. Can I play through through 100, 500, 1000 achieves in one session, or does that count as "doing them at the same time?"

The 500 and 1000 ranked points both pop mid-match. So they won't cause any problems. I'm not sure if the others pop mid-match, but would expect them to. So I would think you could do them all in one go.

Thanks. Got up to 500 the other night.

FYI to all, if you end the game with a win or loss normally, you keep your VP's. If you quit out, I think you lose them. also remember you can hold LB to check your VP's - it's the number that keeps going up.

also make sure to set your deal speed to fast - that upped my 15 VP's a round to about 25, off-host.

Tried to do this in a session, but one person didn't show so we had 3. It took like two hours to get 250VP. The party broke up, but I persisted after that alone and it took me two games to finish. The first game 1 person quit and the others didn't mind me boosting. The 2nd game 2 people quit and the lone person didn't like it, but accepted it. I left during the second match after the cheevo popped so as to minimize being an ass, but it worked! Just join a game a good till you get it!

FYI I thought this game was dead since it was so old, but nope. There are people to find a game with. There are not tons mind you but enough to get in a game (you need 4 to start) and then they can quit if they want.

Popped it today using this method, I'm sure annoying several gamers. I apologized before matches started, and as the game went on. I started around midnight, and finally popped this around 2 in the afternoon. 14 hours. This was without anybody to help me boost. I'm sure it can be done much quicker if 4 players got together.

So this method still works as of May 21, 2015

Just use this strategy on Sept 7th 2011. I can confirm it works and can also confirm that points carry over from each game as long as you don't exit to the dashboard (my first game I got close to 800 VPs, then in my second game the achievement popped after around 200 VPs)

By ArnVikings on 08 Sep 2011 15:23
Ya, I don't buy that the game keeps accurate numbers on your VPs. I have 31 wins and 52 losses in ranked, which means all I would have to get is 3.7 VPs per lost game. Seeing as my TRUESKILL rank is 9, and I EASILY get more than 4 points a game [usually at least 7], there is no way the game keeps proper track of the total VP. So forget trying to get this cheevo legit.

I also tried two games with this strategy, just in case I was somehow "barely" away from 500, but nope, no cheevo.

I will try and get a boosting session together to try and do this is one go, and will post back my progress.

Great news everyone!! It took me two games to get this. Some tips!

Points do carry over (they did for me at least). I got the 500 point achievement and played some time after that in my first game. (Getting approximately 700 VPs in that game apparently.) In the second game, I got about 300 VPs when Chancellor popped. (How do I count? Keep reading.) I think the key is to remain in the game until it finishes to have your stats save and carry over. I also did this on one Xbox, although I have 3.

If you press LB at the game screen, the screen that pops up has a "pieces remaining" section, the number of Settlements remaining will GO UP each time you undo a built City. This means you can keep track of the victory points you've scored in that game (if you're using Cities and not Settlements to boost).

The HOST has the ability to build MUCH faster than the others, the better your connection, the faster you can Build-Undo-Repeat. I know this because someone who we assumed was the host was getting almost twice what everyone else got in a round. I ended up dropping from the party and got placed in a game with 3 bots. I was able to build twice as fast as I was able to with my poor connection with the three other people in it.

"Chancellor of Catan" is easily obtainable through boosting. In fact, while I'm on the topic, the only way you'll probably get this achievement is through boosting. I say that only because the online community is as dead as a doorknob.

The achievement says to get 1000 Victory Points in Ranked Game Sessions. This tracks all Victory Points, or VP as you might read somewhere else, not just the 10 Victory Points required to win the session. Ergo, you can undo and redo any action that scores Victory Points while having it count for "Chancellor of Catan".

Quick Notes for boosting "Chancellor of Catan".
- There is a one minute turn timer that cannot be removed from the ranked session of Catan. By turn timer, I mean you have one minute to complete your turn.

- If all human players have dropped out of the session, you can continue the boosting method as if they were all human players.

- The Achievement will unlock the moment you have reached 1000 Victory Points, and will not wait until after the game to unlock itself.

- You will lose track of all points you lost that session if you exit that session. In other words, you must complete the session to keep the points.

- You don't have to coordinate boosting with other people, however it is heavily frowned upon to do this in a game where boosting has not been coordinated.

Lets say the estimated time for unlocking this achievement is 4 Hours. I started from 0 (Down to Zero they were, leaving, for another one) and this took me approximately Four hours of dedicated boosting.

How do I set up a boosting session and boost?
1) Get into a Ranked Lobby.

2) Go through Initial Game Setup.

3) Gather enough resources so that you may place a settlement. Also gather enough resources to place two, maybe even one, roads. After this, proceed to place your settlement.

4) After the settlement has been placed, scroll through the mini menu in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, this is your actions list (Trade, Build, End Turn, etc.) and select undo. (above end turn action)

5) Continue to do this (Be sure to keep an eye on the timer) until "Chancellor of Catan" unlocks

Remember, Patience is a virtue.

Need Motivation? Running out of patience? Play music, and if you don't know what songs to play, I find R&B Passes time great!

ALERT!! : A friend of mine got banned for a week from xbox live.. laughlaugh for taking me too literally about getting the other person to quit. After absolutely spamming their inbox... they didn't leave... he eventually completed the game.. and got banned for a week. Be POLITE like I said. LOL

Okay! Got this achievement a few days ago, and think I've got a few time saving tweaks. Many thanks to other solutions and comments!
IMPORTANT--once you start boosting this using the build/unbuild method, do NOT exit the game to the dashboard! Some people report that works, but most people say it won't count your points if you do.

My biggest time saving tip is to try to get in a match by yourself! If you do, it should take less than 30 minutes to get this achievement.

If you set up a session, start with 4 players, then as soon as it starts, have the other 4 place their settlements on awful spots around the edge of the map or all right next to each other, then have them quit. You stay in the game.
Reason for this! You won't have to wait for the other boosters or humans in your party, and the computers ALWAYS play fast! You'll be around to your next rebuilding turn in about 20 seconds sometimes, whereas a boosting session full 4 player game will take you a minimum of 3 1/4 minutes to get back to your turn. You should be able to get your 40-50 builds per turn since you are now the host, and at this rate it shouldn't take you more than 30 minutes!!
Now for some other tips with credit to the authors:
Credit to Sketchy McSktch; Start the game and hog all the wheat and ore(I actually won a game doing this LOL!!), so when it comes time to build, you'll have city as the only default build option, and roads won't get in the way of your fast settlement building by default. Once you have enough wheat and ore, sell/trade/buy stuff so you won't lose your stuff on a 7 unless you have ten cards or more, because then you will always keep a city's worth of cards. Now, as soon as your turn starts after your roll, hit "cn_B, cn_A, cn_A, cn_right cn_right, cn_A" and repeat. What this does is: "Build, Select City, Build City, D-pad to Undo, and Undo". Repeat this, get the rhythm going(credit to PrimeBigTime), and you'll easily get over 40 a go! Be careful to watch for the 3-second timer and make sure to undo in time so it doesn't actually build.

Credit also to Sketchy McSktch: under options, set your deal card speed to the fastest possible, this will save so much time!!

Now, for the other 3 people if you're in a session, or if you're boosting this on your own, you can search for a ranked match, tell the other people in the game what you're doing, and start doing it. Have the 3 people or however many you have do this, once the game starts, the extras quit, and leave the booster in their own lobby. If human non-boosting opponents don't want to leave to, make the game miserable for them--after all, you told them what you're doing, they didn't want to leave. :-) I got mine to quit with judicial placement of the robber, terrific trades with the computer opponents, great placement of roads, etc. Once they leave, it's off to the races! :-) Definitely tell them what's going on though as they might leave right away if you ask politely. Maybe offer them a polite good match when you're done. :-) Besides, they usually like to leave after your first build/unbuild minute of constant annoying sounds. lol!

Final tip--if you ever get enough resources for two cities, build two in a row, then unbuild both in a row! Much faster than a single city!laugh

Nice tips. I'll have to try that. I freakin' hate this achievement. It's been a problem for me almost 6 years now.

I accidentally found a trick to get into the match by yourself. My Internet connection dropped for about 30 seconds in a match and the game replaced all the other players with computer players. I was able to repeat this by resetting my router when I got in a match. It made getting the achievement quick. So for a boosting team, all 4 players could use this technique without anyone having to quit out.

Okay. I finally got the achievement. The solution works great! I found that the opening placements for the AI are very important. For example, if you have an AI placed on a sheep port, it is probably best not to have their other settlement placed on a sheep tile.

During the game, I don't think you should be afraid to build a settlement or two, get the longest road, or even buy some development cards, but just make sure you end each turn with 8 or fewer victory points. Cities are definitely the way to go for the achievement. I branched out and built some roads and settlements to block the AI, but for the most part they were incapacitated. If I ended up with both wood and brick in my hand, I just port traded until one of them was gone so I didn't have to page down through the build list each time.

I placed my first settlements on ore and wheat, and was able to get about 20-30 VPs every turn. I had some games played previously, so I estimate I needed about 685 VPs for the 1000 achievement. I got the 1000 in about 1.25 hours.

Good luck to everyone else!

The above solutions are all correct, but I wanted to draw attention to something important in case anyone still needs to boost this:

****LONGEST ROAD DOES NOT COUNT!****

At least not if you are using the build/undo method detailed in the other solutions. You MUST build either a settlement or a city. 4 of us wasted about 2 hours building and unbuilding roads (and gaining, then losing, longest road 2 point bonus) before we figured this out. Don't be like us! Start with settlements or cities. The only place this is mentioned so far is a single comment buried somewhere under one of the above solutions that one of the other people boosting with me noticed.

Credit to Worhammer (Worhammer) for this comment, it is 100% correct, and the entire point of my posting this guide is that anyone looking to boost it *needs* to know this. It should be more noticeable than in the middle of 37 other comments:

"Just in case anyone was wondering, building & unbuilding a road for "The Longest Road" does NOT count towards this achievement in this way."

Indeed it does not. Thanks again to Worhammer, I might have given up on this one without that comment.

Furthermore, as a few people point out, if you hold LB you can see various stats for the current game. In the middle pane there is a column for current VPs for all players, and then the next column over shows a number. That number is the key to this boosting method. Getting something like longest road does not affect that number. Building a settlement or a city makes it go up, but undoing the build does not make it go down. That number seems to go up different amounts based on what you are building, and possibly other factors (it seemed a bit random when we tested it). It is not a 1:1 with VPs though. Cities made it go up about 9, settlements about 4 (usually). My score in this column was around 6,000 when I popped Chancellor, but I had completed roughly 250 legit VPs in real games previously, so your milage may vary. The important thing is to check to make sure this number is going up.

As DragonYen and Shadow 00 Fox point out, cities are better because then you don't have to do anything to select what you are building. (I personally built roads when I could just so that I didn't have too many resources in hand, and so road wouldn't stay on the list of things to build).

You will need to collect 1000 VP for this achievement, but they must be obtained in online RANKED matches. Follow the basic game hints as stated for the other achievements and you will be able to get this fairly easily, although it will take time. Human players are craftier than computer AI, so you will be playing an entirely different game altogether. Win 100 ranked matches and you will unlock both achievements.
