To open the first gate, you need to get the key from the safe in the house upstairs.
Light the candles using your brothers lighter then spin the dial of the safe counterclockwise to 45 to unlock it.

Story-related; Continue forward from the start and enter the building at the top of the hill. Climb up the ladder, then return outside to grab a lighter from your brother. Light the candles upstairs and open the safe here by turning the dial to the right to 45 (unlocking The Safe (100G)). Grab the key from the safe, head back outside and follow the dirt path to the right through the first gate.
