How to unlock the Faster than Electricity achievement in Close to the Sun - Definitive Guide

There seems to be a terrible lack of information about this game on the internet, and therefore a lack of info on the achievements. This achievement, as the description states, requires you to beat the game in under 3 hours. Seems like a decently straightforward task ,and not too complicated, as my two attempts were done in just over an hour and a half. However, there are two hidden requirements that aren't stated. These are:

-You cannot die at all, as a death voids the clock. If you die, you have to start the whole game over, as the game will save the death right as you die, and you can't chapter select for this achievement. So, the obvious route would be to do this achievement and the one for not dying at the same time.
-You CAN NOT pause the game at all. I found this one out the hard way. There's a few long cutscenes in this game, so you can plan bathroom breaks, etc. around these.

I used this guide for all the codes and when the chases take place:

https://www.playstationtrophies.org/forum/close-to-the-sun/3...

I would highly recommend a separate playthrough for the collectibles/miscellaneous achievements, and to get a feel for the layout of the levels. If you have an issue with my guide, comment how I can improve it, all constructive criticism welcome.

Unlocked this doing a full collectable run, dying multiple times, and going back to main menu once. I also paused the game many times.

They may have patched this game since I wrote this guide, as I completed it in November of 2019.

Unlocked this achievement today, even though I died 5 times and paused 9 times

Just unlocked this while following the speed run video from "Flawless Survivor" - https://youtu.be/Fkpple697Is. I paused MANY MANY times to watch the vid and see the next path forward, and it still unlocked... I did not die, and both achievements unlocked just prior to credits. Follow the video, and it should be easy - took me about 2 hours.

This guide is COMPLETELY WRONG. You can die and you can pause

Great guide man. The hardest part for me which I continued to die in was the Flowers of Persephone second generator switch. Felt like every time I got down the stairs to hit the switch I would die and it would be a wasted hour and a half of my time. Finally got it though today. Ready to delete this game forever. What a frustrating pair of achievements.

The worst thing being, there was like zero information on this game anywhere. You'd never know that pausing the game voids the achievement until you mess it up yourself, or someone tells you.

Zombizero, you can't unfortunately. The game saves a death flag as soon as the death animation starts.

So this has been an extremely annoying achievement and sorry in advance for the long post coming.

I saw this solution prior to doing it myself so I could see what I was getting into. There is certainly some stressful parts of this game (mainly chapters 7 & 8) so ensuring no deaths plus no pausing was going to tricky. I kept dying at stupid parts so every time I did I had to restart and try again.

On my first “successful” run, I finished the game only to have ‘flawless survivor’ achievement unlock but not this one. I was pretty angry to say the least and couldn’t figure out why this didn’t pop as I clearly had no deaths (because I got FS) and I am 100% sure I didn’t hit pause and that I finished well under 3hrs. This lead me to conclude that either of the following can affect the achieving:

- that playing multiple new games consecutively doesn’t actually restart the timer and that you need to quit to dashboard, quit the game completely, reopen and hit new game every time you want to try this.

OR

- I did towards the end click the Xbox home button to quickly see something but this does not pause the game (it continues in the background and without the pause menu). It’s possible this counts as a pause. It’s advisable to maybe just not press it in case.

OR

- both FTE and FS can’t be gotten at once. As the solution implies you can, I assume this isn’t the case unless it’s been patched.

Anyway, after not getting FTE even after doing all requirements I couldn’t figure out where I went wrong. I attempted to give it another go.

I got all the way to end of Chapter 10 (Tesla’s apartment) and stupidly died in the electricity room just before the end. Instead of restarting again, I decided “what the hell I’ll finish the game anyway I’m so close” and this achievement popped (despite me dying a minute before finishing)

So in the end it seems like you can die and still get it. However, it’s probably a lucky glitch so maybe the no deaths apply? Maybe they don’t. Who knows.

Anyway. Hopefully the above will help someone get this pesky achievement.

Some help on the no deaths part that I found useful was: it seems that you must run certain ways during the chase sections otherwise you automatically get killed. The two specific areas I found this to be the case were:

- chapter 6 (Ludwig). In the second part of the chase, it’s important you turn left AFTER the fork when you can vault over a bench. If you decide to run ahead through the mannequins, when you get to the bit where you fall through the burning floorboards, Ludwig will get you just before the event occurs. I did this run multiple times and died each time I didn’t go through the left hand corridor and vault over the bench.

- chapter 8 (FOP monster): this is the part where you turn the electricity on and need to run down the stairs and hit a switch and go through a door while a monster chases you. You need to be extremely fast and accurate. You need to turn LEFT at the bottom of the stairs and run to the button to get through before the monster gets you. Turning right at the bottom of the stairs gives the monster too much time to catch up.

Again, hope this helps someone on this tiresome game. Overall I thought this game was a good attempt at something that if it had a bit more work/gameplay could have been something extremely special.

My first attempt was perfect except for the notorious chapter 8 generator chase, where I died once... I definitely want to emphasise that you must stand as far away as possible from the switch that initiates the chase to have maximum time. Its insanely tight and so late in the run... an absolute run killer

I have all achievements now. Final update:

For this achievement (beat game in under 3 hours) I died several times (in 3 different chapters!), and still got the achievement. I never paused and beat it in one sitting. Death bug fixed?? I think it must be fixed.

For the no deaths achievement, I paused once and still unlocked it (not sure if pause bug affected this achievement anyway). Again it was all in one sitting.

It is possible that the no deaths achievement could be gained by exploiting cloud saves if you die, but I didn't try it. It wasn't too bad after a couple of attempts and the game goes by quickly. Hopefully this helps someone, sorry for spamming comments lol

Hey guys, this is the only achievement I need for this game now.
I made an attempt when going for Flawless Survivor but didn’t end up getting it (probably paused the game) so just looking for clarification before making another attempt.

In a nutshell: Finish the game in less than 3 hours - Deaths are okay but you cannot pause the game. Is that right?

Thanks to anyone that can provide full confirmation.

Can confirm dying does not void the speed run achievement. Died 4 times and still got it

I had a hard crash at the start of chapter 10 which must have voided this achievement. Completed in 1:45 and no pop. Just a heads up

Run through the game in under three hours. Dying doesn't affect this at all. I've been told that you shouldn't hit pause, and do it all in one run. That's what I did.

There's an 82 minute speed run, so this is definitely possible. Do your first play to get all of your collectibles and learn the way through the game. But don't worry about the clock. As long as you keep moving forward, 3 hours is really cake.

And I died twice through my run. Still popped. If you die, just keep moving.

Three hours is plenty of time as it only takes two hours, give or take, for a speed run. While it is probably possible to get all the collectibles using a guide and this trophy at the same time, I recommend doing it on a dedicated play through.

The guide over at TrueAchievements claims that dying or bringing up the pause menu invalidates the Xbox achievement. Because of this, I did not bring up the pause menu at any point to validate if that is indeed the case for the trophy but I did die twice; once on Chapter 4 and another on Chapter 6. Dying did not invalidate the trophy; it popped after escaping in the pod at the end.

This trophy could be combined with the trophy for passing without dying, and with platinum in theory and getting it in just three hours, but there is one thing: in addition to the collective trophies, which can be calculated from the video and picked up along the way, a trophy for passing without deaths can ruin all your plans. One mistake that will lead to your death is equal to rolling back to the last save file. And then the timer goes off.
Checked personally.
So you have to choose: either a speedrun, or a passage without dying.
As for me, it’s easier to run through the game again, since it’s very short.
