How to unlock the Obelisk Conquered! achievement in Catherine - Definitive Guide

First you must unlock Obelisk by getting 5 gold awards in the story mode on either Normal or Hard. If you have not done so already, then I suggest you check out the following achievement for more info.

Catherine5-Star ManThe 5-Star Man achievement in Catherine worth 78 pointsUnlock the Obelisk by earning 5 Gold Prizes on Normal or Hard.

---------------
Obelisk is approximately 220 steps and consists of every type of block expect for the black hole. As with the other Babel stages there is no set solution as most of the puzzle is randomized. Practice is key however, as a lot of the segments are repeated and it helps to know how to quickly solve certain patterns. Here are some general strategies that can help you conquer this level.

- A strong foundation is a must with this stage. To further clarify, you are going to want to try to keep your steps as wide and level as possible. If you see that your tower is becoming unbalanced, attempt to fix it as soon as possible, otherwise it will quickly spiral out of control.

- Don't be afraid to collapse entire layers. If there are only one or two blocks supporting the tower and your having trouble seeing your next move, feel free to get rid of them. Just make sure that if you have to push multiple blocks to collapse, then do so as fast as possible, otherwise you risk throwing off your foundation. Also note that removing layers will deduct from your overall step count, if you care about that sort of thing.

- Avoid bomb blocks if possible. They are probably the most annoying obstacle in this level as they normally come in pairs and triggering one will throw your tower completely off sync. There are some you can get away with stepping on, but just make sure you foresee the consequences before taking that risk.

- Same goes for the mystery blocks. These will become more and more common as you progress through the level and unfortunately they cannot be avoided. This means luck will be a huge factor with this level as there is no telling when a mystery block will decide to turn into a bomb. As always with mystery blocks, make sure to get off them as quickly as possible, in case they turn into a trap.

- Keep an eye on how far the tower extends below you. I found that this level tends to keep up with you more than the previous two stages and found myself running out of time on numerous occasions. Don't panic if it catches up with you, as once you pick your pace back up, you'll easily be able to put some distance on it. Just keep the time limit in mind when you have to pause to think about your next step or fix your foundation as it is a more prominent obstacle than in the previous levels.

- At about step 120 the path will split into two, this is where things can get particularly tricky. Start scaling whichever side you prefer, but keep in mind that you'll have to switch every so often. If you stay on one side the whole time, it will throw the tower off balance when the two paths eventually merge at about step 170. Just make sure to bridge across every so often and feel free to jump over if one side is becoming too complicated.

- If the level is proving too difficult for you on solo and you don't mind taking the easy way out, you can try beating the stage in Pairs mode. The game is local co-op only, so you'll need two controllers and also keep in mind that if one character dies it is game over. However, even if you are playing by yourself, this will make Babel significantly easier as each level is shorter (Obelisk is ~160 steps) and the puzzles are much simpler than in solo.

---------------
That about covers everything there is to this stage. Personally I found Obelisk to be much easier than Menhir, but that probably has to do with my preference with certain techniques and a great deal of luck. If I can think of anything else or if you have a suggestion, I'll make sure to add it. Also, if you are going to give the solution a negative vote, please leave a comment as to why.

At about 80-85 steps, Obelisk messes me up something fierce. Doesn't matter if it's solo or pairs. Haven't gotten beyond that point yet.

Thanks Rasuhiro. Just finished the game completely tonight. It's a relief. :) If you can finish Obelisk in Pairs, then you can definitely finish Axis Mundi. AM is much, much easier than either Obelisk or Menhir, IMO.

got rank 63

it was easier than menhir due to its wide amount of space for me to work on similar to altars despite the random mystery boxes. at the very end where there was a 6 block tower with a couple mystery boxes attached leading to the goal, i nearly messed up as i pulled out one mystery box and stepped on it turning into a bomb and blowing up most of the blocks on the far left. lucky the far right led to me to success as i made 5 blocks of stairs

You beat me by 2 seconds! *shakes fist* Ya, I hit that one point at the end and almost lost it as well. I have no idea how I managed to pull off the win. Must've been in the zone or something as I was pulling blocks out and doing all kinds of crazy shit.

I sure did sorry to hear about ur similar situation towards the end. If either of my characters died at that part I would rip my shirt and go hulk hogan. But above all we did it and that's what counts :)

Would anyone be kind enough to offer a solution to the final part of Obelisk in pairs mode? Its the V-shaped structure with a column of immobile blocks that holds the goal podiums. I got there with plenty of time but was absolutely stumpred on how to reach the top (I honestly suck at puzzles). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can't say I remember that part, but if you were to describe it in more detail (how high, wide, arrangement, etc.) or better yet, post a picture, I'll gladly help you out.

Think that is the part where you have to pull one out, slide it over, pull the one on top out, jump back down, pull the original block back to make a stair, then push the second one over one spot, push the original block over to keep the stair, rinse and repeat. I can't remember what that move is called though. I would put a diagram up, but apparently, the commenting system doesn't see the spaces correctly when trying to lay it out.

He's already beaten it. I tried helping him through PMs and came up with the same solution you did. Although apparently he did something at some point during the stage and made the last part slightly different and he was able to complete it.

All great advice.

I spent weeks working on this one in solo mode. I managed to get as far as 202 on occasion but the collapsing blocks always caught up to me. Tried it in pair mode, and got it on my third attempt. Pair mode is definitely the way to go.

Hahaha! Fuck you Obelisk! I beat your ass! After about 12 hours of attempting it, finally finished that pig of a challenge.

At about 80-90 steps for Pairs, the tower splits into two sections, you definitely need to bridge every 4-5 steps. You don't need a lot of fancy maneuvers for Pairs. Standard laddering and bridging is about it. Watch out for the monster blocks, but you can shut them off by standing on them. I got real lucky with the mystery blocks this time, think I only had 1 bomb in them.

I agree with the solution, and simply wish to reinforce or restate a few points from my own perspective.
1) of course, avoid bomb blocks where possible. If you trip a mystery block that turns into a bomb (which seems like about about 3/4 of them, amiright?), try pushing it off the tower, or at least out of the way.
2) avoid mystery blocks for the same reason. If you have to step on one, assume that it will be either ice or a trap. That is, don't run straight onto one at an edge, because it could turn into ice, and always hop off, because it could be a trap. Never run over two consecutive mystery blocks, because it's liable to be a deadly ice-trap combo, which is instant death.
3) as bad as mystery blocks are, monster blocks ARE WORSE. I don't know how many times I died because the monster block I planned to step on moved away. I know, it's tempting when you see a monster block to step on it and kill it, but if you don't need it to climb on, stay off of it. Another trick those monster blocks play is to move into the spot you need to escape a spike trap. If I have a choice between two paths, one containing mystery blocks and the other containing monsters, I'm going to take my chances with the mystery blocks.

Keeo on trying, and don't get discouraged. For my first few dozen tries, I was lucky to get to level 80. A few more dozen, and I'd feel good if I broke 100. Many tries later, I was sometimes making it to 150. Yet again many more tries, and I could get to 150 regularly, but usually died around 160-170. Eventually, I did beat it. So can you.

I've read a lot of comments on other forums where people say Obelisk is easier on pairs. I did not find that to be the case.

Hope this helps.

The other solution is good, however I wanted to add a few things and post a video I made to help out a little more.
I think the easiest and best way to do this is with 2 controllers.
I put a pillow on my lap so the controllers didn't slide around and kept at it til I got it.
As you can see in the video, I barely made it.
Sometimes I would switch from this to Axis Mundi in case I was getting too frustrated, but patience and persistence are the keys to getting these.
I try to make each platform as flat as possible with a broad base even if it seems like I'm wasting too much time. This is more important on the later stages of Babel.
Watch what happens when you pull out or push a block out and what the consequences are. For example, when you pull out a block out from the end of a row, if the row above has an unsupported block that sticks out 1 block farther, that block always falls. That's why in the video I posted, I always try not to pull out a block on the end of a row if I can help it. Unless that will help me where it will fall.
Here is a page from the Catherine Wiki site with a lot of great advice on Babel:
http://catherinethegame.wikia.com/wiki/Babel_Tips
Even though it says elsewhere that the blocks are random, they aren't. There are only a finite number of combinations and there are only a relatively few different patterns that come up. You'll notice that the patterns are very similar from game to game. Not exactly the same, but similar.
I got this from the Catherine Wiki page posted below and above.
This page below also has some good info on Babel in general too including approximately how many steps for each babel level in both single and paired modes and a few videos on the single player:
http://catherinethegame.wikia.com/wiki/Babel
There are things to remember in paired mode. Both must survive and don't block your partners path. I know it seems obvious, but it's really easy to do.
Obelisk was the hardest 1 for me to do of the 4 levels of Babel. If you can do this level, the last level is easier IMO.
The key to this is patience and practice, if I can do it, so can you, good luck.

This achievement is unlocked through the Babel game-play mode, by completing the third stage: Obelisk. Babel's block placement is completely randomized, making strategies very difficult to create. Ice Blocks, Bomb Blocks, and Random Blocks become prevalent in these stages, with Mouth Blocks appearing at an alarming frequency as well. The tower occasionally is wide enough to fill most of the screen, but the Random Blocks limit the margin of error greatly. Skill and quick thinking will be necessary to reach 215 steps. This Babel stage can also be played in Pairs which should significantly make it easier for you. If playing in Pairs, 154 steps are needed to complete it. For an in-depth strategy of each Babel Stage click HERE.

Obelisk is the third-stage of the Babel mode. This mode and stage will become available after unlocking 5-Star Man. Babel mode is completely randomized, which means there is no absolute visual puzzle solution. This will require skill and having a firm grasp of all the block concepts that one has learned in Golden Playhouse.

Steps to complete:

  • Solo - 215
  • Pairs - 142

You must complete the level in Babel mode called Obelisk. The number of steps for one player is 240, for two players - 154.

When playing on two controllers, from the 130th level a very easy section begins, an almost perfect wall.
In terms of tactics, I will say the following: work with ice blocks carefully, but do not try to avoid them. Avoid breaking blocks: if there are two paths to choose from, one with breaking blocks and the other not, choose the second one, even if it seems more difficult. Exploding blocks are death, don't step on them, push them out if possible. Blocks with a question are also death in fact, I completed the tower only when I learned to ignore them (unless I found myself in a hopeless situation and had nothing to lose). Well, try to quickly disarm the “running” blocks by standing on them.
In terms of complexity, this stage seemed easier than Menhir - more platforms for 4-6 blocks, fewer breaking blocks. Completing all 128 levels of Rapunzel helped a lot, so I advise you to first complete this mini-game, and then storm Babel.
