How to unlock the 1001 Nights achievement in Cities: Skylines - Definitive Guide

After reading many positive reviews on Steam and being a fan of the SimCity series, I decided to give Cities: Skylines a try on the Xbox One; however, I didn't have much time for gaming after buying the game. I skimmed through the achievement list and found this achievement. Seeing as it is possible to 'afk' this achievement, I decided to go for this achievement first. I was lucky enough to actually be present and see when the achievement popped. Because I didn't do anything else in the game before or while going for this achievement, I am able to share the exact amount of time it will take to pop this achievement as well as provide a basic guide including some hopefully valuable tips for anyone who wants to go for this achievement.

This achievement is very time consuming. If you are planning to actually play the game and unlock the rest of the achievements, you should leave this for last. (Don't do what I did.) You will probably put several hundred hours into this game by the time you unlock the rest of the achievements.

This achievement is for experiencing 1001 nights in the game. This should not be confused with the in-game date at the bottom left of the HUD. A night is experienced when the screen darkens. According to my final figures, on triple speed, a day/night cycle takes a little over 9 MINUTES. In comparison, on regular speed, it would take almost 30 minutes.

The fastest way to unlock this achievement is to start a new map. You can select any map. Do not build anything on the map. This will prevent you from possibly going bankrupt and allows for less processing to occur which slows down time. Speed up time to 3x. On the Xbox One, you change the speed that time passes by clicking on the left thumbstick. You can check what speed you are currently at by looking at the bottom left of the screen. This area also shows the date you are currently at which is a good way to keep track of how close you are to unlocking this achievement. Make sure the day/night cycle is on in the options menu.

Here are the accurate stats:
To experience 1001 nights in Cities: Skylines at 3X speed on a blank map, it will take:
6d 8h 50m of in-game playtime, that's
approx. 153 hours (152h 50m)
111156 Total Days Passed (in-game)
2324 Year Unlocked (starting year was 2018, I believe)

To get a more general picture of what this entails, I was leaving on my Xbox One for at least 12 hours a day. For several days, I left it on for almost 24 hours. Doing this it took approximately 2 full weeks to unlock, possibly a bit more.

Also, while going for this achievement by using this method one other achievement should unlock:
Cities: SkylinesSafe CityThe Safe City achievement in Cities: Skylines worth 29 pointsKeep the crime rate under 10% for 4 years straight

As far as I am aware of, this is the only way to unlock this achievement. If anyone unlocked this achievement in less time than this, it's either because they found some kind of glitch or they cheated. Like I mentioned earlier, from the first few minutes I put the game on, I was grinding this on 3X speed, and I literally saw the achievement pop, so my statistics are very accurate.

----------------------------[edit]
Just to clarify, this is a cumulative achievement. Nights experienced on multiple maps/saves count. That's why earlier in the solution I mention to leave this achievement for last if you intend on completing the game. Thanks to KingyOwl and Henri Stadzisz for confirming this.
----------------------------[edit]

I followed your guide on a blank map and the achievement unlocked for me at an earlier in game year than yours, so I can confirm that progress from other saves of existing cities counts and that the 1001 nights don't have to be from one save.

The start date on any map is the current date on your console, which, if you are online, corresponds to the actual date. Therefore, while time is constant, end-dates are relative.

The bigger your population the slower the time goes, on a new map a day (the blue bar at the bottom not the day/night cycle) takes around 5 seconds on full speed and the whole cycle around 9 mins. On a larger city the blue bar takes around 11 seconds and 14 mins for the whole cycle. Best to start this achievement on a blank map. I have been leaving mine running over night and seem to be getting there quite quickly.

Does deactivating day/night reset the time counter to 0? I'm on almost 400 hours gameplay through different cities and i just deactivated for short period of times.

By ItaloMJ91 on 04 Dec 2019 06:01
No, I don't think that should affect it. Remember the 150 hours played was on 3x speed on a blank map. On normal speed it would take around 450 hours (on a blank map). It may also take a bit longer if the game has to process your city.

Thank you so much for the maths. I spent almost 150 hrs playing this and had day/night cycle turned off. Typical that I didn't check my chvs list first. Still, I know I've had a good 10 or 20 hours day/night. So my new map shouldn't take as long as the year 2324. I've got about 150 in-game years to go :D

Finally unlocked this one on an empty city set to full speed. I know I was approaching the end of the 2200s, probably close to 2300 when I got this as I had a few other saves where I'd been using this. Plugged in a controller and just let it run. Thanks for the tips!

what a trashy achievement. Unlocked at 2210 (but I already had playthrough with other map).

Really, the easiest is just start lower all settings to low, start a new a map, do not touch ANYTHING (no road nothing), alt+tab the game and wait.... It feels like you mining bitcoin in the background

I've played 3 real time days of this game so far, but I turned off Night cycle just to help see better.

I don't believe there is really a set answer for how long it would take with a city. It really depends on how much processing has to be done by the game - the more processing, the longer it will take. So even if I had tested that, your results could end up being different than what I would have gotten. This game allows multiple saves, so my advice would be to start a blank map on a separate save from your main city and grind this out on that; it should take substantially less time. You've already put a lot of time into the game so it should pop at a much earlier year in the blank map than I have in the guide.

Is my game broken or what? Started a brand new save, let it run to 2331 and there's still no unlock. Mind you that I also already have 2 previous saves that have both lasted around 100 years and that the day/night cycle have never been turned off nor have I ever gotten bankrupt.

Edit. After having reviewed every single save game I found a save that seems to have become corrupted somehow (my city became renamed into 99999999 or something similar like that). I suspect that the save messed the counter and I had to make the hard decision to fully reset my game (thus my multiple cities that I had dedicated so much time on was gone forever). Started from scratch and got the achievement in the end.

I trust that you say this is a cumulative achievement and I'm working on my third 30+ hour city to find out.

It definitely works over multiple cities. I finally got it in my newest city in the year 2264.

I will add that this works better on the Series X than on the Xbox One, as the Series doesn't seem to have the same slowdown when your city starts to grow. Days appear to pass just as quickly in a city of 200,000 as they do with 10, which was definitely not the case before.

This solution will save 145 hours in real time to get this achievement. With this solution, this achievement can be done in as little as 5 1/2 hours.

Small edit, solution still works as of 6/20. I personally tested on a dummy tag. However the time to unlock is incorrect now because of game updates to the menus and the time it takes to load a save, the new time to unlock is 9-10 hours.

1st start a new map and pick Lagoon Shore (this can be done on any map/save you have I just found this map easiest to see the moon and tell the time).

2nd run the game time to nighttime point the camera at the lagoon and watch for the moon
once you see the moon pause the game clock.

3rd set your tv brightness low so the moon is easy to see against the dusk fog (not too low) it makes the next step easier.

4th two things you need are an index finger or an X1 game case put ether one against your tv above the dusk fog horizon (where the red and blue sky meet) and run the game time until the moon touches the top of your finger or case. (this is roughly 04:00 game time the night count "counts" +1 at 05:00 game time).
EDIT
The screenshot below is how the moon should look in step 4.
External image

5th SAVE AT THIS POINT pick any save slot I used the top one.

6th once you have the map saved go 3x clock speed turn the camera 180° to look at the sun once it has fully risen over the horizon you added +1 to you night count. Simply reload your save you made and repeat until you get the achievement!

EDIT 2
To clear up some confusion I'm going to add some extra pics below. I took these pics from the PC version with the scene explorer open to show the raw time data for night count, current hour, sunrise/set time and day/night length.

This what 0400 looks like, one hour before a night gets counted.

Does a night also count between all city‘s lights turning on at dusk and all lights turning off at dawn? Takes approximately two to three minutes time. Thanks for your answer.
Also, at least at my current playthrough, there are two chirper messages between your appointed day times. Can it be that those are exactly one hour apart?

@Epsilon Theta, of course it's turned on, otherwise I wouldn't ask.
I've played this out yesterday a little bit with a small city that earns a lot of money over time so I wouldn't go bankrupt.
Saved exactly at that date when the moon set over the horizon like in the screenshot depicted and turned the camera by 180 degrees so see the sun rise.
I have orientated my camera so I could see my city and the lights going out one after the other so that the sun rises to a certain point. This was when I reloaded my savegame.

My question was how high the sun must be in order to count for one in-game hour so I could reload my savegame. In the solution, it's only stated like "until the sun has completely risen over the horizon". A screenshot would have been useful for that as well.
Hope it's clearer now.

I'm in game for over 320 hours now, always using day and night cycle, and I've spent appr. 1.5 hrs yesterday to try this method. Seems like I'm still very far away from 1.001 nights, but just wanted to make sure that this time was not in vain.
Thanks.

I believe you are on the right track.

Not sure the city lights coincide with the night/day triggers that are also used for the achievement. Imho, I wouldn't risk it. Then again, I haven't really experimented with it to see where the sun/moon were when the lighting changed.

I did this for about 50 nights and simply waited till the disc of the sun had risen completely above the horizon. But to be fair, I got my achievement when waiting for the random DLC disaster achievement. If you plan to do the DLC, I wouldn't waste any effort on trying to get this "manually".

@Trucase & Epsilon You're doing it right if sun light shines on your city. Technically 0500 ingame is just a bit more then half the sun rising of the horizon so having it fully rise is an ok precaution to take. A full reload cycle can be as quick as 20sec if set up just right. I'll add more pics to clear up confusion.

I can confirm that this works on PC. After finishing with the other achievements on my main city, I started a blank map and used this method. I saved with the moon at ~04:30 and then proceeded to let the sun rise fully over the horizon, then reloaded and repeated.

After doing this for several hundred cycles, I was unsure if PC tracked this achievement the same way as Xbox, so out of frustration and boredom, I let it idle over the past 2 days. Came back this morning to the achievement unlocking, and I’ve only logged 73 hrs total playtime, so this method definitely works!

This achievement was patched with the recent update. It would appear that you need 1001 VISUAL day/night cycles, not simply the in-game day timer rolling over to the next day. There is a new time speed up feature, and it appears to also speed up the visual day/night cycle. Use it to your advantage. You're still looking at 150+ hours of gameplay to reach this at 3x speed.

The visual day and night cycle does also go quicker if you use the new patched speed up feature. If you let it run normally it takes about 30 minutes and if you go up 3x it takes obviously about 10 minutes. Theoretically we're talking then about 167 hours of letting it run idle on 3x speed.

By MAJORPOOPY on 10 Jun 2017 00:02
I believe so, yes.

Triple Speed was added in the latest patch, but it was mentioned that this would slow down if the game has to do multiple calculations at the same time. When you have a large city it needs to simulate traffic, citizens, industrial development etc. which all eats away from resources that could be spend speeding up time.

Also, with a blank city your budget never goes down, so if you leave it idle you won't go bankrupt.

I did a test last night on a fresh map with triple speed.

A full day-night cycle took 113 in-game days, or 9 minutes 35 seconds in real-time.

113113 days from your start date: A game starting in June 2017 would reach 1001 cycles by February 2327

1001 day/night cycles in real time: 159 hours, 52 minutes (rounded up to 160 hours) / 6 days, 16 hours.

Note, if you play the game at Triple Speed on an already populated map the day/night cycle will be slower due to the extra calculations the game engine needs to make simultaneously. I tested on a 100,000 population city and the cycle was 20 minutes long.

Thanks I'm on year 2290 but have over 150k population so it takes almost an hour for a year to pass now and I had the night option turned off until the update was released so I'm on the fence if I should just start a new city and let it run 6 days or wait it out. I've been running the game about 22 hrs a day so hopefully soon I'll get it lol

Just wait till your first night falls then go to options and set the day/night cycle off. It will be day then. So basically you skipped the night and saved yourself some minutes. But I'm not sure if it will count forwards to this achievement cause im not sure if it goes about experience the full night or just a moment of the night.

As an addendum to the other guides.

Currently at the moment of writing, this can be achieved on the Windows 10 version that is now in the PC Pass. The game is actually "Play Anywhere" and yet it requires a double purchase! The PC Pass of course eliminates the need to buy it again, however this doesn't count for the DLC's.

For this achievement however I just loaded a blank map and just keep it running on the background. It won't even pause when watching a different screen. It doesn't even slow down my PC! I recommend having it auto-save.

EDIT: I got my achievement on the year 2182. So it's cumulative across all maps

I have not played this game on PS4 but I did just unlock this today on Xbox 1 with this solution. This solution may not work on PS4 but I'm posting it anyway in case it does work.

This solution will save 145 hours in real time to get this. With this solution, this trophy can be done in as little as 5 1/2 hours.

4th two things you need are an index finger or a game case put ether one against your tv above the dusk fog horizon (where the red and blue sky meet) and run the game time until the moon touches the top of your finger or case. (this is roughly 04:00 game time the night count "counts" +1 at 05:00 game time).

5th SAVE AT THIS POINT pick any save slot I used the top one.

6th once you have the map saved go 3x clock speed turn the camera 180° to look at the sun once it has fully risen over the horizon you added +1 to you night count. Simply reload your save you made and repeat until you get the trophy!

Can be boosted quickly with a couple of mods.

Go to the Steam workshop, and subscribe to these two mods.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=15675...
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=81469...

"Achieve it" allows you to unlock achievements with mods enabled, and "Time Warp" will let you speed up the day/night cycle by x128.

Once installed, go to the options page in the main menu, and make sure that both mods are enabled.

Start a new, blank city. When Time Warp is enabled, there will be a clock icon added in the bottom left corner, next to the globe and progress buttons. Open the clock menu, and set the day cycle speed to x128. Then set the game speed to x3.

Each day cycle should now only take a few seconds.

This took me 302 years and 1 month of in game time to achieve across two different cities. One which had a population of around 200,000 and one with a population of around 20,000. I did not notice any difference in the time it took for a day/night cycle to run in either city.

UPDATE: I have now unlocked this trophy in the year 2285. Combining the number of years saved with my only other city which was at 2049.

(2049-2017) + (2285-2017) = 32 + 268 = Roughly 300 years total in-game must pass to unlock this trophy.

*Edit* Trophy popped at 304 years & 4 months in game time.

Currently at 301 years and 10 months on PS4, not using the save / reload method, just playing through... hope it unlocks soon. Got all the other trophies within 60ish in game years , but this one is tedious...

I've been grinding this trophy for a week now having been on a BLANK CITY at 3x speed and currently on the year 2265, still not been awarded this trophy yet.

Based on the calculations I was finding.

1 Day/Night cycle in my city has been taking just over 9 minutes each time, in this period there was approximately 3 and a half months passing with each cycle too.

Solely from this i estimated 3.5 (months per cycle) * 1001 = 3503.5 months total.
3503.5 / 12 = 291.958 years which rounded up is 292 years to complete this trophy

9 minutes / 60 minutes to express a cycle in terms of hours = 0.15 hours
0.15 hours * 1001 cycles = 150.15 HOURS

Starting from the year 2017 on 3x speed on a brand new map for the first time this trophy should unlock around 2309 (Probably add a few more years to this to account for rounding errors)

I have heard confirmation this trophy stacks with multiple cities so it does not have to be done in a single save file.

Currently, as of writing this, i expect to unlock this trophy tomorrow as i have already put roughly 140ish hours towards this. If not then I'm not sure when this should unlock.
