How to unlock the Coaching Hero achievement in Clicker Heroes - Definitive Guide
Upgrades are special skills or abilities that can be purchased for each individual hero once they pass certain level upgrade thresholds. In general, upgrades are available at levels 10, 25, 50, 75, and 100. At that point, you will have to pay additional gold to unlock the ability and have it count to your achievement. The type of upgrade (special ability, DPS multiplier, etc.) does not matter, just that it is purchased.
As you purchase upgrades, you will progress through the following in-game achievements, symbolized by a Heart located at the very bottom of the achievement list:
* Considerate (Purchase 25 upgrades)
* Generous (Purchase 50 upgrades)
The achievement will unlock once Generous is unlocked.
Tracking of progress in-game can be done two ways:
1) Selecting Generous (it'll show progress as # of upgrades and % to completion)
2) Going to the in-game stats page, which has an "Upgrades Purchased" counter (eleventh one down)
It is probably best to earn this one naturally, by progressing, leveling up your heroes, and buying the upgrades when you can afford them. Xbox achievement tracking does not update during the game, which makes it extremely likely that unlock requirements are tied to the in-game achievements being unlocked. As such, uninstalling and reinstalling will not allow you to quickly earn this. At this time, ascensions do not reset progress towards this achievement, but as there are around 90+ skills to purchase prior to upgrading "ASCENSION", you should be able to earn this achievement beforehand.

So, by the time I had Amenhotep at 150, ready to unlock ASCENSION, I got the achievement for 100 skills unlocked. This included 5 skills for heroes after Amenhotep, and all skills prior to him. So, it's very unlikely you will miss this achievement prior to ascending.
That said, I took notes on my current in-game achievement progress and stats, to see which reset and which did not. Magnanimous is 200 skills purchased. I had 100, so it was at 50%. After ascending, I went and earned enough to buy the first skill for Cid. The info for Magnanimous then updated to 101 (50.5%). So if, in the odd case you did not earn 50 during a run-through of an ascension, it is cumulative.
Findings are as follows:
Progress Reset:
* Hoarding (Gold on hand)
* Hero Levels (Farmer Boy achievement - must be done before ascending)
Stayed After Ascension:
* Highest DPS
* Highest Clicks in a single second
* # of Ascensions (+1, wouldn't make sense to reset)
* Total Boss kills
* # of clicks (Clicker Hero achievement does keep!)
* Total amount of gold earned
* Total monster kills
* Hero Upgrades purchased (It does carry over!)
* Total Chests broken open (Goldfinger achievement)
Unknown/Assumed:
* Total relics (Assumed carried over, as it states so in the help text and experience with web-based version)

As an additional note, I unlocked it this morning after earning about 12 million gold from offline time while around Area 41, parlayed it into more upgrades, and got a bit further for more gold. I got about as far as the Ice Apprentice with two upgrades (lvl 25), three or four with the few heroes before her, and maxed out on the rest.
