How to unlock the The Golden Child achievement in Catherine - Definitive Guide

First things first, you have to keep your step count from reseting. Your score will drop to zero when it does, and you will even lose the coins you collected along the way. The gauge under your step count drains over time, and you need to reach a new hight to refill it. This means you have to keep climbing as fast as you can. Retrying from checkpoints will not carry over your step count, so you have to do the entire level in one run. If you don't do this, you won't get a high enough score for the gold prize.

This is easier explained than done. It will require memorization and repeated retries before you get everything perfect. This is very hard and time consuming. If you aren't prepared to spend a dozen (or more likely two dozen) frustrating hours on this, you aren't going to get this achievement. It's that simple. Know what you are getting into and prepare for it.

There are tons of Youtube videos available for puzzle solutions. There are no differences between 360 and PS3 levels so you don't need to worry about which version you watch. It's actually beneficial to watch different people go through levels that you are stuck on so that you can see a variety of ways to get past the puzzles and pick the solutions that work best for you.

Make sure you have filled the alcohol meter in the bar before each stage, as this makes your movements faster.

My best advice is to do these during the actual story, rather than replaying them from your cell phone in the bar. This way you can save your game between levels. This is useless for stages 1 and 8, but very important for the longer stages, like 7 and 9 which have lots of levels to them. Sooner or later you will need to go to work, or school, or sleep, or jail, or someone will just trip over a power cord. You don't want to lose 5 hours of hard work just because you couldn't save the game (and yes, I did spend over 5 hours just on stage 9). You'll never need to go back further than the last confessional, which is where you would have to restart with a retry anyway. Just don't save your game if you didn't get a gold for each level of the stage you're on.

I know this means you have a limited number of retries, but if you grab a pillow before using a retry you actually don't lose any retries. The pillow will be there again the next time, so you can keep going forever. If you can get two pillows before retrying, you will actually gain retries without even advancing past any levels. I had well over 40 retries by the time I got to the end of stage 9. And if you do run low on retries, just return to title and reload your save. I would recommend reloading your game as soon as you can consistently reach the first pillow on a level, that way you can avoid beating a stage with only a few retries left.

I never found a spot where getting the pillows was an impediment to completing a level on gold. They are often next to coins that you want to pick up anyway, or along a faster path if you use the right technique.

Thanks for this - I didn't think to try to do it during the game so I could save between stages, so I was spending hours going over stage nine, getting to 9-5 and just all but wishing I was in the nightmare myself - a preferable experience.

Thanks!

I can't give you a thumbs up, as I have the UK version, and it's down separately here. Sorry for that. But I give you a thumbs up in spirit :-)

Do you know if you need to get a gold prize on each individual climb? Or does only the total prize at the end of each night need to be gold?

Technically, you just need to get a gold at the end of the night, but in practice, that doesn't happen unless you get gold for every stage along the way. So, yes, you need to get gold for every individual climb.

Thanks for this one. I didn't realize that the pillows helped with the retries. I'm working on this now and now I'm going all the way through the level even if I have lost my step count so I can keep my retries up. Then I die at the end.
It's ridiculous that the game doesn't let you retry as often as you want.
I was going back to the title menu way too often cause I kept losing my step count.
I love this game, but this is pretty hard. Still it's really satisfying getting gold on these.
Thanks for this solution. +1 from me.

Are the levels randomly generated or the same? Also if you pause the game does the count meter still deplete?

Achievement "The Golden Child" - Earn Gold Prizes on all Hard difficulty stages

Guides and videos for all stages can be found on the Catherine Wiki:

http://catherinethegame.wikia.com/wiki/Walkthrough:Overview

Hard mode is quite frustrating: You have less time, NO UNDO, you don't get a bonus at the end of a stage. So basically you have to try for perfect runs and get most of the gold coins (you do not need all of them, most important is the combo bar).

My tip: Do the final stages first and work your way through the stages backwards. Then the worst is over first. Especially Level 9 ist VERY frustrating because of all the random things which can happen. Monster blocks moving in your way, bad luck with random blocks, bad luck with bossattacks, monsters in your way...

Even with the great videoguides you'll have a hard time. Good luck.

One note about the Golds: You need to score a total of points in each stage. Meaning - you can have silver in the first substages of a chapter - but if you reach the required total points in the final stage you will get gold nontheless. But yes - most important are perfect runs - and make sure to collect most of the gold coins. It is not required to get all of them.

Any notes on what the cutoff scores are? Thomas Mutton is a total asshole and I can't get all the coins on 9-5 all the time. Beat it once with 203K points (golded everything before it, but with maybe 2K or 3K points less than the maximum possible score due to missing a coin stack or two) and got silver. How much more do I need?

Just use the link above and choose the stage you are in. Note that you do not need Gold in 9-5 - it is enough to have Gold in the FINAL stage of a chapter.

And no - you do not need to collect all the coins - you may leave out several of them. However, you MUST NOT break the combo meter in each stage. That's where you get the most points.

One thing I'd like to note having just done it: 9-5 and 9-6 are easily the biggest bastards of them all. I spent two hours on each stage alone due to the minor randomness, and it would normally take me an hour at most to finish an entire stage otherwise. Following the guide linked in the solution wasn't enough; there were places at the end of 9-6 where I had to start checking other random Gold videos on Youtube. Outside of those two, great solution.

Somethings to mention...you have to Gold every substage to get the Gold for the overall. Getting 3 Golds and 1 Silver for a stage means you get a Silver for the overall trophy. I did one substage, 6-4 I think, where I had Golds for 6-1 to 6-3. Managed an step combo that was about 10 steps shy of a perfect and it gave me a Silver. This was after getting all the coins on that stage as well. That meant I got a Silver for that substage and a Silver overall. Perfect runs are pretty much required, which means no errors and no checkpoint usages.

Best advice? Do a run on Normal and finish the game. Have a Save before you start Day 9/Stage 9. Change your difficulty to Hard and run through the stages again from your cellphone. You have infinite lives. Downside is that once you start a Stage, you need to finish all the subsections before you can save. If you go to the Bar before completing a Stage, despite getting Golds for subsections, you will need to redo those subsections again.

This achievement is only available while playing Golden Playhouse mode on Hard difficulty. It will unlock if you obtain all 9 Gold Prizes on all of the 9 Nightmare stages. In order to get a gold prize for a stage you must get the gold trophy for every floor of that Stage. This is the hardest achievement in the game(outside of Babel) because the puzzles now give you:

  • Less Time
  • Different Block layout than before
  • You'll need to use more advanced techniques a lot earlier compared? to Normal difficulty.
  • Bonus Point has no multiplier, meaning you need to work fast and get all Enigma coins to keep your Gold Rank Score constant until you beat the whole stage.

To help prepare yourself, save this achievement for last to get yourself some experience with the game. To get a gold prize you pretty much have to:

  • Never lose your Step Chain(Multiplier)
  • Collect all Enigma Coins
  • Never use checkpoints, start from beginning to finish

Be sure to study each puzzle closely and find the quickest way to the top, you'll need wits and quick thinking for this. Remember, these puzzles can be memorized unlike the Babel Stages, they're always the same layout. Boss and Stage dynamics will be the most difficult aspect of obtaining gold prizes for each stage. Once you feel that you have the skills and techniques to complete all 9 Stages on Hard start a New Game on Hard or load up a save from Golden Playhouse and replay the Stages from your cell phone under AWARDS. Just be sure to switch difficulty to Hard from the pause menu before attempting if you haven't already. Be forewarned, Hard difficulty can get extremely frustrating, especially the later spheres of Stage 9 which are absurdly hard!

Here are some additional tips:

  • You can finish every stage via replay(from your cell phone) and get the achievement, but only while at the Stray Sheep. I strongly suggest you do stage 1 and 2 this way because can get drunk at the bar for faster speed.
  • Each level has a low margin of error and I believe each level has a maximum score.
  • The buffer between Silver and Gold Prize is very low. Something like 7,000 or so points. Failing to keep a combo in the middle could easily result in getting 20,000+ less points.
  • I only suggest playing Stage 9 via Golden Playhouse. When you play via Golden Playhouse you have limited retries but you can save. Saving will be more helpful since silver can be corrected but retries might make it extremely hard. You can always lower the difficulty to rack up saves via Golden Playhouse though.

You can also follow the video guide located HERE by trying to replicate the Hard Stage runs. Good Luck!

This is one of more difficult trophies in the game because it requires Gold Prizes on all 9 Golden Playhouse stages in Hard difficulty. There are several differences to getting Gold Prizes in Hard versus Normal difficulty. There is no rewind with , and the Nightmare Stages are bigger in-scale and vary from Normal. It is also relevant to note blocks fall faster in this difficulty.

There is also no bonus modifiers for safety bonus either, so you’ll have to ensure you always get all the enigma coin to keep your chain going. Learn each stage, and study the patterns and utilize all the skills and techniques you have learned previously as they will be put to the test here. Since Golden Playhouse are always canned stage puzzles, one can use visual video walkthrough assistance to help one progress through the most optimal paths in each stage to achieve Golden Prizes. Refer to each Stage Related Trophy for these walkthroughs on the Hard difficulty level.

If you started on a difficulty side from Hard, you do not have to start a new playthrough to complete the Golden Playhouse on Hard. Simply use your menu and change the difficulty setting to Hard. After that, you can use your cell phone and under the AWARDS menu, then highlight "Stage Select" to replay all the levels on Hard.

After you have earned a Golden Prize in all nine stages on Hard difficulty, this trophy will unlock.
