This is cumulative across all games. You must play on a timed mode to accumulate score - Free mode does not earn you points. If you abandon a level or restart, the score you've racked up so far will be lost.
Tips to get a large score per game: play 9 minute mode on Brazil (level 1). Every time you achieve 100% coverage, you get a bonus starting at 25,000 increasing to 50,000, 75,000, 100,000 etc for each successive 100%. No tricks or secrets - essentially, you just need to keep playing to eventually get this achievement.
You can check on your progress towards this achievement by completing a level and looking at the 'total overall score', displayed at the bottom of the end of level summary. The achievement will unlock on this screen when 50,000,000 is reached.

Having a huge combo helps a lot. When I went for the 25x achievement I actually hit 35x by the end with very low (< 50%) coverage and still got 5 million points.
Also, the 100% achievement is really hard, so if you plan on working on it you'll get this in due time anyway.

A cumulative achievement, once you've gained 50 million points throughout the course of playing the game this will unlock. You can check how many points you've scored so far when you finish a level.
